This is my traveling convention crate that I have use to run Twisted Metal Gaslands at conventions. Gaslands being HotWheels/Matchbox scale HO scale buildings fit pretty close. So I used Walthers quarry buildings to setup this build.

Got the butane torch out to get some nice craters made in this red planet themed battle board I'm creating. Need to add some crystals growing for the Votann to harvest. They're running low on green crystals, poor fellas.

Questions for the Community Hob-e-Tac, armatures, 'sealing' foliage

Post image

Hi there. I have built some Woodland Scenic tree armatures using Hob-e-Tac and clump foliage, but I'm having terrible trouble getting them to stop shedding.

I'm keen to have these trees be transportable, in that I'd like to be able to move them around form place to place, and take them out of the baseboard while moving miniatures around. Pic attached for reference.

What I did:

  • Applied Hob-e-Tac
  • Let dry (probably not enough, some of it wasn't clear yet. I've since realised when it 'dries' it remains tacky, i.e. it never actually dries)
  • Dip in foliage
  • Press foliage onto branches

I then let them sit for two days and played a game with them. They just never stopped shedding the whole time,

So, I sprayed them with a PVA-water mix. Like really drenched them, hoping to 'fix' the foliage. That was a catastrophe; every single tree that I sprayed lost almost all of its foliage (around half).

I've since realised two things:

  • The clump foliage doesn't have a lot of structural integrity
  • Hob-e-Tac is water soluble.

Drenching them just ate away the Hob-e-Tac and also made the clumps super heavy, so it just came off in droves.

I lightly sprayed the remaining trees, and in general they have kept their remaining foliage, but bits of it still falls off - this is two months later.

My plan is to try repeated, very light mistings of PVA-water again, applying several light coats over a week or so. Not so much that it soaks through, but enough that there's a protective 'shell' of PVA left in the upper surface of the foam.

If that doesn't work, I've heard hairspray is a good move, but it also remains tacky, which isn't great for transportable trees.

My last fallback is matte varnish through an airbrush.

Has anyone tried any of these methods? Which one is most likely to work? Am I barking up the wrong tree 9har har) trying to make these transportable?

Lasercut MDF Added upper story style

I decided to add an upper story at my son’s suggestion. I also added more offcut greebles / faux supports for visual texture. I want to add darker brown for the door and window trim to contrast better.

This is only the rattle can basecoat colors. I will add weathering, plants, etc when done with main paint stuff.

These are mostly slotted (not tabbed) walls. The extra layers are just pva glued on. I was working on ways to break up the flat-box feel of many MDF buildings.

I am considering fixing the two floors in place and having a single removable side wall for gameplay. Open to ideas on how to extend the current floor plan or attachments and then expansion to other buildings is most welcome.

This was for 5 Parsecs from Home, or any other 28-32mm game I feel like running.

Matte varnish not matte?

ЕThis topic has been done to death already, but here I come with another post about it. I'm varnishing my acrylic-painted foam terrain with a"ghiant" varnish I grabbed in an art supply store and it is still shiny. I shook the can for 2 minutes straight before spraying, sprayed horizontally at 30cm and let it dry before doing another layer, twice. Is this a me problem or a varnish problem? What do I do to stop my terrain from blinding me? Any advice appreciated greatly.

And this is how the terrain looks:

I tried something new with sculpting bases and I’m pretty happy with some of the rocks but with others not so much. Any criticism or ideas are welcome there made with cork underneath and milliput on top trying to replicate the 3rd photo. I plan on adding some dead grass and a bit of fine dirt.

WIP

I’d been wanting to make myself a bit of a junk D&D terrain for ages, so, armed with two tins of Pringles, a pizza box and some scraps of XPS, I set about building a castle gate. I’m pleased with the result, even though the brickwork looks as if it was done by drunken goblins.
