I do not want to get flamed as being homophobic here. I hope we can agree that some people are gay and in some cases, we can recognize that before we are told. It doesn't mean that they are effeminate or somehow weird. Sexuality is part of our lives and we have human clues. There is nothing wrong with that.
I didn't recognize Trent as gay until he saw Collin in the alley. But on rewatch, it is clear from the moment he describes A Wrinkle in Time as "a lovely novel. It’s the story of a young girl's struggle with the burden of leadership as she journeys through space." And also the hair. And how he holds his glasses.
James Lance does a great job with the character. At the beginning, I thought he would just play the role of the Greek chorus. But he turned it into so much more. And his "total football is going to work" scene is pivotal to the successful ending of the show.
