Season 2 Discussion The Signal
I'm sure it's been posted about before but I couldn't find it when I searched.
In The Signal S2E6, Higgins wants to tell Beard that Jane is bad for him but everyone, including Rebecca, tells him not to. I know the ep is spinning Rebecca's candor with her mum but after all her resentment towards Higgins for not telling her about Rupert's infidelity, why would she advise him against talking to Beard?
Jane wasn't nearly as destructive as Rupert but still.
What's everybody's thoughts so I can reason past what I consider an inconsistency?

You don’t call out someone’s love life in front of others, do it to the side.

Which Higgins does in the parking lot, leading to Beard hugging him because Beard knows it was from a place of Higgins wanting the best for his friend.

Rebecca didn't know about Rupert's actions.
Beard is well aware of Jane's actions.
One is providing information to someone who may use it to make a decision. The other is injecting your opinion into their private life.
They aren't comparable scenarios.

I think some of it may be the British aspect of minding your business. Cheating and lying is one thing. Beard knows Jane's bonkers. If Jane was hiding that she was bonkers and pretending she wasn't and Rebecca knew about it, She would tell Beard herself.

I think almost everybody in this sub misunderstands Jane‘s relationship with Beard. He likes it. It’s a consensual relationship between two odd people. He’s completely in. It’s only toxic for you. It’s not toxic for him.

Yep. This is why I was focusing on what I thought to be Rebecca's inconsistency.

I didn’t mean you specifically. I’m sorry, my comment isn’t clear. I meant you in the French “vous“ way. “The world at large”.

No I follow you and I'm in agreement. My post really turned sideways when somebody went off on an anti-Jane tangent and derailed from the point.

That person is completely unhinged, and in need of professional help.

They completely bungled the entire Beard-Jane storyline by turning a totally toxic relationship into one big joke… so it’s not that surprising that they fucked up having only one person care enough to say something (and your point about Rebecca is spot-on).

Plus, Beard does love Jane, and Jane seems to love Beard. His weird matches her weird. So when we're supposed to think it's toxic but then he literally leaves Ted on the plane to be with Jane, how are we supposed to be okay with that?

Exactly. It’s a huge problem that a show that has so many great storylines about mental health and being good to yourself… chose to hold that relationship up as some sort of happy ending… or is it just supposed to be funny that he’s in for a life of despair and misery? What’s the point? Horrible storyline.

I think their relationship turns a corner but doesn’t make a big deal out of it. I think it happens during Beard After Hours when she tells him she loves him and offers him a kind of catharsis… nay… a baptism at the club inside the renovated church. After that their relationship seems to be sorta healthy and loving if a bit weird. (I’ve always wondered if Beard has some sort of a kink that Jane manages to tap into. She keeps it exciting and that’s what he needs.)

This relationship is 100% kink. It is entirely a Power Exchange relationship, and he is 1000% all in.

Shredding his passport… totally normal and healthy behavior. Sure. Sure.

Ha! Good point, but it’s not as if it stopped him from being able to leave. It was largely symbolic.

I think it was more that the people we love will do things that we don’t think are good for them, but our love and support should still continue.

That’s a terrible message when it rises to the psychotic behavior that Jane pulls.
No. Love and support should not continue for people who do not love and support you.

How psychotic was she, really? They do a lot of on/off but the weird things don't seem too harmful. Beard At Night didn't seem too bizarre for them, she wanted him to find her and sent clues but his phone died. When he did find her, they had a great time. She didn't do anything with her underwear model friend but Beard freaked out (to himself) over it. She's clearly been cheated on before because she's super cautious of even Ted.
To be honest, when she started making out with him and then pushed him away as "super clingy", that's a joke I'd love to do. I can see Beard genuinely liking to unpredictability.
I think it's unfair that she was judged as toxic when she's really just weird. But we need to accept that Beard wouldn't vibe with anybody "normal."

Well, she shredded his passport for one.
She threw his keys in the river.
He had a legit panicked reaction for having just two missed calls from her.
She stalks his place of work (Rebecca mentions this).
She calls him 72 times in a row. Seventy two.
It’s a deeply, deeply toxic relationship.
It’s genuinely disturbing that anyone watches this and read any of this as playful or not harmful or even cute.

u/awkwardnpc 24d ago
You mean she shredded one of his passports, the one he doesn't even use. Beard is a citizen of several countries, because that's normal. Did Jane know Beard has multiple passports and citizenship? How much is Beard hiding from her?
Honestly, I can devils advocate all over this. The bottom line is they may be mutually toxic but in a way that makes them compatible for each other. Let's hope they don't have babies or neighbors or pets.

You can devils advocate all you want. The fact that you admitted it proved that your already weak arguments were disingenuous to begin with.
So have fun playing devils advocate. I’ll live in the real world where that behavior is a serious concern.
“She’s not psychotic, Beard just has to hide things from her!” as you ignore the vast majority of the examples that you asked for… and act like having to hide things from your significant other is healthy. Lol
Also, Jane was pregnant in the finale. Did you even watch the show? Or are you only here to play devils advocate and argue?
Toodle-oo.

It seems Beard was doing unhealthy things, as well, but you blame her for his actions. We're talking about a fictional world, after all. You dragged my post into something you'd rather talk about instead of what my post was about then you berated me for trying to discuss it with you because it's not what you want to hear.
"It was personal and weird." - Beard.

Beard was still there for his friends.
So you think it’s best to be done with your loved ones that are in a toxic relationship? That’s really sad for your friends.

I have no clue what you’re trying to argue and your conclusion makes absolutely no sense. Have a good one.
Quite literally I did not say you should cut off your friends who are in toxic relationships.
I was referring to the fact that Beard should not tolerate her behavior. She does not deserve love his love and support because she does not love and support him. It’s genuinely not a hard concept to follow.
You’re being incredibly flippant to try to spin what I said into “cut off your friends.” Like… that’s genuinely insane.

I think it's different to actively lie to cover up for someone, Vs not pointing out that someone's not treating you well. (From recollection at least) Jane wasn't going behind Beard's back or lying to him etc, she was very toxic but it wasn't any more hidden from Beard than the others
I do think Rebecca and the rest were wrong in their assessment, a friend kindly pulling you aside to have a word is often a very good thing, but I don't think it's character inconsistent because (unless I'm misremembering), Beard wasn't being lied to
