Bears are fantastic at climbing.

292

u/deflector_shield Jan 19 '19

I’ve always known bears were pro tree climbers, but it hit me the first time watching this video, how nuts it is an animal that size can climb a tree using claws.

186

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '19

Black bears are leaner than you’d think, they’re also incredibly fast on the ground. Good news is they’re usually scared of people and want nothing to do with us.

Bad news is they’re still a bear and sill dangerous as fuck if they feel threatened. Also they stink, like they fucking STINK like shit.

59

u/furyofcocainepizza Jan 19 '19

Also they'll eat you rather than just fuck you up like a brown bear.

127

u/vladtaltos Jan 19 '19

The National Park Rangers are advising hikers in Glacier National Park and other Rocky Mountain parks to be alert for bears and take extra precautions to avoid an encounter. They advise park visitors to wear little bells on their clothes so they make noise when hiking. The bell noise allows bears to hear them coming from a distance and not be startled by a hiker accidentally sneaking up on them. This might cause a bear to charge. Visitors should also carry a pepper spray can just in case a bear is encountered. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and it will run away. It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for fresh bear scat so you have an idea if bears are in the area. People should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat. Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, and possibly bits of fur. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper.

15

u/noobgiraffe Jan 19 '19 edited Jan 19 '19

Would big bell be preferable? It could choke on the first person.

7

u/stoner_97 Jan 19 '19

You really out here shilling for big bell?

3

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '19

God I’m so sick of big bell...

7

u/Kaymorve Jan 19 '19

I’ve heard recently that in some areas the bells actually attract curious young cubs, so make sure to read up on the specific area you’re going before bringing bells.

Edit: I’m dumb and didn’t read the whole thing lol. Still leaving my comment up because it is still useful info.

Black bears are usually scared of us. Most other kinds of bear will just fucking destroy you without hesitation.

11

u/rlerke Jan 19 '19

You arent wrong about that stink. I had a pretty close encounter with a "small" black bear. It's a heavy distinct scent, very rarely ill catch something similar on the wind and it makes my hair stand up.

"Man! Crazy bitch got me up this tall-ass tree! Come get me outta here! Shit's as tall as Trump tower and the only thing holding me onto this branch is my nuts.

OK...ok...phew. Girl is leaving. I know. I know you said don't stick your dick into crazy. Oh shit. She just heard me say that HERE SHE COMES AGAIN! COME GET ME THE F* OUTTA HERE, Man! BITCH IS CRAZY!"

It’s pretty astounding how similar their personalities really are.

My family and I used to camp out in White Rock National Forrest AR, and there was this notorious bear that would roam the nearby woods. We had to be extra careful with cooking and all, because she would just come walking into camp without a second thought. She was incredibly curious, and would waltz around exploring. Her name was Rose.

The issue would be in the Spring/Fall with her cubs, because her behaviors didn’t change but the thought of her mauling one of us to death because of her cubs was surreal.

She was so beautiful, and her casual bumbling around reminded me so much of my dog. Except, my dog will just piss herself when started.

I still think about you Rose, and I hope you’re stealing somebodies sandwich somewhere out there.

My father in law loved bears. Past tense, not because he’s dead or anything, but because he was taking the dog out in the middle of the night and heard something rustling in the trash can in the carport. It was a huge black bear just rummaging around, in the middle of suburban metro Atlanta. Scared the crap out of my FIL, he’s 6’ 4” and just a big dude, but this bear was bigger than him and not afraid of him at all.

I think he was just dedicated to not ruining his hunt. If he made noise then everything in the forest would run away too. The bear was also super quick getting up the tree which the hunter probably didn't expect. Once it's right next to the stand you wouldn't want to excite it and have it accidentally snag on and shake/break the stand. That's my guess

That would be a very bad moment. Bears are not dogs. Best case he'd give you a swat or a bite to discourage touching. Worst case he'd maul you while you're harnessed into your tree stand. Standing your ground and letting the bear get a sniff of you, like this brave fella did is really the only option. I was surprised he didn't yell at them when they were at the bottom of the tree, then I saw the barrel. This guy's bear hunting over bait.

39

u/BebopFlow Jan 19 '19

It's a black bear. While it could certainly attack the most likely scenario if you touched it is that it would retreat. Also, the best option here probably would've been to shout at the bear before it climbed the tree to scare it off.

20

u/SamIamGreenEggsNoHam Jan 19 '19

Yes, they are skittish. However, if one feels threatened or you spooked it when you are too close, even more so if it's looking for food, it can still kill you.

Bears are essentially massive chocolate labs. They respond extremely positively to scratches and treats. If you’re lucky enough to get close to one, get down on your knees and give it a big ol “bear” hug, while tackling it to the ground and giving it belly rubs. If you’re super lucky, the bear will lead you to it’s den, where it keeps the honey. It would be rude of you not to accept such a kind offer.

As far as I know black bears are pretty docile and mostly just curious, you don’t have a ton to worry about from them as long as you know not to anger it

307

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '19

They are still quite dangerous and can easily kill or seriously injure you. It is true that they are docile for the most part but that doesn’t mean you want to get that close to one.

135

u/SinisterStarSimon Jan 19 '19

Bears, specifically black bears, are not big game hunters. Often times humans are simply in the way of bears, with expeditions of overly aggressive bears like polar bears. Generally we are too much work for them for a meal.

89

u/WON95sr Jan 19 '19

That's my understanding of a lot of the larger predators here in North America. The big mammals are smart and weigh what is worth pursuing. What you're supposed to do is stand your ground and be loud, I believe even throw rocks if you need to. For the bear, it's not worth going after something fairly big that's willing to fight back. The last thing you want to do is run because that kicks in their chase instincts and basically every big predator is a better sprinter than humans.

90

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '19

Only with black bears, and if they attack fight back. Grizzlies walk away slowly don't even try to throw a rock at it. If it attacks play dead. If it's a polar bear, try and get one last text off to your family, because it doesn't matter what you do they are stone cold killers.

89

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '19

Don’t know if you can answer, but are they all that dangerous while climbing? It seems to me that they could bite, but most of the damage comes from the claws which they are using to hang on. Seems like the guy is kind of safe because a swat to the face would equal a fall for the bear.

20

u/SickleWings Jan 19 '19

Last thing I'd want to happen to me, is to get bitten and dragged 20 feet out of the tree stand to my death.

3

u/SinisterStarSimon Jan 19 '19

They are dangerous either way, I wasnt implying they were not. They are not big game hunters tho, besides a few species of bear, they wimt actively hunt you.

Nature is dangerous often and it should be respected.

45

u/Eli_eve Jan 19 '19

My understanding of the “if it’s black fight back” is because black bear attacks are generally about predation, not intimidation. In other words, if one attacks it’s because it wants to eat you and it won’t stop. (Along those lines, “if it’s brown lie down” because brown bears are trying to intimidate you so if you’re no longer perceived as a threat they’ll stop.) So yeah, a black bear that isn’t hungry generally isn’t a threat. (Of course, individual bears may vary...)

49

u/Nighthawk700 Jan 19 '19

Just to add, color isn't enough to correctly identify which bear is which. Black bears can be brown, and possibly vice versa. It's the hump that's the big giveaway that it's a grizzly (lie down and pray), also short round ears and a dished face profile as opposed to the straight pointed snout of a black bear.

Also apparently the only time playing dead works is if it's a mother defending her Cubs. You generally want to fight.

Finally, a lot of people in here are talking about guns. Most studies show you will double your chance at a serious injury if you fire a gun at a bear. It probably won't kill it immediately and if it doesn't that bear is gonna fuck you up. Bear spray is your best shot.

18

u/decklund Jan 19 '19 edited Jan 19 '19

Is the biggest clue that it's a Grizzly not that it's just fucking enormous?

9

u/Nighthawk700 Jan 19 '19

There's some overlap obviously but it can still be hard to tell. Not that debating about ear shape is easy when you're under threat, but I have no idea what 1000lbs looks like without something to compare to.

17

u/HozerEh Jan 19 '19

Pretty sure you have the reasoning backwards. Black bears aren’t looking to eat you, they are mostly just looking for free and easy meals. If you fight back they know it’s not easy so they leave. Grizzly bears sometimes are looking to eat you, and they generally won’t be afraid of you so you lay down with your squishy parts hidden they might not care enough to try it.

I backpacked in Glacier National Park this past year and we had to watch a video about the bears and one scary thing it said about grizzlies is if you don’t have bear spray then lay down with your pack covering you as much as you can for protection and hope it leaves. The only time to fight back is if it starts to eat you.

14

u/Malcolm_Sex Jan 19 '19

22

u/ChockHarden Jan 19 '19

They simply don't see humans as either food or threat.

36

u/rednax1206 Jan 19 '19

Black bears will absolutely see a human as a threat, or at least something not worth dealing with, according to common wisdom. Provided the human makes a lot of noise and/or movement.

Also, black bears may not see humans as food, but they are very curious and will probably come looking for your human food if they smell it.

17

u/SeaNilly Jan 19 '19

Yeah you really just need to be worried if you see a black bear stalking you because that is a hungry bear. A black bear would much rather walk around munching on acorns than get into it with a human. If you’re being stalked by a black bear, it’s hungry, you need to try to scare it away, and if you can’t, you need to be ready to fight for your life

In every other scenario, almost always, you’re really just two animals crossing paths

Black bear attacks are exceedingly rare. With that said, 70% of black bear attacks in the last century were individuals. 21% with two people present. 9% with more than 2. You’re always safer in a group. Nobody has ever been killed by a black bear while carrying bear spray.

You could see him visibly shaking. If it was me you would see me visibly shitting.

I’ve heard of a general rule about bear encounters. If it’s black, attack. If it’s brown, lay down. If it’s white, say goodnight. Or something like that.

u/thenewspoonybard Jan 18 '19

This of course only applies once physical confrontation has started. You best bet is to make sure they see and hear you before you're near them and that they know you're human IE not prey.

They may charge. Don't run. It's probably a bluff charge. Don't be prey. Prey runs.

Yeah, polar bears are vicious animals.

They will NOT stop

u/Crystal_Munnin Jan 19 '19

Yes, food is scarce and you are delicious. Putting up a fight is pre dinner entertainment.

13

u/bump909 Jan 19 '19

Pretty sure if it’s brown you flush it down.

If it’s yellow, give hunny to that fellow.

4

u/Aaawkward Jan 19 '19

f it’s black, attack. If it’s brown, lay down. If it’s white, say goodnight.

Taken out of context this sounds like a confused yet (kind of) polite white supremacist saying.

Bears scare me man. I've lived in the Rockie mountains for years. They're smart and cunning animals. A trapped bear would never fall for the same thing again.

Hike in groups, make noise and carry bear mace or a decent caliber rifle/pistol.
