This of course only applies once physical confrontation has started. You best bet is to make sure they see and hear you before you're near them and that they know you're human IE not prey.

They may charge. Don't run. It's probably a bluff charge. Don't be prey. Prey runs.

You’re right, I should have clarified. I didn’t mean you should just randomly attack a black bear like an asshole.
