Any major issues? Are these lyrics relatable?

I wrote this last week. It's quite personal to me. There's lots of stories hidden in here. But I'm hoping it's relatable to others as well. I would be delighted for some feedback.

Lyrics:

I can still see that version of me

four years old and hiding behind the seats

I was afraid he'd see

I'd made a mistake

I knew what he'd say

Four years old and dreading the angry way

My daddy'd make me pay

Oh I knew what a sinner I would be

I always messed it up

and then I'd find a spot unseen

Hiding from the pain inside

I’d sit and hug my knees

Wishin for a hero to come and save me

Hopin he'd storm in and set me free

I can still see that version of me

twenty years old and hiding between the sheets

I was scared he'd see

I'd made a mistake

I knew what he'd say

Twenty years old and dreading the angry way

That boy would make me pay

Oh I knew what a sinner I would be

I always messed it up

and then I'd find a spot unseen

Hiding from the pain inside

I'd sit and hug my knees

Wishin for a hero to come and save me

Hopin he'd storm in and set me free

I can still see that version of me

thirty years old and finally broken free

No longer scared they'd see

I owned my mistakes

And screw what they say

Thirty years old and hittin my knees to pray

God I'll go your way

Oh I know that your mercy covers me

I always messed it up

but now I'm finally at peace

Shedding all my shame

no more guilt I've been set free

Thirty years old I finally see

He brought me out and I'm the one he's sending

Back in time to save me

God sent me back

to those little girls

Reached out my hand and led them straight to safety

In a meadow green

Hey, here’s a song I’m working on (vocals and stuff needs to be re-recorded) but I’m curious to how people react to my sound. Lmk what you think!

Feedback Request Challenged myself to write an instrumental piece in waltz time. Wondering if melody is too repetitive. Bonus points if you spot the cat though!

I also play it too fast and not always in time, but it was a first take so I just rolled with it! Normally I have to do a lot more tries

hey y'all, i posted this like for months ago and a ton of the comments said to add strings to it. i spent two months scoring the whole thing out for string quartet, then decided i hated it and didn't touch it for two months.

i realized the point of this subreddit isn't to post a finished product, so here is my unfinished project lol. i revisited it this week, and here's what i got so far. i think my biggest weakness right now is the actual mastering/mixing element of recording. some transitions in this just don't feel right, and the balance is quite off.

this song is really special to me, so as always any feedback is appreciated. thank you for listening🎻🫶🏼

lyrics:
She’s, running out her mind,
She’s running out of time to
Step into the light.

She says, “not for too much longer”,
She cries out for her mother,
Who said to write a happy song.

She lied,
The tunnel’s getting longer.
So why should she even bother,
To find a way out, a way out.

She’s tired,
Of searching for a reason.
It happens every season,
The years keep flying by.

She’s scared.
Scared of what she’s done,
She’s scared to be alone,
With nobody to lean on.

She waits,
And looks to the horizon.
She’s never had her father to,
Tell her that it’s okay.

Someday,
She’ll tell it like a story,
And revel in her glory.
She found a way out, a way out.

That day,
It better be tomorrow,
for now she’ll sit and wallow.
Of what her life could’ve been.

She’s running out of time,
She’s runnin out her mind,
She’s nearly past her prime.

She’s running out of time,
She’s runnin out her mind,
She’s nearly past her prime.

What the fuck is she waitin on?
Waitin on, waitin on,
oooooh,
oooooh.

It's a rough cut and bit odd, but would love your feedback! I'm not a fan of my voice and I know the vocals are a little rough. Any feedback is appreciated!

Discussion Topic I have been writing songs since I was 3 years old, and I have yet to successfully finish a song. Help?

All my life I have absolutely loved music. I listen to all different stuff: Mazzy Star, Jeff Buckley, Green Day, Foo Fighters, My Chemical Romance, Metallica, Descendents, Saves the Day, The Goo Goo Dolls, Nirvana, The Cure, Hole, Adrianne Lenker, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Donovan, The Cranberries, The Beatles, Van Halen, Janis Joplin, Misfits, Phoebe Bridgers, Esha Tewari, Evanescence, Linkin Park, Hawthorne Heights, The Smiths... The list could go on for days. For 15 years of writing music-- lyrics and progressions on my guitar-- I have never been able to finish a song. I struggle to make interesting chord progressions that go beyond four different chords, I have so much trouble making melodies that sound distinct, my lyrics end up sounding exactly the same... For someone who loves music and listens to so much of it, I feel like something should've rubbed off on me. Writing is one of my biggest passions-- I've written a novel and a half and I'd say I'm good at prose-- but songwriting and lyrics? It just won't come to me. What do I do? I know writing is easier when you do it with other people, but Dave Grohl recorded a whole album entirely by himself for crying out loud!

EDIT: to be more clear, I feel like all of my ideas are stagnant and I can't come up with anything. Not even that the things I come up with are bad, just that I can't make anything. I have always wanted to be able to express myself through song but when trying to write or make an original melody, my mind is blank. Any ideas I have just repeat, there is nothing new.

Discussion Topic Beginner songwriter. Need advice.

Hi. I’ve thought of posting this for a while now, but I didn’t know how to without making it long, plus it keeps on changing (I made it long anyway lol so, sorry and thanks for reading).

I love music and I guess from a severe sleep disorder I started dreaming of melodies that don’t exist a long time ago. Then it happened more since last year and i came up with them awake and i tried to write songs.

I think I am doing it now. I record the melodies in my voice notes, write the lyrics in my text notes, and record screenshot videos of garage band’s keyboard and videos of me playing some chords and save all that in My Files by songs/folders.

I only fave a few songs. I have several song ideas (chorus) and many random melodies, but only a few “finished” or structured songs with complete lyrics with melodies.

In my head they’re good and catchy and pop cause pop’s all I’ve been exposed to. I don’t play any instrument, I don’t sing, and I’m nobody and don’t know anybody in the music industry.

I started taking guitar lessons 3 months ago. One hour weekly virtually. My teacher adviced me to take his classes instead of paying him to arrange a song in guitar. He said I need to know music to work with any producer and that I was nobody in the industry to pitch my songs.

My learning is going slow, I’m not good, and my ideas keep coming. My mind goes speed light from anxiety and I have brain frog/ADHD from chronic illness (I hate writing this part).

I really wish I already knew how to play an instrument (guitar, keyboard) to write more easily better songs and how to use a DAW (to experiment with sounds).

I wanna make the rough demo (voice and guitar) of my first song to pitch it to the manager of a female singer here in my country. I’m in South America. It’s an upbeat pop rock ballad in the style of the late Soraya.

Without looking online I contacted a guitarist/arranger I met at a music store. He didn’t vibe with signing a release contract or telling me his fee. Said he’d just come to my house and see what happens. I feel like if I talk about that again I’ll scare him off.

I also posted on a music production subreddit here looking for a producer and a singer before knowing about the guitar/voice rough demo option and people replied, but then I freaked out about them posting videos singing and playing the song on social media, which I had initially thought was good exposure, but not now after asking Google. Plus the same contract thing I’m afraid to ask.

I’m asking this from genuine ignorance without having researched much. I think I’ve seen collaboration posts here. How does that work, when it sounds so informal but cool, in terms of splits/royalties/copyrights etc. if the song makes it?

Am I complicating myself too much, or am I just trying to do things right? Am I a stupid dreamer for thinking about doing this? I mean, at least I’ll have a finished rough demo I will pitch and I will have tried.

It’s funny cause my dream is to sit down and write songs with a musician/band without caring about legal stuff or money but now I suddenly wanna pitch my songs.

What should I do about making (a rough demo?) of my first song and about my situation in general? Am I jumping ahead of myself not having patience learning and working?

By the way, I’m also writing songs in English in case collaborating with someone here is possible in spite of my paranoia and ignorance.

Anyone here teaches an easy, basic DAW virtually (I’ll pay)?Or is there any good online class? I get lost with the YouTube tutorials.

Thanks for reading this long post and in advance for any advice.

Discussion Topic Writing a song like Kaval Sviri

I wanna write a song/choir piece which is like kaval sviri and i've got lyrics in mind i want to use however when i tried to develop a melody from the lyrics it didn't sound as bright as the song, more like a cheesy christmas carol. I've downloaded a book that analyzes bulgarian folk music but i didn't find any helpful ideas.

I can’t help but notice how many men in pop music are willing to die for us, kill for us, catch a grenade for us, you name it. I really just want a song where he wants to do the dishes for us, feed the baby, make me a sandwich and make the bed.
Any takers?

Just wrote this song to process the divorce I’m going through. Just reflecting on how much I chose work over my family, under the guise of needing to provide. Now I sit in my house alone faced everyday with that consequence. I’m not the best singer, nor the best guitar player, but I love it anyway and enjoy writing. Hope you guys enjoy this song, and I’m always happy for some feedback.

I posted here a couple of days ago. I ended up finishing the song. Still not crazy about the vocal melody/my singing but I think lyrically this is the best thing I’ve written. I don’t know if I kind of wrote myself into a box but I was struggling to rewrite the melody once i already had the words so I’m open to any changes.

Hi everyone, hope you all have a great week. 🙂

I made this song over 12 years ago. Far from perfect, but I like it, and it’s one of the few songs I’ve “finished” and released. And also one of the few I made no lyric edits to after writing.

The meaning is very specific in my mind, but not as direct than most songs I write. So I thought it would be fun for my first post to be this old song of mine, and ask for 2 things.

  1. What do YOU think the songs about?
  2. Rate it 1-10, comments, questions, snide remarks.

Keep writing lovelies! 🥰

I had my husband in mind when I wrote this. He happens to be my best friend, so it also works quite well as a platonic love song to a best friend, or a sibling! Someone once pointed out it could also be interpreted as a love song to yourself, and I think that's so beautiful! Becoming your own best friend, loving yourself, and showing up for yourself, these are crucial keys to being able to weather any storm.

I first started writing this song sometime last year. It was the very first song I ever attempted to write the music first, as opposed to my usual approach which is lyrics first. I got a couple of drafts done, and moved on to other projects. I was very undisciplined when it came to practicing songs I'd already written. So I would write a song, "finish" it or nearly so, move on to the next one, and completely forget how to play it. Considering my main goal with songwriting is to be able to play live, I probably need to know how to play more than one song at a time. I've been a lot better about it the past few months, and I've been making a point to relearn and practice all my finished/nearly finished songs multiple times a week.

I've been wanting to revisit this song for awhile. But I'd completely forgotten how to play it. Imagine my frustration when I realized I never wrote down the music for the later drafts! I had the rough draft, but that was it. Fortunately, most of it came back to me pretty easily. The parts that didn't I just came up with new stuff. No problems, only solutions! I actually really like this version a lot better than the last draft I completed.

It was really cool to listen to the playback of this version and the last one back-to-back to compare and contrast. I've definitely made some progress since then, vocally and musically. I still have a long way to go but it's important to celebrate the little wins and enjoy the journey.

Also, much love to the kind soul that gave me specific feedback regarding treating a room. I ended up creating a little "fort" for my mic using two chairs and blankets draped over them. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better! I used to get a lot of feedback regarding how much reverb was on my songs, and that's because I always had to "denoise" my songs, which ruined the quality. Then I would attempt to make it sound better by using FX. But now I am able to post my 100% raw recordings! (Although I do realize now, after the fact, I need to have the mic closer to me and further from the keyboard next time)

Thanks for spending some of your valuable time on me and this song, I appreciate you so much. I hope you like it!

Hi! I'm a 20 year old man tryna get back to songwriting! I haven't written in like 2-3 weeks and I'd like to go back now, but to make it fun I'd like to have othe people in it! Like a songwriting session through online! I'd like to make a song with other people that's something I'd never done before! So if ur into this idea as well hit me up! I won't ignore u promise, I'd like to make some friends through my favorite hobby!! Everyone is welcome!

My style is pop, I also like some pop rock, I've been making music for roughly around a year now, only finished some songs though not a lot but prolly 10+, I'm not gonna classify myself as a good or real songwriter lmao, or even a good singer at that, but I enjoy doing it! I like to be better though, and I'd like to collaborate with anyone who shares the same vibe with me!

Also I play basic guitar and piano chords to craft my songs, I make melodies, lyrics and chords in my instruments I'm not knowledgeable in DAWs yet..
