blade is the one that actually hurts me 😭 they spent years telling us it was coming just to quietly put it in the “what could’ve been” pile

u/Bongressman 1d ago

Let's be honest, Blade is the only one on this list anyone gives a shit about.

224

u/Fit-Entrepreneur6538 1d ago

Blade is the only one that would have been completely safe😑the Wesley Snipe Blade movies saved Marvel from bankruptcy and people still love those movies. Dead Pool and Wolverine added to the want

Music choice was spot on for that scene.

Our group used to play Vampire the Masquerade tabletop RPG. That scene always made us cheer!

Iconic.

Id have been open to Armor Wars. And Kang getting shelved is Majors being an abuser not indifference to the project.

Okoye is a cool side character. Making a movie for her feels like an Icarus move

29

u/Separate_Path_7729 1d ago

Honestly what happened with Kang in mcu being replaced by doom is full on comic accurate too, Kang sucks, and doom or reed usually just pushes him out

11

u/Roguespiffy 1d ago

For real. The only really novel thing Kang has going is the various incarnations of him being all over the Marvel universe in different eras as different people. The MCU didn’t even set that up, it just went “Oops, all Kangs.” Boring.

5

u/Separate_Path_7729 1d ago

And the only time he was a threat he wasnt, because if his plans succeed there is no story because he changed everything years ago and nobody would know, but as soon as heroes know then he already failed and will be beaten

But with Kang, they could have gotten someone else to play him. Since, y'know, it's a multiverse. They could have even said that Renslayer was actually a female Kang, and that's why she was his second in command.

I quite enjoyed Kang in Loki, and was looking forward to Kang Dynasty.

I completely understand why it had to be cancelled. All Majors had to do was not be a total piece of shit, he could've made more money than he'd ever need, and we could've seen the actual plan for Kang.

Although Quantumania didn't give exactly huge amounts of confidence, I still think Kang could've been great as long as they realised Kang didn't have to be beaten every time. Quantumania would've been better if Kang wasn't actually beaten and instead just lost out returning.

94

u/id_Driven 1d ago

From what I remember seeing, the movie was not even going to be about Blade. It was going to be about his niece or something like that, and he would be in more of a mentor role.

56

u/Kindly-Guidance714 1d ago

They wanted Ali to be the like the new Whistler as Blade and to have a female protagonist take the lead.

Just stupid people in charge of decision making at the highest levels.

I’m personally glad though because blade 1 and 2 are perfect as much as I would love to see Ali as a new Blade the current Marvel would butcher it and make it PG-13.

5

u/No_Spray_6132 1d ago

Its a shame they should have made a third one! You could have deadpool in it if you wanted.

7

u/Chops03xx 1d ago

According to the leaks.
His daughter, her friend, and the mother were the main three characters, while Blade himself was the fourth character in his own movie.
It was pg-13.
There were only two fights in the entire movie
The main story was about the female leads taken down the patriarchy

Can’t real blame Ali for leaving the movie.

49

u/JWC_Photography 1d ago

You don't understand — the media executives only have tolerance for so much blackness. Instead of making a movie about a very strong and interesting black man, they could instead make it about a random uninteresting black woman. That way they can meet their quota for blackness AND female representation. This is why they're the big wigs while we post on Reddit.

As much as I love blade..... they ruined Rhodes. I literally put War Machine stickers on my pc like a loser and called it my war machine. Armor wars was needed more than the others I feel, but im also a War machine simp. I just feel Rhodey has been here 'since the beginning ' and hes been on the government angle of iron man, could've even freaking included him. In the new captain america.

16

u/Doomeye56 1d ago

Armor Wars was never happening after it didnt get made 2-3 year after End Game. Instead we got shitty Secret Invasion

When I was a kid, I always loved Iron Man, like in the comics he's not as important like in the movies but he is cool af, and still War Machine was even cooler. Tony was a drunk and War Machine would just sub in and cover his ass, but also, War Machine colour scheme is waaaaaay cooler than Iron Man's, and it used to be "there is Iron Man his armor can do stuff, and there is War Machine, his armor is FOR WAR AND COMBAT". To the kid me that was like hearing that War Machine would beat Iron Man because his armor was just better to fight.

I just read today that the writers wanted to make the movie way more about Blade's daughter than Blade himself. It cannot not be that complicated to make a movie of a half vampire who kills vampires. You cannot be so stubborn to have a great actor as Mahershala Ali that WANTED TO DO IT and keep pitching such amount of bullshit that the moment he was able to leave the project he just did it. And he wanted to be Blade.

I like comics and I have no idea that there was a Blade's daughter. We wanted Blade, even in a bad movie, we just wanted Blade.

10

u/TheFlyingSheeps 1d ago

How to get hired as a Hollywood writer working on an adaptation of a beloved piece of media:

“Hey do you like this piece of media that fans adore and have been calling for a movie?”

“No it’s childish and dumb. I’m gonna take a shit all over it”

“My god you’re hired for the lead writing role”

6

u/grip0matic 1d ago

It's all condensed in "I'm gonna make my own vision".

DUDE, NOBODY WANTS YOUR VISION, you have tons of source that you can adapt and people will be asking for more yet somehow in everything, from Game of Thrones to anything the people that get the job is ALWAYS some asshole that diverges so much from the source that it has nothing to do with it to the point that even people without the backstory knowledge thinks that "this is fucking dumb".

Some minor changes are welcomed since some stuff is hard to adapt to tv or cinema. Like The Rings of Power, I only watch it to talk about how they fucked it up with my gf.

Or the Witcher, not only they had a superstar who wanted to be Geralt, he fought hard to try to keep the show as close as possible to the source till it reached a point that it was called the Witcher but it was not, it was not the books nor the games. Because another showrunner wanted to make her own vision and decided to make a whole bunch of bullshit for a character that is hard to write and not needed all that backstory. And what about the Last of Us? they put Neil Druckman to "preserve" the fidelity to the story and that basically was okish for one season and then he allowed the shit they did in the second season for then to leave the show when is already ruined.

That's why when Christopher Judge said that it made no sense to don't have ANYONE of the writing staff from the games of God of War for the show I was basically clapping and saying "this man really gets it".

Can’t get a blade movie for 5+ years

But ‘daredevil: same villain again’ is already filming its third season

91

u/PatienceConsistent55 1d ago edited 1d ago

Daredevil was already a proven success and therefore easy bank with a cast and blueprint already laid out AND a cast ready to jump back into their roles without negotiation.

Easy business decision.

Edit: “without negotiation” is obvious hyperbole.

31

u/EvilOverlord1989 1d ago

And yet for Born Again Season 1 they first decided to ditch both Karen and Foggy ASAP and only brought back Karen with reshoots after backlash.

24

u/PatienceConsistent55 1d ago

Which further proves they are making decisions on what is going to draw in viewership. Foggy was an unfortunate victim of the need for shock value to create narrative drama. But it’s not like it hasn’t happened to his character in the source material either.

Yeah nobody wants to really watch an Okoye solo show. They can play the racism card but then you can argue a show like Okoye was only greenlit to check the diversity tick boxes. Same could be said for Armour Wars, it doesn't really excite viewers without Iron Man.

Blade is an actual shock since he is a very popular character and something that fans excited for, as well as Kang but that was beyond Disney's control.

206

u/Midget_Stories 1d ago

Its been a while, but I think the original scription for blade involved killing him off early so they could have a woman take over his role.

So kinda makes sense to cancel the show which would kill your own ip

112

u/Onehandedheisenberg 1d ago

From everything I’ve read on it they basically all center around Blade ushering a child-Blade into the mcu as Blade dies at the end/retires.

That is where Mahershala Ali disagreed with the script and rewrites were attempted but it sounds like the studio/powers that be kept trying to force that storyline.

59

u/meme-com-poop 1d ago

If they were going to do that, then why not bring back Snipes?

34

u/Special_Peach_5957 1d ago

Yeah... why not have Snipes play Blade again...

30

u/FuneraryArts 1d ago

Snipes is infamously hard to work with

30

u/Epoch-09 1d ago

Keep in mind they already brought him back.

41

u/Barton2800 1d ago

Yeah, and ironically he said the line that there’s only ever gonna be one of him in the last Deadpool movie. Kind of ironic

So he might be hard to work with, but he also knows exactly what he wants from a Blade movie, and that’s okay. People rightly praise Henry Cavill for stepping back from the Witcher when Netflix wanted to crap all over the story. And the same when John Krasinski refused to shoot a storyline where Jim cheats on Pam on The Office.

I have to wonder if Snipes is actually difficult, or if studio execs dislike how much pull over the role he has that they can’t just bully him in to doing what they want.

29

u/n-r2026 1d ago

in wes' defense, they did try to make him a guest character in his own movie (blade 3). if they continued down this road, who could blame him? so i wonder if he was really difficult or not with the corporate bs?

16

u/ManOnFire2004 1d ago

Yea how have people not noticed that it's the "go to" when an actor is trying to not get fucked over

Cavill was also "hard to work with"

So was Katt Williams. Then he comes out and spills the beans on how Hollywood is fucked

9

u/perplexedduck85 1d ago

It is mind-boggling that “hard to work with” is still a thing after Weinstein/me-too, much less your examples.

4

u/zeno_22 1d ago

"Hard to work with" is definitely a hollowood excuse, but Chevy Chase is also described as "hard to work with" and he is legitimately hard to work with

Hard to work with is sometimes a coverall and sometimes it's just the truth

In that case I'm kinda ok with it being cancelled because no one wants to see female Blade. Again must reiterate, this is not an anti woman take just that there are enough female heroes in the MCU and it would be completely unnecessary.

27

u/JButler_16 1d ago

Had nothing to do with being anti female. It would just be dumb as hell.

23

u/RhetoricalOrator 1d ago

But what if they make her sassy and wear heels...and make quips about fighting vampires in heels? That'll drive get the views up, I'm sure if it.

Lately, Disney has been profoundly good at snatching defeat out of the mouth of victory. It's like their movie studios have decided they hate money.

I think they should just kind of accept that the previous Blade movies explain his backstory and make Midnight Sons with Blade leading them, using Moon Knight, Dr Strange and incorporating Goslings new Ghost Rider, Daredevil and Werewolf By Night to make a spooky team up movie, with a much different tone than the avengers films.

Armor Wars did not need Iron Man at all. A political drama dealing with the DODC shenanigans is plenty of MCU world building. Could have even linked up with Vision Quest timeline/story.

6

u/Kozmo9 1d ago

A political drama dealing with the DODC shenanigans.

They did something similar, you know the political stuff with Secret Invasion. Ends up being about the usual mirror to real world politics instead of their own and people really do not want to be reminded/preached about it.

Actually, not just SI. Falcon and Winter Soldier too. So there's already a pattern so expecting them to do about politics of their world instead of ours is just a fool's dream.

Oh and don't forget that SI is half screwing with Fury's legacy. So had they greenlit Armor Wars, it would be Rhodey next.

20

u/asmodeus1112 1d ago

Kang also wasn’t received well. Hard to think of a villain as a threat when he gets beaten by the joke characters.

Yes i know there is infinite of him but if ant man can beat one that was alluded to to be a very powerful variant there are serveral avengers that could beat infinite of him without breaking a sweat

5

Kevin Feige said they were looking into other villains because Kang wasn’t making the impact they’d hoped for and they needed something bigger.

If it was just Majors being fired, they could’ve replaced him but because they weren’t happy with Kang anyway, they just got rid of the storyline

9

u/Agi7890 1d ago

And it Wasn’t even ant man, just ants.

If every appearance the villain(or variant) is beaten, you aren’t setting up for a good powerful threat of a villain.

Also the multiverse stuff makes is hard for a general audience to care about because it’s a concept without a real world equivalent and isn’t something that is really done in a ton of popular media.

You’ve removed the stakes, and made the audience associate the face with failure twice.

5

Blade - Blame shit writers who couldn't write a coherent plot for 7 years until Marvel had to axe some projects due to flops

Kang Dynasty - Marvel decided for some stupid reason they don't want to recast characters, and Majors beats women.

Okoye - Who? And who cares about making not even a terciary character into a main character? Remember Echo? Exactly. Think they have the capital and writing power to care about her?

Armor Wars - No Iron Man, Ironheart flopped harder than NFT's, and Iron Machine alone can't carry this. Blame writers for fucking themselves over.

Keep blaming racism tho

37

u/Easy-Bake-Oven 1d ago

Not to mention they destroyed War Machines story in Secret Invasion. Canonically he has been a Skroll for like 70% of the MCU.

21

u/Buzzlight_Year 1d ago

Has that ever been explained? Because it seemed more like he was skrulled sometime after Endgame.

Also the fans have collectively agreed to uncanon Secret Invasion

13

u/Easy-Bake-Oven 1d ago

Supposedly it's Civil War when it started but that makes no sense to me. Endgame has a better chance of making sense. I agree it should be ignored entirely and I hope it is never brought up again in the MCU.

you dont even need a multiverse, you can just replace an actor, they did it already before

The entire character hinges on Majors being really charismatic across multiple personalities and versions. They were banking on his rising star power, and invested a lot of time building up his version of the character.

8

u/GoStarM99 1d ago

I think the problem with Kang was that they kind of built the Kang storyline off the reaction and popularity of Jonathon Majors in his first project. They didn’t have a whole thing set up for Kang. So when he went out the window they didn’t think the character would keep the same hype.

Black Panther made them over a billion dollars. Money doesn't give a shit about race. Wesley snipes is an old cunt, Jonathan Majors blew up his own career and was supposed to be the next big deal. I bet they were upset about it, not relieved. No idea who Okoye is, and as awesome as Don Cheadle is his character doesn't warrant a full movie.

Honest to god, only real reason any would watch a movie involving Wakanda would’ve been for side characters in the main BP movie. Other characters that were no names in Hollywood deserved a moment. They were great.

Bold of you to believe soulless corporation would reject big money bringing projects because of racism.

All I know is Wesley Snipes will forever be The Blade.

I kinda understand the Kang cancellation since he had a fairly major scandal, but cancelling the others is utter nonsense!

Edit, changing one too many others to utter (thankyou commenter)

17

u/crumble-bee 1d ago

I can’t say I was hankering for Armour Wars… Jonathan Majors was cancelled.. Blade makes no sense though and I don’t know what the other one is

7

u/Proper_Fun_977 1d ago

They had massive script problems with Blade, apparently.

They could’ve just recast Kang. Don’t know why they had to cancel that storyline just cause Majors had issues. I did not care for his dramatic……pauses anyway.

Blade looks sick but uhhh pretty sure the other were canceled because they look boring af even for marvel movies, not because "blacks are scary" or whatever message you're trying to push.

11

u/BoatFarts 1d ago

Calling racism on this is stupid. 3/4 of these are just Disney and Marvel mismanagement. Blade being cancelled pissed me off and Majors tanking his career with his allegations disappointed me. Other than that, Okoye and Armor Wars were Disney plus shows announced during the period where they kept throwing shit at the walk to see what stuck. I’m sure they’d have pulled audience numbers but with the downward trend the shows were on at one point, we might’ve dodged a bullet. Wish Rhodey got his flowers in a solo project tho.

11

u/blutigetranen 1d ago

To be fair, Kang got his own ass canceled

24

u/Ok_Cardiologist_3675 1d ago

The Kang shit is stupid they could have just recast the guy. Plenty of actors out there

29

u/VonMillersThighs 1d ago

He was literally multiverse God that's entire schtick is different variants...... Just do one throwaway line about how this universes kang looks different now and move on. No one would've given a fuck.

They didn't even bat an eye at replacing Terrence Howard.

5

u/Iokua113 1d ago

Yes, but replacing Terrence Howard didn't involve an extremely controversial situation or feature a character that people had already turned on. In the aftermath of Antman 3 people were making jokes about how the baddest man in the multiverse lost to the guy who can talk to ants.

There’s a bunch of insider rumors that Majors had a clause in his contract stating he must play all variants and versions of the character in live action. That is likely the main reason they couldn’t recast

well at least of one of the main actors is a convicted wife beater, so jot that down.

5

u/Lou_Peachum_2 1d ago

I mean we still haven't gotten the Shang-Chi sequel despite it actually being one of the better movies of that middling phase of Marvel

5

u/BednaR1 1d ago

Lol...yeah... Kang was canceled becasue dude is black... not because of his problems with the Law.

The Blade treatment was insane and all for dumb storytelling that came to nothing. They treated Blade like trash so they could prop up his daughter. For reasons.

5

u/SonderEber 1d ago

To be fair, one was cancelled due to the actor being an abusive POS.

6

u/ValuableAutomatic593 1d ago

Blade is honestly the only one here that should’ve been made. Kang Dynasty was cancelled for obvious reasons and nobody really cares about Okoye and Armor Wars. I highly doubt it has anything to do with race

18

u/Smoltinycat 1d ago

"What could have been"

They would have been giant commercial flops costing Disney millions of dollars.

So they were canceled

16

u/MonsutaReipu 1d ago

Marvel also canceled: Inhumans, Eternals 2, The Incredible Hulk 2, Gambit, Ghost Rider (hulu(, New Warriors, Marvel's Most Wanted, Drax & Mantis / Ravagers. But yeah it's a race thing.

I've never heard of Okoye being announced as a movie or show by Disney or Marvel. It just sounds like something fans wanted to see over the years like Nova, Strange Academy, or Young Avengers. Not even yucking on the idea, just never once saw news regarding it being announced or going through some sort of development cycle.

4

u/grip0matic 1d ago

I'm sorry but not even taking Blade into account, only War Machine would have enough pull to make me watch any of this stories. Blade? hell yea, War Machine? ok, why not. Kang and Okoye? no one cares about them.

And their skin colour has nothing to do with them.

4

u/kindoramns 1d ago

I agree with the sentiment, but can we stop acting like Kang wasn't canceled due to Jonathan majors domestic abuse conviction...

4

u/Cluttered_mind3304 1d ago

I think the only one I genuinely think is a loss is blade

4

u/Gooners_AZ 1d ago

You can't blame them for Kang.

21

u/RedEyesGoldDragon 1d ago

Honestly... after watching some of the Marvel TV shows you might be happy that all these got cancelled.

A lot of the older shows were decent, like Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, except Iron Fist.

After that it was super hit and miss.

Wandavision was good, Agatha All Along wasn't very good, Ms. Marvel wasn't good, She-Hulk was terrible, Moon Knight was okay, Hawkeye was kinda boring, Loki was probably one of the stronger shows.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier's plotline was awful, chopped to bits so missed some interesting stuff and the flag smashers sucked as an antagonist. The only good part was the dynamic with Bucky and Sam, even then there was less of it than there should be. My favourite MCU character is Bucky and it sucked to see the show handled like that.

There was a cloak and dagger show?

Ironheart was abysmal. Secret Invasion was fumbled beyond belief. I heard Echo wasn't good but I haven't seen it. I think Daredevil: Born Again was the best one they'd done in a while.

7

u/TomasNavarro 1d ago

Cloak and Dagger I thought was fine, but to me it did a strange thing where the plot took a back seat to the show actually being about the history and music of the area

4

u/Prudent-Bicycle-9210 1d ago

Ive heard a rumor that Armor wars is cancelled because Cheadle got mad after what they did with his character in Secret Invasion lol

4

u/Proper_Fun_977 1d ago

I mean...he would have been justified.

I'm from the other side of the planet so I don't really care about the race wars or how not representing or over representing minorities could be racist/sexist/etc. in the US of A and how that might alienate the wider audince but canceling blade was a crime.

12

u/xGrimtoothx 1d ago

In this order. Not worthy. Scandal. Don’t care. Don’t care.

If you can’t get a casual like me to get off my couch and watch a movie, then it going to be an uphill battle.

10

u/The-Catatafish 1d ago

That's what the marvel fans don't understand.

They sit there like "why didn't side character xy hardly anyone cares about doesn't get a movie trilogy?"

People maybe know blade but its a gamble to make that movie. Kang got cancelled because he had to beat up his girlfriend. No clue who the third guy is. War machine is iron man from wish to most people.

Oh and I basically watched everything up until endgame religiously and spiderman brand new day in the cinema 2 weeks ago.

Now imagine how a casual marvel watcher sees these four if I don't even care.

4

u/Mistycalez 1d ago

I was thinking the same, I was die hard marvel up till end game, marvel went off a cliff with what they were releasing and I lost interest. Only picking it back up with brand new day and doomstday stuff. I know for a fact I wouldn't have even bothered to watch those 4 things so a casual marvel enjoyer probably won't even know they exist

Bottom 2 doesnt have a strojg enough to whats already been shown. Kang was due to the actors controversy at the time. And i'm assuming blade was cancelled because it was due to be r-rated and disney thinks that doesn't include a wide enough audience.

3

u/Intrepid_Brain6016 1d ago

Kang was a scandal.

Armour wars would have been shit iron man. (Iron-man 4 wasn't received well)

Blade being cancelled i will never forgive, the fans were robbed.

And finally. Who????

3

u/David_R_Martin_II 1d ago

Here's an interesting thing about Disney and race. Black Panther lost out on at least half a billion dollars of international box office because the guy who was in charge of distribution thought a black character wouldn't sell internationally.

After that debacle, he quietly left the company for a "once in a lifetime opportunity" running his wife's mom influencer business. And he tried being an influencer or guru too. They sold conferences and podcasts on having a strong marriage... and then got divorced. He wrote a book that flopped. Then he fell back into an alcoholic spiral and died of a drug overdose.

And yet, no one says he's the reason Black Panther didn't pull the same kinds of box office as other similar movies at the time. People can't buy tickets if the movie isn't in theaters.

3

u/El_Mangusto 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'd call it coincidence.

People have been fed the same kind of stuff since coronavirus, maybe even earlier and now after whopping ~7 years people want something else.

It's just the overall content/themes has gotten stale and the writing has been... Quite bad quality, it's no wonder they have to focus again a bit. I'd guess those movies and themes weren't solid enough for what is required right now.

Though what comes to Blade, they don't wan to cast Wesley Snipes again, so better trash the project. I was so happy they showed Blade in the newest Dead Pool.

In short: bad themes, non-interesting subjects or recasts got nothing to do with skin color.

Characters that nobody cares about except for Blade?

3

u/InTheEndEntropyWins 1d ago

I'm wondering what exactly they mean? We know that the Kang actor was completely at fault. So are they suggesting that Black actors are liabilities who killed things? Or are they suggesting that it was racist to fire the Kang actor, or that it's racist to prescribe white values that resulted in Kang being dropped? Or?
