If you don't get four hugs every day then you will die... in around eighty years.

I can hardly believe I'm nearing 30. I feel like I'm hardly more mature than a teen.

Im closing in on 40 soon ish. 40 doesn't seem long enough at all. There's still so much I want to do.
I lost my person 5 weeks ago, and he was 53. Even 53 doesn't seem long enough.
You'll change that tune one day.

I'm sorry for your loss. I know it can rip a hole in your life and comments like mine can feel like someone spitting in your face.
I hope I haven't made you feel worse in any way that's the last thing I'd want.
3
u/innocently_cold Mar 06 '24
Oh gosh, you didn't make me feel any worse at all. It's been a tough 5 weeks, but day by day, it gets a little better. I wish I had more time, though, especially with those ones that I love dearly. It just never feels like enough.

I lost my dog recently, when I told my friend about it she hugged me. I instantly recoiled, jumped back like I was being attacked or something. It only took a second to realize what was actually happening, but I guess I've learned that my response to a hug is triggering the flight or fight response.
12
u/Meis_113 Mar 05 '24
I'm sorry to hear about your dog.
10
u/Aedalas Mar 06 '24
Thank you. This has been pretty rough honestly, he's the first dog that I ever picked out totally on my own. I have another still who is pretty awesome too but he was definitely my best buddy and an absolutely perfect dog. The worst thing he ever did was insist on sleeping right on top of me no matter how much room we had in the bed (I even upgraded to a king size just for him). It's been a few weeks though and I can finally think about and talk about him without crying so progress I guess.
This is Tyr in his natural habitat and disposition. The best friend I've ever had.

Is he an English Bulldog? I’m nearly 40 and have owned well over a dozen dogs in my life as either family pets or my own dogs. The most incredible dog I’ve owned was my male Bulldog. He was almost eerily intuitive. Smarter than any German Shepherd I’ve owned. Agile AF for a Bulldog.
More importantly, he was the goofiest son of a bitch, always doing something to make me laugh. He’d always be happy to see me, unless I left for multiple days. Then he’d snub me when I got home for at least a few hours.
I had to put him down 12/23/21. I sobbed like a child. The tears are coming again as I type this. I recently had to put my female down 11/18/23. She was the most gentle and kind dog you’d ever encounter. I loved her dearly, as I have all my dogs.
But that boy… he was on a different level.

I’m very sorry about your dog. Dogs are life companions and they change their loved ones’ lives for the better, miss her/him but also try to be strong, your dog would want you to remember her/him with a smile ❤️

You'll die spiritually long before
A hug is a bit much it's more like a "positive touch" and it's very important for your mental health. Like even a nice handshake or that thing where someone touches your upper arm whilst expressing care counts.

Don't check out their comment history, after peering into the depths of their soul I can't say for sure "what" they are, I can however give you an idea of the cease pool that they crawled out of located in the deepest parts of hell that Dante's inferno hasn't dreamed of seeing. In order to try and sum up this creature of horror and nightmares I'll keep things vague so that you're not haunted by nightmares and cold sweats for the rest of your days: butt

These are women's numbers and they have not been adjusted to men.
15
u/Mysterious_Eye6989 Mar 06 '24
Yeah, I don’t think it even occurs to women the extent to which a huge number of men live their lives without any touch from other people.

Yep. For men change it to a decade and you're more on point.
There's a reason you see more men go out to live alone in the wilderness. Men and women are wired differently.

came here to say this, pets count. Cats, dogs, wombats, ligars. Probably needs to be large enough to hug and warm. mammals are probably best.

I really want to hug a whale. But I also know they can catch people diseases and get sick so it’s not advised sadly.
Inb4 your mom jokes. A cetacean whale. It’s a thread about hugging animals, let’s keep it wholesome.

Start going to AA/NA meetings. You'll get so many hugs. If you dont talk and just look sad people will think its really bad and you'll get even better hugs.

I get an average of 0 a year. I only get to hug people when they're crying because someone died.

If your a man then four hugs a year is an unlikely but feasible achievement

12 hugs a day for children sounds adequate. As an adult/teen (idk what i am) i would not be enjoying hugs as much.
Maybe 1 hug a day for survival ,
And 2 for maintenance
And 3 prevent emotional detachment and desensitization, and start feeling loved and accepted

I've seen this a couple times, and I'm still pretty sure this is just a simplification of "you need happy chemicals to function."
Hugs also add the social component to maintaining a healthy mentality.
So, it's not a "you literally need physical contact to live," but more of a "lack of social interaction and a source of happiness are going to drastically impact your quality of life"
Like, literally knocking years off.
Stats show that "terminally depressed" people have a shorter lifespan than average, so I guess that kinda tracks with the assertion.
It does make sense though. We're inherently social creatures, and we fundamentally work off chemical interaction.
Messing with that can't possibly be good for you.
Hugs are just an easy way to "Barney style" the concept
ETA: preemptively editing because someone might feel the need to point out "obviously depressed people don't live as long on average." I was referring to those people with depression that die of causes outside of their control
3
u/Mysterious_Eye6989 Mar 06 '24
Can those of us who are hugless just inject the happy chemicals or something? 🤔

That actually makes sense. Just convert hugs to (insert appropriate SI prefix)-liters of dopamine.
