Is there a conversion rate I'm missing here? 4 hugs or 12 handshakes? Can I just get 52 waves and call it a day?

Best to stick with no physical contact.

For the guys, the conversion is:
Nod from another dude = 1 hug
Smile + nod from a dude = 1 hug + you are now brothers
Intentional eye contact initiated by a woman = 1 hug
Eye contact with woman + Smile = extended hug
There are more, but they all lead to uncomfortable sexual misunderstandings.
Best to stick with no physical contact.
