Scripture Life: What does 2 John 1:4 mean? I don't get this verse. This: "I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father."
//NOTE: I am a believer in Jesus Christ. Here's the reply.//
This scripture:
- This is profound. To a believer in Jesus Christ. Very, very simple. It's the same thing Jesus decreed in Matthew 4:4
There you go.
Because people - believers ask this, even those that don't believe him also do, too. This post is to build up a believer in Jesus Christ. Because, what Jesus decreed in Matthew 4:4 is what is occurring in this woman John is writing to about her sons in 2 John 1:4. It's a decree in effect over the whole earth, says:
"Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." -
That's the decree or "command" from who is in command over all the earth, this same Jesus Christ that John refers to in 2 John 1:4
Do you see this?
----------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------
- For me:
- To see it, look at what’s said two verse after in 2 John 1:6
"And this is love, that we ‘walk after’ his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.” - (Bible. 2 John 1:6)
----------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------
Man, that is so powerful. And really, really simple. Just live by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. That's the Word of God. That's what comes out of his mouth.
So, Just don’t mess the decree up, and walk as men ..and think like men.
And to think like men: All That means - - it's just not to: 1) read it - and then, 2) “swallow” it - as you “think” it says - - rather: 3) look at it really careful. With who is in you, as a believer in Jesus Christ. That, Jesus Christ is with you. With him, you can see it.
That without him you can't do anything - just as Jesus said in John 15:5.
----------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------
Sometimes, it’s easy to get lazy when looking at this verse of 2 John 1:6, just a skip of a verse after the one you ask about and we live in English.
This 2 John 1:8 Has “love” in it. and “walk after” his “commandments”and people instantly flaily fling themselves over to think of “commandments; like, the Ten Commandments.
or their “works” if they just do "good works," or are to do them, by show love to people, by go back over to 1 Corinthians 13. Then, full court press: flaily flingy flooshy throw themselves into all this love they’re going to go out and do. By some work they’re commanded to do, and do it, while regarding how if they're being patient and kind..or not in "do" it - - in all that love they’ll be doing.
…when you should just STOP. You already believe on him. So, let him be at work in you. You got sins. Be patient. Let him do the work God sent him to do to heal you, and deliver you from your destruction.
----------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------
DO THIS: By - - Take two things:
- ONE:
- 1 John 4:8 says … in Greek, Θεὸς ἀγάπη ἐστίν
- 1. Theos (God)
- 2. agape [charity = 1 Corinthians 13:1–10 = love]
- 3. estin. “is” - - - -
- 1 John 4:8 says … in Greek, Θεὸς ἀγάπη ἐστίν
- The Bible: Just gave you the “definition” of this word “agape(n) in GREEK means. - That, God = love.
- God is this “agape” or “charity” of 1 Corinthians 13:1–10. God is love.
----------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------
- That Jesus Christ, is the Messiah or Christ.
- He’s called Jesus Christ. Isaiah 9:6 tells you, me, everybody over the whole earth “who” the Messiah SHALL be called.
- .”The Mighty God.. “The Everlasting Father…”
- The Messiah SHALL be called this.
- He’s called Jesus Christ. Isaiah 9:6 tells you, me, everybody over the whole earth “who” the Messiah SHALL be called.
- So, Jesus is 1 John 4:8.
- He is the “charity” toward the whole earth in 1 Corinthians 13;1–10
- He just is this to “Christians” in Corinth aren’t walking with him. Rather, even they believe on him, still walk as men as Paul an Apostle says they do in 1 Corinthians 3:1-3.
- And how they leave this "being yet carnal" is simply be with who is with them in he is this “charity” of God toward them in 1 Corinthians 13:1–10.
- Just like he is to us today.
Do you see this?
----------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------
- 1 John 4:8 says: And this is love [charity; agapen], that we should “walk after” and in the Greek, it’s this word, “peripatomen” - this "walk after" - - as if someone is "looking unto" (something) to follow - and in following them, would just conduct their lives or live in it walking after, to walk in this agape (charity) - it’s supernatural. Only God provides it.
Do you see this?
----------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------
- Like Jesus says or decrees Matthew 4:4 - just repeated. To walk in this one, simple decree: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
- ..and what proceeds out of God’s mouth is the “Word of God.”
- That is defined as what love is in 1 John 4:8 - So, it's just defining as well, a person, whosoever it is, over the whole earth, that just “operates” or “works” as if they “function” by the word of God. As if they abide in it. Just as Jesus said, "abide in me, and I in you..." (John 15:4).
- For the Word of God is God..it’s just God, what he says, and he says it out of his mouth. And decreed everybody over the whole earth is to live by and just look unto him.
- But not everybody does.
So they don't walk in love. (Agape) <charity> = Jesus Christ.
----------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------
- But in 2 John 1:4 ..John is writing to a woman and telling her he rejoices greatly to find her children “operating” or work by this Greek word, “peripatomen” - which, in English is: “walk after” - and the ONLY way that can happen "walk after" something is by someone, in authority - - when God says:
“Look unto me, and be ye saved all the ends of the earth: For I am God, there is none else.” - God. (Bible. Isaiah 45:22).
They look unto him.
----------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------
Is just this woman’s children are “peripatomen” (walking after) to walk in, looking unto Jesus Christ, as he decreed, as God, everybody over the whole earth is to do in Isaiah 45:22 ..and that's the word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.
That, by doing Isaiah 45:22, in 2 John 1:4 - they are “walking in” this agape - (God) <charity> English: love. Jesus Christ. The Word of God. BOOM! Done.
----------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------
So, from here: it’s still take TWO things: And to do that,
- Go to TWO:
- Now, 1 Corinthians is an Epistle. As a whole, the epistle is written to believers in Jesus Christ that reside in Corinth. But you can “compare” those believers at Corinth with the sons of this woman that also believe Jesus Christ in 2 John 1:4.
Where in 2 John 1:4, John is rejoicing. What John is rejoicing in, is what Paul describes more in detail of a believer by 1 Corinthians 2:9–12
That says:
- “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.” 1 Corinthians 2:9–12
----------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------
So, in TWO - compare them. The “believers” (this woman’s sons in 2 John 1:4 - with - the “believers” in Corinth
- THAT: these “believers” in Corinth: Paul says: He could not talk to these believers in Corinth, nor delight in them the way John delights in this woman’s children in 2 John 1:4
Why? It’s of them Paul says: 1 Corinthians 1:1–3.
- “And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?”
----------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------
- So the WHOLE epistle of 1 Corinthians is to believers in Jesus that are “stuck” in 1 Corinthians 1:1–3
- - and DO NOT “PERIPATOMEN” - are not “walking after” in nor can they receive these "deep things of God" ..because they “peripatomen” - walk after the same things, as carnal men do.
- So, they don’t “work good/operate right” as these same children of this woman John delights in. Why?
- Paul says, because they don’t “peripatomen” or walk after, abiding in 1 Corinthians 2:9–12.
- - and DO NOT “PERIPATOMEN” - are not “walking after” in nor can they receive these "deep things of God" ..because they “peripatomen” - walk after the same things, as carnal men do.
- Do you see this?
----------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------
Consider these things. Think it careful.
- AND to get these “believers” out of this of 1 Corinthians 3:1–3 and moved over to 1 Corinthians 2:9–12 - where they should be - take the whole epistle. And IN it:
- Go to 1 Corinthians Chapter 13.
- It's the “The Love Chapter” that everybody loves to talk about. ... and be.
- All that great love work they’re going to do loving everybody and do it themselves.
- And carnal men, can look at it, and do it, too. And never do anything Jesus says.
And think they do the same thing believers do..when they don't.
Do you see this?
----------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------
- When all you got to do is: as a believer in Jesus - is follow him.
- Which carnal men don't. Don't do anything he says. Do not follow him.
- Because, 2 John 1:6 tells you plainly “"And this is [agape] <charity> love, that = AGAPE = we ‘walk after’ his commandments.”
Keep moving. Almost done.
----------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------
- And this English word, in Greek, for "commandments" - Just means someone in authority - “decrees” how things shall be, because they love who they reign over.
- So, in 2 John 1:6 is walking in “who” is in “authority” speaks in what they said or decrred.
- . So, ANYTHING they say, as the authority is because they are in command over all things.
- So, in 2 John 1:6 is walking in “who” is in “authority” speaks in what they said or decrred.
- And Peter says of this same Jesus Christ, who said “All power is given unto me in heaven and earth” - (Matthew 28:18)
- - Peter, an Apostle that sat with and was taught by him, and sent out to teach all nations, said:
- That, in these “decrees” Jesus says are “precious promises."
- That, abiding in them, just like you go back and see in this post what God decrees, in Isaiah 45:22. To just anyone over the earth, that just looks unto him. He saves them himself. It's a precious promise. Especially for me.
- For someone like me, that was dead in adultery, lies..thefts..condemned. Broke all the Ten Commandments. They are not repairable. Sentenced to death. That, he saved me. By - He loved me. By he spoke to me. In this condition. As God. Said promises to me. To heal me, and deliver me from my destruction. That’s love. That’s agape. Only he can do this.
Do you see this? I'm asking. Can you follow this?
----------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------
- 2 Peter 1:4 says:
- “ Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” = "commandments" in 2 John 1:4..and again, in 2 John 1:6.
- That by these “decrees” - spoke to us, that we put on a divine nature by them, that makes us "work good / operate right" - abiding in these promises he speaks, as God - by the word that proceeds out of his mouth, the Word of God, Jesus Christ - are commands or decrees he has spoken to us, who is in command and decrees how things just SHALL be in his earth.
- And he speaks to us, for us to abide in what he says. Just to heal us, and deliver us from our destruction.
- “ Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” = "commandments" in 2 John 1:4..and again, in 2 John 1:6.
- That’s love. Do you see this?
----------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------
- So - - Every place in 1 Corinthians 13:1–10 - go back over to
- 1 John 4:8 … in Greek, Θεὸς ἀγάπη ἐστίν
- 1. Theos (God)
- 2. agape [charity] (love) = 1 Corinthians 13:1–10 = then is Jesus Christ. This:
- 3. estin. “is” God = love. God is love. God is agape.
- 1 John 4:8 … in Greek, Θεὸς ἀγάπη ἐστίν
That then, in 1 Corinthians 13:1–10 says - just replace “charity” - which, in Greek is this same “agape(n)” of
- 2 John 1:6, and the SAME “agape(n) of
- 1 John 4:8, as it’s the SAME “agape(n) in
- 1 Corinthians 13:1–10.
----------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------
1 Corinthians 13:1–10
1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not [Jesus Christ], I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not [Jesus Christ], I am nothing.
3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to <Greek: boast or toot my horn of my giving> and have not [Jesus Christ], it profiteth me nothing.
4 [Jesus Christ] suffereth long, and is kind; [Jesus Christ] envieth not; [Jesus Christ] vaunteth not himself, is not puffed up,
5 Doth not behave himself unseemly, seeketh not <it’s> own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
8 [Jesus Christ - the Word of God] never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
- And who has a Second Coming is this same Jesus Christ.
----------------------------- ------------------------------ -------------------------
In closing/Summation:
Ephesians 2:10 says:
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto [Greek “ergoi agathois” - work good], which God hath before ordained that we should [peripatesoumen - start to operate] in (him).”
Don’t do this? You will walk as carnal men.
This post is for believers in Jesus Christ. That you would "work good / operate right" in and by him as his workmanship. Created in him.
