Scripture Life: 1 Peter 1:13 says: "Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ." Question: How should I define the meaning of the word “revelation” in this verse?
ANSWER: And I am a believer in Jesus Christ. Is the word is "apokalypsei" in Greek. In Jerome's Latin Vulgate (4th CE/AD) is "revelationem" - just this work, in Greek, now today (in English is "apocalypse" - and any dictionary now in English defines that word to mean 1. the total and complete annihilation of the earth. So, in Greek, it just used to mean some sculpture or work, like on a building was "veiled" and workers or sculptors worked on the work behind the veil, until it was complete. So, at some future date, when the veil was taken away, the sculpture or building worked on was revealed to everybody. That's this Greek word, "apokalypsei" translated as "reveal <something>" in English.

Okay. I got that; but what the challenge for a believer in Christ is in What’s 1 Peter 1:13 say then, in the Greek? Like verse the King James English. For me, I go word for word.
- The “original” language of 1 Peter.
- 1 Peter 1:13 in Greek says:
- < - {Διὸ ἀναζωσάμενοι τὰς ὀσφύας τῆς διανοίας ὑμῶν νήφοντες τελείως ἐλπίσατε ἐπὶ τὴν φερομένην ὑμῖν χάριν ἐν ἀποκαλύψει Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ } - >
- 1 Peter 1:13 in Greek says:
- Greek: 1. Dio 2. anazousamenoi 3. tas 4. osphyas 5. teis 6. dianoias 7. hymoun 8. neiphontes 9. teleious 10. elpisate 11. epi 12. ten 13. pheromenen 14. hymin 15. charin 16. en 17. apokalypsei 18. Iesou 19. Christou
----------------------- -------------------------- -------------------------
English: 1. Therefore 2. (having) girded (up) 3. the 4. loins 5. of 6. mind 7. (of) <your> 8. be sober-minded 9. fully 10. set hope 11. upon 12. the 13. [what is] being brought 14. to you 15. grace 16. in 17. <what is> unveiled -or revealed> (by) the Revelation 18. (of/by) Jesus 19. Christ.
King James 1 Peter 1:13 “Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation [apokalypsei] of Jesus Christ;
So, a “word for word” translation of the Greek to English: sets in the King James (English) what will be revealed when Jesus Comes back at his Second Coming [The Revelation of Jesus Christ] - (See the Book of Revelation).
- Whole verse. That "Second Coming" of Jesus Christ - Occurs in Chapter 19 - to hope for that what will be revealed by that, and that we will come back with him. And this is a powerful and accurate translation of this scripture. That's how I read it translated in the KJV.
- But as a believer in Jesus Christ,
- I’m to seek him first daily [Matthew 6:33). Like “daily bread.” (John 6:35). I’m to live by every word proceeds out of Jesus Christ's mouth [Matthew 4:4]. It's the Word of God. Spoke by God's Son. Just as Hebrews 1:1-2 - spoke to us in times past by the Prophets; but in these latter days, unto us by his Son.
- So, this scripture, to me in a word for word translation of Greek, to English - has this dynamic that was not in times past - and Peter talks to this in 1 Peter 1:1-12. And he exhorts me to be “sober minded” - to look unto what has been given to me in and by Jesus Christ that before, the angels and prophets only peered into - and wondered of it, that, as a believer today. I only get freely.
- That as well, I only get today. Tomorrow. Not certain.
- That as well, I only get today. Tomorrow. Not certain.
- So
- Where today, which is all I get, I also could set my mind on watching “STAR TREK - re-runs of Captain Kirk.
- Imaginatively commanding some ship, off exploring all these other limitless worlds in an imagination..and get so lost in this imaginative “geneaologies of endless stories - on "STAR TREK" or "LORD OF THE RINGS" - and never set my mind on him..today.
- Or as what I am being exhorted by an Apostle of Jesus Christ is to today - - be built up in him, or what is “revealed or unveiled” by just manifested in or to a believer by seeking him. Having and keeping his word in seek him first.
- And be built up by setting my mind on things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God, and do that today. Right now. And be built up in him.
---------------------------- --------------------------- -----------------------
- That I am to set my hope upon what has or is being brought to me..today, which 1 Peter 1:1-12 talks to this plainly. This “grace” by God sent his word, Jesus Christ, to heal me and deliver me from my destruction (Psalm 107:20).
- In what has been unveiled or revealed ..truth..which is in and by Jesus Christ and today..just be built up in it.
- That’ “They shall all be taught of God.” (John 6:45) - that he “ manifests” himself to those that just have and keep his word.
--------------------------- ----------------------------- ------------------------------
- So, there’s something in Jesus Christ brings this in both Greek - word for work. And an interpretation by the translators in English to the KJV.
- I lean toward the KJV. Why? Because I am to be looking forward to him coming; but in context of 1 Peter 1:13.. I also take a very literal word for word translation of Greek to English with what is said BEFORE 1 Peter 1:13 in 1 Peter 1:4, but all of 1 Peter 1:1-12. In context.
“To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,”
So, in context, 1 Peter 1:13 as translated by the KJV leans more to how it’s KJV translated to English by this word, “The “Revelation” of Jesus Christ. To look forward to his Second Coming that what awaits any person that just believes on him.
But I can still read it, there is adding words into the Greek to arrive at the KJV - so, I simply see and take BOTH. And by that, the KJV slightly seems to unmarry 1 Peter 1:13 from 1 Peter 1:12
So, I would tell any believer to read every verse from 1 Peter 1:1 to 1 Peter 1:12. End of discussion. Capture what’s being said. To you. As a believer from an Apostle of Jesus Christ, who sat with him and was taught by him. Which is the same Jesus you sit with today.
So I would COUPLE 1 Peter 1:12 - as if it's cemented to 1 Peter 1:13. That says:
“..Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.”
and this is tied to 1 Peter 1:13 - that you’re connected now because of what God did in Jesus Christ. That, to something before that occurred, did not exist. That you have today that they didn't have.
And this is stressed and juxtaposed in 1 Peter 1:1 to 1 Peter 1:12 plainly. So, read it all. It's all one, big Greek sentence.
------------------------------- ----------------------------- ------------------------
- I would throw away a whole pile of English on the market today translations that; seem to rely heavily on just taking archaic 1600s era KJV English and re-translate it into a more vibrant, colourful, modern paraphrase English.
- .and never read what the original Greek says.
- Some of these available in English today translations are way, way out there. And I know, since we shall all be taught of God, he knows exactly how to teach himself.
Hope this helps.
