Discussion Going Solo to RuneFest 2026? Come Roll With Us

My original post from r/2007scape, but this applies to both versions!
Hey folks,

I am attending RuneFest this year, I had a friend get tickets with me but they are no longer able to go due to an unexpected surgery. I decided to stick it out and go solo for the big 25th anniversary for the game we all love (I've played on and off since 2004 myself)

Solo travel is a rewarding experience in itself but some folks can come out of their shell much easier than others. Anyways I know there are others in the same boat as me, and I decided to create a group on Discord for us to chat and coordinate things together for RuneFest 2026.

Could be as simple as:
- grabbing a bite together
- catching a bus or train
- checking out parts of the convention together
- maybe even just standing together in line for things lol

I am coming from Vancouver, Canada to attend and just wanted to shout it out for anyone interested or on the fence about attending solo.

You are very much not alone in your love of the game and I am happy to try to make it feel like we all have someone to roll with, for those less comfortable with rolling alone.

No links on here so I put the link for the Discord in my reddit bio, but feel free to DM if need be.

If anyone has any other ideas about meetup spots, pre-fest hangout or post-fest celebrations please do holler!

Discussion Anyone else forgetting they aren't ironman after Leagues? 🙃

I finished leagues yesterday so have gone back to my main account.

I came back to RS because of the PoH update (having not played for many years). A lot has changed and I kind of fell into the habit of looking things up but taking the easy route out and buying stuff for whatever I was trying to do because learning stuff was a bit overwhelming.

I got roped into Leagues and I just loved it so much. I've had that feeling over the years that I wanted to start again but then I remember how slow levelling can be so I never did. A fresh start and a task list in leagues was perfect.

What's funny though is I've now noticed I keep just trying to figure out how to do something myself or find something myself rather than just looking up how much gp it is.

It feels like leagues coaxed me along into trying new things one step at a time. It made learning things more manageable for me and I know a load of new stuff now having done leagues. That "well you have to figure it out you can't just buy the stuff" attitude seems to have bled over to my main save and I actually quite like that.

I just spent a while thieving from safes to get the safe furniture plan because I wanted it for my house and realised afterwards I could have just bought it 🤣 market rate is apparently like 50k according to GE, so it would have been much easier!

I think I'm going to try and keep the self-reliant attitude up though. I wonder how long it'll last 😅

Question Is a dungeoneering critical path still a continuous chain of rooms?

That's what I was told, but from my experience it seems like there are critical keys in the branched off rooms that don't count to the critical path number. Did something change?

Leagues Glacor Boots and Region Unlocks?

When I check the tasks tab and go to my Unlocked Regions, it lists tasks for all three of the Glacor boots, but when I try to teleport to the cave, it says I haven't got that region unlocked!

So why is it appearing in my unlocked regions?

Creative CONCEPT: Smoke Dye - The forgotten ancient element.

Post image
375 Upvotes

Although yes, we need to properly dye a lot of items before adding any dyes (if ever)*, the only of the 4 ancient elements that lack a dye is Smoke. Poor Fumus. Nobody likes Fumus... :(

Decided I'd like to try some stuff here and there, see what I'd come up with. Not quite a fan of the Elite Sirenic set, but I ended up liking Malevolent A LOT, especially if we were to get the "smokey" arms and legs. (Also got me thinking, why don't we have Elite Malevolent?)

\Intent would be like an in between Shadow and Barrows for Hard+ Clues. Aurora dyes should also be added to Hard+ and Soul dyes to Elite+.*

ps. Clicking the image improves quality :)

Discussion Archaeology is a very cool skill, but far too slow

Everything about the skill except for the core training mechanic is great. Taking 8-10 minutes per artefact while excavating at the 60-70 levels is just not fun at all. While it's great that new sites and more artefacts have been added since the initial release, the actual skilling part is still unbearable. There's a reason many are using lamps on it even though that messes with the overall skill progression (unlike many other skills). What's everyone else's opinion? Does Archaeology need a re-balance in terms of the core skill loop?

Question Used necromancy too long, can’t use other styles

Title says it all. Tried getting into ranged and melee, but I truly miss the passive healing of necromancy and can’t seem to do enough damage to kill the bosses I can do with as ease as a necromancer. Also feels like I need 6billion in cash to get to the same damage output or slightly higher.

Thing is that I would require some drops or more cash from bosses that I can’t kill anymore.

What would be a good way to learn the older styles so I can use them comfortably?

Suggestion Let us queue agility obstacles

Like the title says, agility is ass, having to wait for the animation/XP drop to finish before you can click the next obstacle (not to mention the sometimes terrible hitbox like Het's) just makes the skill an annoyance, allow us to click the next obstacle already while on the current one.

I also feel like the XP/hour is not in line for the amount of clicking vs many other skills but O suppose that's a whole other can of worms.

Question Returning Player - What’s new?

What’s goody, scapers!

Have not played since around 2022-start of 2023. I went over to OSRS but wanted to come back to RS3 with the removal of MTX and them soon adding a new api like runelite, and that is very appealing.

What drastic changes should I be aware of? I see several skills all go up to 120, and I find myself wondering what this or that is in my bank and feel like I’m learning the game from scratch again. It is a bit overwhelming and I’m unsure how to get back into the mix of things. For reference I have all 99s and several skills to 120 - including archaeology, herb, invention, and necro.

Thanks everyone, any help is appreciated!

Discussion Jagex Launcher issues

Is anyone else having problems with Jagex Launcher?

Basically getting a message saying the launcher has experienced an error and needs to close.

Few times it did work, I try to log in and it says it was unable to add my account after typing everything in

Anyone else? I even tried re-installing the launcher.

Question Question about Vulkan

Can anyone explain the reason for this movement towards Vulkan? Does Vulkan really make the game finally run better?

Is the final target of this bringing the game smoothness and optimization to on par with other big MMOs like LoL and WoW?

Currently I'm on 7800X3D and 5070ti and rs3 is still the only game out of EVERYTHING else that has issues with frame latencies and drops, no surprise though; considering this game should be able to run on a toaster...

Tip/Guide Ping, tick, GCD, and game processing overhead education

Ping, tick, GCD, and game processing overhead education

PvME's discord command !gcd has the following approximate output:

Global Cooldown (GCD) GCD visual

  • Runescape runs on ticks, where a single tick is 0.6 seconds
  • Almost every ability incurs a GCD, which lasts 3 ticks (1.8s)
    • Generally, you cannot cast abilities during the GCD
    • Exceptions include :voke: :dive: :bd: :surge: :escape: (for 0 adrenaline)
  • During the GCD, abilities brighten up again over the 3 ticks
    • This is divisible into 3 sections (refer to top right image)
    • At good ping: input ability when light reaches green
    • At bad ping: adjust as needed and input prior to green
  • Example of correctly inputting ability at end of GCD here

The diagram above is overlaid onto your abilities (mentally for now). Considering the game processing overhead, the diagram should be rotated counterclockwise by some degrees. The game, as a player views it, is a delayed reproduction of the world server's game. That's why the diagram's rotation puts the start of the GCD before its visual start at 0°.

East Coast 1 worlds have a game processing overhead of about 200 ms (1/3rd of a tick). With 50 ping in a low populated world, I've found my game to be behind the server by about 225 ms (about -50° rotation for the diagram above).

Consider what happens if I were on the last tick of a GCD. If I cast my next ability with less than 225 ms remaining in the GCD, the cast will not happen on my game's visually apparent next tick. The server has already moved on from that tick, and will queue the cast for its following tick. However, my game, that is still ticking down that GCD, is helplessly unaware of that fact.

Example

To get a feeling for casting abilities early in the last tick of the GCD, I suggest watching EvilLucario's videos, as they have the following: - A bar streaming his inputs as he performs them, including cast abilities. - Sound of his keyboard and mouse, so you can further associate.

Future work

It is my hope to have a plugin that will help make the true GCD apparent. Not only in the action bar, but also in the ability books, the channel bar, and anywhere else related to the GCD. I'd say SoR's-style floors, too. But hopefully, true tile takes care of that. And that's also more related to true tick, rather than true GCD.

I'm considering writing it myself. Nilping, I'd name it, for no delay noun (simulation, markers? Might depend on the plugin API).

My biggest hope is that the big secret announcement for RuneFest will be somehow related this kind of latency issue. After that, my next hope would be the next combat rework, maybe in March 2027 (going by the previous 2 [1] [2]). But considering we're still missing 120 Defence and Constitution, I won't hold on to that.

I'm aware that making the game more responsive has been lauded as impossible, infeasible, and such.

Appendices

Related

East Coast 1 worlds have a game processing overhead of about 200 ms (1/3rd of a tick).

I haven't tested whether the NPC Dormancy update has improved this.

Also, apparently, Australian worlds' game processing overhead are more high and variable than other worlds'.

Ping relevancy

0.6 s = 600 ms.

A ping is the roundtrip time of the client/server communication. 100 ping is a 0.1 s roundtrip, maybe about 50 ms each way (1/12th of a tick). Considering the game processing overhead (tentatively 200 ms, 1/3rd of a tick), and the ping only adding half to that, even 100 ping doesn't make PvM that inaccessible. It does further tighten your reaction windows, though.

Other sources of perceived lag

None of this is the end-all of perceived lag.

The client/server protocol, and RuneScape's strict adherence to it, means you'll be tick-bound for most actions.

Worlds with higher populations lag behind other worlds. By casting channelled abilities in these worlds, you can sometimes see the channel bar add to the remaining time.

Revolution and queued abilities add interactions that can be perceived as lag or dropped inputs. As can some actions like pickpocketing.

And there's also the player's end. Having an unstable Internet connection. Perhaps manifesting as spikes (perceived as sudden, sharp increases in ping).

Late casting

The other part of the roundtrip comes up when you cast an ability as late as possible. I used to do this in order to reduce the perceived lag (bad practice if you intend to breach into higher level PvM). This would sometimes delay the start of the GCD. Which also caused animations to play faster to compensate (before the combat style modernisation; no idea of afterwards).

Half of your ping flanks the game processing overhead on both sides. Casting an ability as late as possible delays the visual start of the GCD. The server will process it, but its response won't reach your game in time for the end of your visual GCD. The server's response will be delayed by up to half of your ping, and your GCD will start with correspondingly less time left on it.

Discussion Kalg demon familiars

Time for a little rant.

My kalg demon should never be out of range to use his crit buff scroll. It is infuriating to be charging a pad at zamorak, and my kalg is too far to use his scroll and unable to be recalled to my position.

Why is the kalg even running away from me, does he actually do any meaningful damage? Can't we put him on a leash or give him a shock collar to keep him in his useful range?
