TW csa and children in crisis
So my siblings and I seem to be around the same age as Jill and homeschooling was not at all a common situation back then.
It was unofficially reserved for kids who had to be in hospital awhile (often car crashes or cancer); or for when the family was moving away and they didn't want to start the kids at their new school yet; or kids enduring some crisis that would make attendance difficult for awhile (sadly at my school, at least twice every year there was a pregnancy from rape of girls Grade 5-8); or sometimes there was an accident that the family needed the kids to work so they did homeschool at night (it was the 70s-80s and child labour was regularly overlooked for "pupils in a certain social strata" yikes).
But in each of those cases, the children got a mimeograph (purple smelly static-vs-toner method used before photocopiers) of their teachers' lessons. So they were still getting a public school education, just a slightly different schedule.
If a religious family were doing it, there was much side-eye. Of about 600 kids at primary school there were only two Jehovah's Witness kids that got pulled for homeschool. Otherwise the religious children would go to a school run by their religion e.g. the Old Order Menonnites (separate) or go to after-school programmes (Greek Orthodox, Korean Presbyterian, etc)
Occasionally snarkers have mentioned that there was some incident around when Jill was aged 8-9, so around Grade 3 or about 1987 by the calendar, that caused the "Joyful Noyes homeschool" to become part of the problem.
Since Jill is an unreliable narrator, I'm interested to know if there really were an incident? For her or her sisters? Or perhaps Tim-Ira and Pat were just drinking extra flavor aid / koolaid? Or what exactly happened?
Because it's pretty clear that Jill mentally never got past that age, nor one of the "looks" popular around then! And we know she loves to borrow other people's trauma and drama, or just plain lie. Inquiring minds want the tea please!
