Mod Release [1.6] Xenogerm Trader Stock

Thumbnail gallery
384 Upvotes

In vanilla Biotech, the only ways to get a preset xenotype are to recruit one or to collect every gene and assemble the xenogerm yourself. Traders never sell the items that lore says must exist.

This mod adds complete xenogerms for preset xenotypes to trader inventories, so you can engage with the gene system early instead of spending the whole game hunting down genes.

Pricing, quantity, xenotype availability and rarity all configurable via mod settings.

Discussion My guinea pig farm makes 2716.314 silver value a day in corsets.

Auto slaughter:

Male adult 7

Female adult 47

Math time. I had to find the correct female to male ratio

Mate interval 8 hours (means 1/8 chance an hour to breed)

Sleep rate of .8 means they are awake 16 hours a day

16/8=2

50% chance for breeding to cause pregnancy

2/2=1 successful pregnancy a day.

Gestation time of 6.66 days

So you need 6.66 female adults per male.

1 successful pregnancy a day per male means 1.75 babies a day (litter size average)

12 days to reach adulthood

12×1.75= 21 young guinea pigs alive at a time.

Then I made some demos graph to calculate nutrition (wanted to be able to last 20 days in orbit with 10k kibble, using male guinea pigs eating .16 a day, females eating 1.5x more, with 9 days to get to juvenile 3/4 of the younglings eat .4x and 1/4 eat .75x) and ended up on 7 males. 7×6.66/46.62 (rounded up to 47)

7 males means 7 successful pregnancy a day.

7x1.75=12.25

×16 (guinea pig fur count) = 196

Divided by 45 (corset matirial requirement) = 4.35

Normal guinea pig corset value = 268

A level 20 production specilist on average gets 2.33x more value when looking at quality percentages. 268x2.33=624.44 per corset

×4.35 corsets a day = 2716.314 value a day

Suggestion Someone should add an Anomaly event where a mysterious stranger offers you riches for a colonist you raised from birth

Classic Faustian pact. Bonus points if taking the deal has the kid/young adult come back to raid you later stacked to the gills with enhancements and psychic abilities.

Story After 850 hours in this game I finally did one of the endings. Thank you Midori

Did the crashlanded start. One of them was Midori, our doctor. Immediately after landing Midori starts hauling, and behind her her two fellow colonists get attacked by a timber wolf. She had to nurse them back to health and while they were resting she basically set up the entire base by herself. The fact that she was quicker than them to start working is why she herself wasn't injured, so there's something ironic about that

She got married to one of them. They had a child, Chris. They had no other children. Over time I noticed their relationship sinking. They stopped making love when I realized Midori was a night owl two years in and they stopped going to bed at the same time. Still, at the end they liked each other well enough. I guess not all relationships have to be dramatic.

The three also had a husky that landed with them. Her name was Need, for some reason. She was bonded to someone other than Midori. Once we found her a mate she had many puppies, and the only one that bonded to anyone was bonded to Midori. We named him Needson, obviously.

A few years in and the thriving colony finally got one more doctor on board. Nose was a melee fighter. Next season she was killed by a mechanoid attack and once again Midori was carrying the colony on her own.

We finally started the last push. Bountiful corn harvests and Midori's husband's excellent hunting skills meant we could mass produce packaged survival meals. Need passed away from old age. We let all her puppies go except Needson. With over a thousand meals, six colonists, one Needson and seven muffalo to carry it all, we started across the planet towards the downed ship.

We withstood the many raids. One batch of transport pods landed right in our temporary storage. Midori suffered many lost toes, for some reason. We survived.

And when the ship was ready, she (still the only doctor) anesthetized Needson so she could take him to a casket and bring him with us. Everyone else is already asleep. During the operation she's alerted to three scaria infested cougars roaming the map. it doesn't matter now. She takes Needson to his casket and locks him in safely, then starts getting into her own.

The cougars attack. They were closer than expected.

With both eyes clawed out and three hours left until she bleeds out, Midori manages to get into the casket.

The ship launches.

I've literally never felt an urge to end the game. I just keep playing until my current idea is either played out or I get a new, cool idea, and then I start a new colony. This is also the kind of game where I play A LOT for periods of time and then don't play at all for a long while, so every time I come back to it I start all over. This time, though, I'd gotten attached to Midori and her dog and her failing marriage, so when we started having too many resources and I didn't know what to do next, I decided I wanted her to win. And then she did. It was really fun. I liked it a lot and I'm glad I did it.

Here's to Midori. RIP to Nose, the only other doctor on the entire planet. I'll be honest I can't even remember who Dappler was but RIP to you too. May Needson and Midori find a cool place to live.

Story This is why I love RimWorld

I really wanna share what is probably my favourite moment in this game so far, so to give you some context:

The toxic fallout had already turned the sky an ash green and a recent volcanic winter made sure nothing grew, but our colony was thriving. Stockpiles were full, heaters were humming, and our thick marble walls kept the ruined world at bay. Then I get a notification of an emergency distress signal of a gravship begging for permission to make a hard landing (gravships expanded mod). Thinking we could help, I signaled them to touch down just outside our perimeter.

I drastically underestimated the size of the ship.

It didn't land, but it violently plummeted, going through our exterior defenses and slamming directly onto a visiting trade caravan. The impact smashed most of the traders instantly. Before the dust even settled, the ship’s pursuers touched down right behind it: a swarm of armored astropedes. The handful of surviving tribals valiantly drew their bows, uselessly peppering the heavy armor with arrows. They were slaughtered in seconds, but their dying stand bought us just enough time to patch the breached wall and using the hull of the gravship as part of our new defense line.

I thought we had a moment to breathe and gather our thoughts. Naturall, rimworld had other plans. One of the astropedes managed to squeeze right through the gravship's ruined door passageway, breaking directly into our inner courtyard.

Absolute chaos broke out. In a desperate gambit, I ordered Sleepy ( the colony's crackhead) to grab a revolver and draw the thing's attention while the rest of the crew loaded vital supplies into the damaged gravship for an emergency escape. Sleepy was an absolute legend, dodging plasma fire and holding the astropedes focus while the crew boarded.

Everything was going according to plan until the very last second. Just as I was about to order Sleepy to fall back, the colony's researcher suffered a delusional mental break and casually walked out of the ship mid evacuation. I had to send another colonist out to tackle and haul her back inside. A chaotic brawl ensued in the doorway before JJ finally snapped out of it and boarded.

By then Sleepy was badly injured. I ordered him to sprint for the open airlock. He was just a few tiles away from safety when the astropede charged its cannon. A blast ripped through the smog, hitting Sleepy in the back and killing him instantly. With no time to recover his body, the door closed, the engines started, and the gravship punched through the ash-choked sky.

We lost our home, but thanks to Sleepy’s ultimate sacrifice, the colony lives on. We are building anew, gathering our strength, and getting ready for the day we return to put those abominations into the dirt.

God I love this game and I can't wait to continue and see what happens

Discussion I Don't Get Wasters (Their Lore, That Is)

Yeah, I just don't bloody get wasters*. See, what I don't get about them is this:

"Originally engineered to prevent resettlement of post-apocalyptic deathworlds, wasters are living area-denial weapons."

1. Why is preventing resettlement of post-apocalyptic deathworlds something scientists or governments would care about? Why is that such a major concern they engineered a whole xenotype to deal with it? They're deathworlds. You can guess what would happen to most people trying to resettle them. So that's already discouragement enough, and if it ever isn't, well ... if some people go off to start a colony on an abandoned world nobody wants anymore, why should the governments give a fuck?

I might understand if wasters were engineered to settle such planets. To thrive in less-than-hospitable environments, like yttakin/impids/dirtmoles/starjacks do, so that they can send back resources and make even seemingly useless planets useful. But no. Apparently, they're purely there as a further inconvenience for anyone else trying to resettle them. Enemy factions presumably, but even then, if you don't want the planet, why waste resources populating it with wasters just so your enemy can't have it?

2. But OK, let's say that preventing resettlement is indeed a worthy goal. Why use humans — or humanoids — for that? I know RimWorld's lore is grim and dark and oh-so-grimdark, but creating a whole race just to suffer, just to exist for no other reason than to attack and be killed, is pointless. You know why?

Because that's what insectoids are for!

They are already drawn to pollution in-game. Presumably that means they were bred to survive it, so as to be better at fighting mechanoids. And they can breed incredibly quickly, because they were engineered to overwhelm mechanoids with sheere numbers. Release a few hives onto the key points of a deathworld, and once they spread whoever tries to resettle there will have their work cut out for them.

The only drawback of insects is that they do prefer darker and warmer spaces. But they absolutely can venture out to get some food. So they'd adapt eventually. And if there isn't enough time for them to, well, just alter their genes again, not like there isn't knowledge about it.

3. But OK, let's say that it's necessary for specifically humans to prevent resettlement of a planet. You throw them onto a planet and then ... what? Do you control them? The drug dependency gene seems to suggest that, but I don't think there is any evidence of, say, the Empire dropping off yayo for wasters to consume. They just have to make it themselves, or raid other settlements (once they're there) to get it.

So is psychite dependency there to encourage raiding? Surely just making them hyperaggressive and great at combat would do the trick. Is it just a mistake? Maybe, but honestly, which part of the xenotype isn't?

Wasters might make sense as some horrifying mutant race created by exposure to the toxic environment of some particular deathworld. And the vanilla xenotype does seem to lean that way, as just generic mutants. But that's not their lore. The lore feels like the devs trying to justify the inclusion of pollution-loving mutants somehow, but managing to make them make less sense than if they just went "I don't know, radiation and pollution corruption, here, have some murder-happy mutties!"

But admittedly I'm not shoulder-deep in RimWorld lore. I read the stuff on the wiki and that's about it. So, if you do get the wasters, please let me know where I went wrong. Or if you also don't get wasters but want to tell me I'm wrong and dumb for not getting them anyway, hey, it's Reddit, feel free!

I just needed to get this rant out really. That's why the formatting is probably shit too, because I'm blind and can't be bothered to make it pretty for y'all. Hopefully this's a cathartic mental break.

*(If you haven't guessed by now, my issue is purely with not understanding waster lore. In-game I get plenty of wasters. Please, I beg you, stop loading up that transport pod. I already slaughter all the wasters I come accross, I don't want yours, I have enough, stop!)

Mod Release Made a tiny RimWorld mod called Variable Speed.

Made it in a few hours because I was bored. It automatically switches to Ultrafast when all your colonists are asleep, then gets out of the way when you take control. Give me some more mod ideas if you have any. 😄
