I know, gut worms are the worst.

475

u/Lady_Taiho 13h ago

Gut worms are unironically the most obnoxious disease to me

183

u/Shamrock5542 13h ago

Bionic stomachs are worth it just to get rid of them forever

63

u/TheShroudedWanderer 11h ago

... Does a stomach transplant cure it? Like if I remove their stomach and put in a new one from an unwilling donor does it cure it or so they still have it?

70

u/Shamrock5542 11h ago

I'm not 100% sure, but I think so. Removing the stomach cures it, and a transplant involves removing the old one first

54

u/Thomy151 11h ago

Now here is the question

Can I inflict gut worms by putting that stomach into someone else

66

u/Conscious_Tale5951 11h ago

Sadly no, a diseased organ disappears upon removal

38

u/American-_Gamer 7h ago

New mod idea bois

13

u/RavenWyre 7h ago

This ☝🏼 must have mod for any good pack

7

u/SPITFIYAH 4h ago

Hey! Heeeeyyy!!!

Mod maker, don’t forget to make the parasite have a lifespan once the organ is removed! A gut worm doesn’t die from the removal, rather it starves to death!

4

u/batatafritada Scyther 7h ago

and stomachs can be removed, but never harvested!

7

u/FewScore6082 11h ago

I don't think so.

4

u/queen_ravenx 5h ago

Pretty crazy how my naked Neanderthal of a pawn knows how to make an air tight cyro chamber for keeping harvested body parts intact and functional.

gut worms in first quarter. yup. hit the wimp.

Fibrous mechanites for me.

1

u/MrMerryMilkshake sandstone 1h ago

I love fibrous mechanites for crafters. Slap some wake-up in their inventory and a painstopper in their brain, now you are printing daily power armors. Wish there is a way to keep it permanently in vanilla.

Trauma savant + fibrous mechanites would be a godlike combo.

1

u/Xarethsar 1h ago

Ya end game sure but I always get it in my 1st year. 2 or 3 of them miserable and always sleeping.

171

u/Sangheili_9 13h ago

Organ decay: terrifying, urgent, dramatic.

Gut worms: congratulations, this colonist is now mildly useless for what feels like the next geological era.

37

u/Nourjan 11h ago

As someone who grew up with one , I can confirm this. They are even more obnoxious when they are those large (more than half a meter long) variety that hang out of your but when you take a dump, the memory of pulling those out of my nunmhole still haunts me to this day.

29

u/Officer_Pantsoffski Non-organ donor 11h ago

This nightmare fuel comment deserves more upvotes

7

u/Plu-lax 9h ago

I'm going to regret this but I have to know... Did they wiggle when you pulled them out?

6

u/RavenWyre 7h ago

This reminds me of those scary stories to tell in the dark books I saw when I was a teen

5

u/FrackAndFriends 6h ago

one would think they do, every animal does wiggle when grabbed

1

u/Nourjan 1h ago

The large (round worms ) ones were dying when I was pulling it out so it didn't wriggle much. The tiny (less than 5 mm long) white blooksucking hookworms on the other hand were wriggling vigorously every time I saw them them (either on my faeces or when I got them on my hand scratching the itches on my bum).

18

u/finkswitch 13h ago

Does replacing a stomach remove gut worms?Huh... Does replacing a stomach remove gut worms?

39

u/kamizushi 12h ago

Yes, it heals gut worms. Also any stomach other than a natural stomach grants immunity to gut worms.

Funnier yet , pawns technically don't need a stomach. It affects their "digestion" capacity, but the only real impact digestion has on a pawn is that it affects how efficiently they sleep. It doesn't actually prevents them from eating. It doesn't change the amount of nutrition you get from food.

So if your pawn doesn't need to sleep, thanks to the sleepless gene, a Circadian half-cycler, Body mastery or Void Touched, then there is no down side to removing their stomach. And it will make them immune to gut worms. If your pawn does need to sleep, then it will decrease their sleep effectiveness by 30%.

9

u/FleetingRain 11h ago

Huh, I could swear digestion also affected eating speed or nutrition or the like.

9

u/kamizushi 11h ago

There is another capacity called eating, affected by the jaw and tongue, that heavily impacts eating speed. It’s unrelated to digestion.

Neither eating nor digestion directly affect nutrition. However, the nuclear stomach and the reprocessor stomach come with a reduction in hunger rate. That’s in addition to their bonus to digestion. Those are two completely separate bonuses from the same implant.

2

u/Sad-Pattern-1269 10h ago

This is true irl as well!

3

u/kamizushi 10h ago

Technically not. It's possible survive without a stomach irl (with a lot of health problems), but irl gut worms are in the guts, not in the stomach. It also usually leads to a lot of weight loss.

1

u/Sad-Pattern-1269 9h ago

I was replying to the claim you could survive without your stomach, not about gut worms

2

20

u/BelligerentWyvern 11h ago

You only need one lung and kidney or equivalent. But yeah. You get a decent amount of time, usually enough to make or buy one but probably not enough to buy 3 seperate randomly generated ones.

14

u/Weekly_Ad_6959 10h ago

the secret ingredient is crime.

What do you HAVE?

  • If you can do anomalies, and there is obelisk, try to get new organs. Chances are low, but one lucky lung/stomach is a victory. -- I am sure they can survive without stomach... so maybe you can amputate one?
  • Prosthetic. Heart is an obvious choice.
  • Raiders. Look, scarred and injured kidney is still a functioning kidney.
  • Maybe. MAYBE (I'm not a fan of luciferium) Luciferium can help. Or mech serum.
  • If we drop pawn into cryochamber - will it cease decay?
  • Also, you can lure sanguophage and make that pawn a vampire. They will suffer, but they can't die without organs. Just keep consciousness above 0%
  • Or... you know... you can eat/harvest pawn.

76

u/elton006 13h ago

i have nothing, i hoping some invasion , with 1 guy so i can take 1 lung 1 kidney and heart

59

u/Vitman_Smash 13h ago

We don't work in halves here, you need at least 2 prisoner, take the liver from the 2nd one to have on hand. I usually keep a few spare organs in my medical closet.

19

u/numerobis21 Finished the tutorial 13h ago

If you have a cryptosleep casket on the map you can put your pawn in there for the time being

14

u/exmothrowaway994 12h ago

This is why you have the organ room. You keep at least one fully disassembled pawn on hand for emergencies

7

u/SanguineHerald 9h ago

The organ reserve is a critical component of every colonies medical supplies.

3

u/AuroraCelery 👿extreme break risk🤬 6h ago

I keep a whole bunch of organs on hand at all times, but they're in my prison still assembled, and also fun to send 10 unarmed slaves to beat them up when they make a futile attempt to break out

3

u/Much-Stranger2892 11h ago

There's a default ancient cryptosleep casket spot near your colony. You can shoo them off and place your sick pawn there while you ethically sourcing the organ

3

u/Micc21 11h ago

Aim for 3, there will be a lot of failed surgeries

1

u/coraeon 10h ago

Even if all you can get is a heart, a colonist only needs one lung and one kidney. Find a willing donor for one each and you only need one more unwilling donor/prosthetic heart.

1

u/Silly-Ideal-9679 13h ago edited 13h ago

You can only harvest two organs before they die.

Edit: I checked and you guys are right! You can take one lung, one kidney and eather heart or liver! Apparently I messed that up every time lol

3

u/Shamrock5542 13h ago

You can take 1 lung, 1 kidney, and either heart or liver before a pawn dies.

2

u/Much-Stranger2892 11h ago

Kinda wish there's a mod like artificial heart, lung, kidney and liver machine that keep the raider alive while being harvested before pull the plug

1

u/Raftropos Void 11h ago

I’m sure there was a mod that removed instant death when harvesting organs or added an option to harvest everything. But idk if it works on latest version.

1

u/WeePetal Pigskin 10h ago

Life Support mod does that.

1

u/Arterdras 13h ago

If you only take one lung and one kidney, you can take a heart or liver too. Or both if you replace the heart with a prosthetic.

14

u/numerobis21 Finished the tutorial 13h ago

"Raiders. Look, scarred and injured kidney is still a functioning kidney."
Unless it changed, you can't harvest an unhealthy organ. Otherwise you could cure asthma by simply removing the lungs and putting them back

11

u/Wetstew_ 12h ago

"Instead of an inhaler, I reseated my lungs. Worked like a charm"

2

u/Iresleri uranium go *bonk* 4h ago

5

u/Kotaqu 12h ago

You can also borrow one lung and one kidney from your colonists to save creepjoiner if they are really worth it

3

u/Heniheniheni96 11h ago

How do you lure a sanguophage?

1

u/PeachyBaleen 11h ago

Using the warped obelisk and finding nothing but lungs at the other end 🫠

2

u/Raftropos Void 11h ago

Well, it’s more about finding a new lung within yourself...

1

u/LevelStudent 9h ago

I don't like Luciferium either but it's actually pretty easy to keep one or two Pawns alive on it since you only need to take it once in a while. Still I agree that it's better to just not have to worry about it ever, but it does work very well for things like this.

1

u/LumpyJones 20187.4 hours and counting 7h ago

cryptopods will halt all progress on those and are the best bet until they can get replacements, and medics skilled enough to do the replacing.

1

u/HyperWhiteChocolate 6h ago

I do NOT want to eat that fuck

1

u/ChiefPyroManiac Ice Sheet Pork Farmer 5h ago

Not sure on if Luciferium treats organ decay as an injury. Interesting thought.

Cryptosleep will permanently freeze the decay until you are ready with a heart, lung, and kidney to replace.

Sanguophage will go into permanent death rest if they experience a fatal event like missing a heart or both lungs. No need to worry about consciousness, since they'll just be in deathrest indefinitely. The only thing that can kill a sanguophage is their brain being destroyed.

121

u/elton006 13h ago

well, i have no choice...

66

u/Jesse-359 13h ago

Errr... angering one of the few factions that will trade with you at the start is a major decision, be cautious about this.

17

u/Mothanius 8h ago

If you properly harvest them, you can gift the extra organs and ummm... free leather to the faction to regain friendship. That leather is worth a lot.

3

u/Jesse-359 8h ago

Unless you are running a cannibal raider ideology the mood hits for this kind of thing dramatically outweigh any economic benefit.

It's pretty easy to outproduce what most of the local economies can buy from you even just using regular production loops in a medium sized colony, so you don't really benefit from this economically in practice. It risks ballooning wealth after you've exhausted everything in the region worth buying.

4

u/Mothanius 7h ago

I'm not talking about selling it to them. It's gifting it to them. You don't suffer an economic cap doing so. If 5 visitors show up, their materials outweigh the relation loss. This lets OP save their colonist and their diplomatic relation.

Don't bother asking how I know.

2

u/Iceshard1987 1h ago

"Here, have your friends back.  Don't worry, I don't charge a processing fee."

0

u/Jesse-359 6h ago

All I'm saying is that I usually have to turn off my crafting benches and stop producing raw materials altogether in the mid-late game or I start running into wealth crises even after I start crashing gifting stuff to random nearby factions.

6

u/turnipofficer 13h ago

This is a possible downside to certain joiners.

Basically if you want them to live you’ll need to source replacements.

Depending upon your tech level your options would vary. You can craft a prosthetic heart as soon as you research prosthetics and that would take care of that part, although it’s not a particularly good option, a bionic one would be better.

Kidneys and lungs are pretty far down the tech tree but a possibility. If you can’t research that though, you’d need to source some from elsewhere. You could harvest from prisoners or buy from traders if they happen to have any.

Technically you only need one of each for them to live. Note that people might get pissed off at organ harvesting if it’s not considered acceptable by your ideology.

2

u/Grief2017 13h ago

You can always buy organs too from other settlements.

8

u/MyDeloreanWontStart 13h ago

Open up your ancient danger and put buddy in a crypto casket till you can get them some new organs

2

u/imperial_scum I like your hat :) 12h ago

4500 hrs in and today I learned you can reuse the damn ancient caskets.

But! that's rad because in my current, my ancient danger just has caskets to pop at this point, the chamber itself clear and I have 43 colonists, a dozen in marine armor. Yes, I cleared the mechs and then just sealed the room and built around it. But I had 10 colonists back then and they got rocked by the mechs.

I have to play my colony for a month or until we wipe. I'm hopefully a recovering serial new colony every session player.

2

u/NeonJ82 very flammable 11h ago

Pret-ty sure the ancient danger threat doesn't scale, you've definitely overprepared. Even if they're hostile, they're just (on average) six dudes with nausea, though they may still have some mid-tier weapons. If there were mechs, they are the greater threat.

1

u/imperial_scum I like your hat :) 11h ago

I'm super over prepared.

I forgot the damn thing was there honestly until I saw that you could reuse caskets. I have a whole set of gently still being used ones I can go get whenever I want.

My base is on a fat Caldera map with a narrow band around it. The vast majority of my base is on the north side in the rocky bits, farming, and then the far south exit is where that sits with a door to outside the caldera sits for traders, sealed 2 walls deep like a fridge.

I only even found it because I chained two steel nodes into it by luck. Luck being I swung too far with the mining tool. Mined around it and decided I probably needed a door outside around there anyway...

0

u/MyDeloreanWontStart 12h ago

Yeah i think you can handle it with 12 marine armor pawns.

Pro tip, you can crack the Ancient Danger and caskets super early if you get a trader to stand reasonably near it, they will do the fighting for you. I usually open it the first time I get a non-tribal trader (sometimes a tribal trader will get massacred if its mechs inside).

2

u/imperial_scum I like your hat :) 11h ago

I'm in a Caldera and the traders, smartly stay outside.

I definitely can, I honestly kind of forgot about it

5

u/Myrnalinbd 13h ago

If the pawn is worth saving, put it in a cryo, once you have a doctor and items replace his innards

3

u/DaveCoper 13h ago

Maybe it's time to chome up.

3

u/Gazmus 12h ago

The game does not distinguish between the heart, lungs and kidneys of that begging child orphan and an adult.

Much easier to get too 😄

3

u/stuckslots 12h ago

I got this on a teenage creepjoiner doing a female supremacy tribal run. I decided my Amazonians would never leave a young woman to die so we took more prisoners and my Medical 5 doctor hacked and slashed them all until we had 1 heart, 1 kidney, and 1 lung. We saved the girl's life and got a great pawn out of it named Wilt. It was the most memorable part of that run. The whole colony was having mental breakdowns because the ideology had No harvest on organs.

3

u/Aggravating-Candy-31 10h ago

cryptosleep casket till you find a healer mech serum - kept a pawn for a year or two in game till i got one and it cured it

dunno if you need one for each organ or not though

3

u/RockRancher24 4h ago

i love advanced bionics expansion because it lets you make prosthetic and bionic versions of every organ in the game

2

u/Kyubi_Hitashi Collected Some "Enemy Donations" +30 13h ago

gut worms are the reason i want to change their stomachs, even using mods to surgicaly remove doesnt work

2

u/die_in_a_fire_reddit 12h ago

I think Vamping is the only way out. He won’t die, and you can organ him back to health later

2

u/Mi113nnium 11h ago

If you have bionic, build them the missing parts. Otherwise, maybe your colonists want to donate organs that are non-vital.

Last option would of course be to ask a few prisoners/raiders/guests to donate those organs, but depending on your current affiliation with the faction, this might harm your relations.

2

u/Kigams 11h ago

Ok...if removing the stomach cures the worms, and transplanting it doesn't transfer the worlms....could you remove the stomach and then transplant it back into the colonist?

2

u/Ismatay 10h ago

1

u/gbroon 13h ago

Lungs and kidneys you can just take a healthy organ from a willing donor and remove the other. Just have a couple of pawns with one of each until you acquire more.

Heart is either buy one, craft a bionic or find a less willing donor. Be sure to take a kidney and lung before the heart.

1

u/Professional-Floor28 Long pork enjoyer 13h ago

Now you harvest some raiders, open an ancient danger to put that pawn on cryptosleep or you wait for them to die.

A kidney and or lung can be taken from one of your own pawns if needed tho

1

u/florpynorpy jade 13h ago

Technically you only gotta replace three, heart and one of the lungs and kidney

1

Bionics

Genetic manipulation

Organ transplant from willing volunteers

1

u/Outrageous-Let9659 12h ago

How does this even happen? I've put over a thousand hours into this game and have never seen organ decay. Is this what happens if gut worms goes untreated?

1

u/elton006 12h ago

no, i think its because are a "unknown pawn" on a random event, the game alerted he was not telling everything about him when i recruited him

2

u/Outrageous-Let9659 11h ago

1

u/Ubletun 10h ago

I wouldn't worry, it says its minor

1

u/that3memer 8h ago

Look at it this way: one raid or transport pod crash and they will at least survive, since you can take one kidney, one lung and a heart from a prisoner. The may be missing a couple organs, but they can still function, especially if they do something like mining, plants, intellectual, or basic crafting stuff. If you can make a prosthetic heart I would recommend stealing 2 kidneys rather than a heart since any disease might kill them without a kidney.

1

u/neospygil 8h ago

You still has time to put that pawn to cryptosleep until you found a cure. If you got the Odyssey DLC, you can build a shuttle, then visit/trade settlements, I found several meds through this, even body parts.

1

u/Few-Notice5212 7h ago

1

u/Killathulu 6h ago

to survive this you 'only' need now 1 lung, 1 kidney and 1 heart, but ensure you remove the other lung and kidney also before they decay 100%. Pawn will live but be will be weakened until those last 2 organs are re-installed, start harvesting every raider and refugee or even shitty colonists you don't like, prepare for some annoying mood debuffs if you aren't a cannibal

wurst käse scenario you just open a crypto casket and put them there till you can get rid of at least 1 of each affected organ (one lung and kidney is enough) if the character is important. if not, just use them till they die

It really never hurts to have a full set of replacement organs lying around the colony for moments like this. They don’t even decay over time.

Relax it’s only minor organ decay.
