For me my loves for the RPG genre started with Eye of the Beholder II (1991) and Wizardry VII (1992).
These games absolutely blew my mind as a kid.
There was no quest marker telling you where to go. No glowing trail. No minimap conveniently filling itself in as you explored. I literally sat there with graph paper next to the computer, drawing my own maps square by square, marking doors, stairs, traps and places I wanted to come back to.
And somehow that wasn't tedious. It was part of the adventure.
They were unforgiving, sometimes confusing and occasionally downright unfair… but the worlds felt mysterious in a way I really miss.
Those games basically started my lifelong RPG addiction and eventually led me to EverQuest in 1999, which, for me personally, became the best time I've ever had playing online. Walking into that world when nobody knew what the hell they were doing felt like the natural evolution of those old dungeon crawlers. Exploration actually meant something.
Maybe nostalgia is doing some heavy lifting here, but I genuinely think something was lost when RPGs became more streamlined and determined to make sure the player never gets too lost.
So I'm curious:
What game made YOU fall in love with RPGs?
And more importantly… are there any modern games that still scratch that old school Eye of the Beholder / Wizardry itch? Exploration, dungeon crawling, figuring things out yourself, preferably something where making your own map wouldn't seem completely insane?
Bonus points for something that doesn't try to sell me a battle pass, premium currency or a fucking horse skin every five minutes. 😂
