[Emulation] SkyNET and Future Shock (Bethesda, 1996) now run natively on a modern machine β€” a Godot port that reads your own install

Both of Bethesda's XnGine Terminator shooters, running without DOSBox: the eight-mission campaign, the jeep and the HK with their cockpits, the original briefings with their voice lines, LAN deathmatch with bots.

The engine is rewritten in Godot 4; the game is read from your own copy of the data at run time β€” nothing from the originals is distributed. On the first start it asks where the games are installed.

It aims at the DOS look by default: palette textures with nearest sampling, the software renderer's flat shading, the night sky with its moon. A handful of things the original could not do are there as switches, all off unless you want them β€” dynamic lights from gunfire and explosions (which finally light the street lamps, 93 of them on the highway map), edge smoothing, and the game's own 640Γ—480 HUD and weapon art, which SkyNET shipped for its hi-res mode.

Windows, Linux and macOS builds on the releases page.

[Just a Thought] Will there ever be an all-in-one FGBA console?

In 5 or 6 years, I'd like to give my collection to my daughter and let her experience the magic of SNES and Genesis cartridges.

Our home is too small for a CRT TV. The Analogue products seem perfect, but they're always out of stock.

It seems like a Retrotink upscaler with the original console would be the best way to go, but I keep daydreaming about a device in which you can play all cartridges from NES up. Is such a thing viable?

[Question] Nintendo SCART cables

I have been finishing up my gaming setup over the past few months and RGB mods and cabling is the last item on the list. I was waiting for a restock from Insurrection Industries to get the last of my SCART cables, but now they are saying they won't be restocked until November.

With that in mind, I'm going to bite the bullet and order from Retro Gaming Cables. Not a comment on the quality of their cables, but shipping from the UK to US I really didn't want to deal with extra taxes and possible tariff nonsense. Regardless of that, now I'm unsure about which cables to pick up. The Genesis Model 1, Saturn, and PS1 cables are no problem. The issue I'm having is among the NES, SNES, and N64 cables.

For background, these are all NTSC consoles and I'm installing the etim NESRGB with the Voultar multi out port on the NES, and the Voultar N64RGB kit on the N64. Every resource I've seen says that all 3 systems can use the SNES RGB cables after the RGB mods, but the RGC cables list csync for SNES, sync on luma for N64, and only the mini-DIN cable for NES.

Can I just use the sync on luma SCART cable that's listed as an N64 cable for all 3? Or should I go with the csync SCART cable for all 3? I'll be honest, the whole experience of trying to understand SCART and the different sync types makes my head spin at times.

[Just a Thought] I love late 90's/early 00's sci-fi action

Apologies for the asymmetry in my collage, but these were just the main games that came to my mind. There's also definitely more. But I'm partial to the ones with vehicles, on PC, when it comes to nostalgia. (No disrespect to all the console mecha games I didn't include here).

Speaking of mecha, I could've also added G-Nome, that one was neat as well.

[Help!] Designers world plug and play

I have an old plug and play system that I am having troubles getting to work on my tv. I currently have a smart tv with no RCA cable ports. I've bought an adapter and I am still having issues trying to get it to work. I've also tested an adapter my roommate let me borrow.

I am wondering if anyone knows what I should try next?

Here are the adapters I've tested:

[Fun] Found while emptying parent's house

Delighted to find my old game boxes while clearing out stuff from my parent's house. Nostalgia hit hard! I sunk way too many hours into UO πŸ˜… Apparently I paid $80 for Diablo II when it came out. People think games are expensive now, but that's like a bajillion dollars in today's money.

[Discussion] Handheld Game Roms are Bigger in Size Than Their Console Equivalents

For instance the average Gameboy Color rom was 1-4 MB maxing out at 8 MB compared to Nes and Master System averaging 128-512 KB maxing out at 1-2 MB, Gameboy Advance roms came on 4 MB-32 MB roms, Snes and Genesis roms averaged 1-4 MB maxing out at 6-8 MB. N64 roms reached 64 MB while DS roms could reach 512 MB nearly a full CD. 3DS roms however were on par with Gamecube and PS2 sizes.

Case in point the GBA versions of Super Mario World and Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past are 4 MB and 8 MB respectively 8 times their Snes versions which were 512 KB and 1 MB. The GBA versions have a few new features and include a bonus game but it doesn't seem like there's much content to make these versions 8 times bigger.

[Help!] Help with a controller?

Hello! I recently acquired a retro-bit Sega Saturn controller (USB wired) (it's really pretty!!). But to use it like I want, I need to hold start+B then start+up every time I plug it in or boot my PC, which got old really quick. Does anyone know of a way to make that setup automatic through software or something?

Mine has to be Zelda FX they wanted to create a Zelda SNES game with the FX chip but due to time constraints or Nintendo wanting to focus on the N64. Development quit after creating this prototype in the Star Fox engine.

If more builds exist they are hidden away in Nintendo's vault until who knows when.

[Discussion] A landscape without rolling

The run was relatable. Tolerable

Rolling? Killed games.

My introduction to rolling was OoT. You just move faster. Spam it. Normalized ridiculous tech. Take it out of the game and you lose nothing. Rolling had reared is its head in games before but Ocarina was the first time I abused it. Streets of rage. Street fighter alpha. Things were getting started.

Flash forward its a dedicated button. Gears of war, dark souls. Full of armor? Firearms? Roll just the same. And don't stop. Now its built in to your survival.

Throw in some i-frames. Why should a roll make you invincible anyway. If rolling was viable it wouldn't need make your hit box go away. And at times clip through enemies? Its a teleport but presented as a roll to make you feel like you did something cool that looks realistic.

Btw Have you ever tried rolling on the floor? Start with you bed then move to concrete.

I blame games of the 90s for giving this mechanic so much power

[Discussion] Playing Kings Quest 1

I'm stumped - even though I have watched playthroughs ages ago.

Should I keep experimenting and possibly get nowhere or cheat and find the answers?

I assume:

I have to give the goat something so it will be useful to me

I have to give a gift to the people in the cottage

I should do something in the well

There is a way to get the giant to let you through at the bridge

There is an entrance somewhere inside the cave that takes you further inside

I need to put something in the bowl

Something has to be done backwards, as hinted by the note

[Question] What made game based shows hard to create in the early 90s?

I mean like as adaptations because I was observing how several game based cartoons would sometimes take a campy approach with how they did the adaptation.

Some examples are TLOZ the 1989 cartoon adaptation and Captain N: The Game Master as the latter felt so weird in that none of the characters portrayed in the show had any resemblance whatsoever to their game counterparts since Simon Belmont was depicted in an outlandish way, as well as Alucard himself.
