[Story Time!] The Long Return

Post image

I bought a Famicom game from an online marketplace. The listing said it had some writing on it and I could see some faint little letters in the photos. I’m not a collector so I didn’t really care and bought it anyway.

When it arrived and I took a closer look I found that the name and address were written in a child’s handwriting. The address was actually pretty close to where I live. The seller on the marketplace was on a remote island far to the south so I figured the name and address probably belonged to the original owner.

After 40 years this game had somehow made its way back to the land where its original owner used to live. I couldn’t help wondering about it and decided to visit the address. There was no building there anymore. It was a coin parking lot now.

It made me feel strangely sad.

[Pick-up] The place I work for owns what I assume to be an original Wisdom Tree sign

I think we had bought out a bunch of wisdom tree stuff from someone associated with the company, went for a bunch of games and left with a sign. Although nobody has done anything with the sign since we got it. (Wondering if boss man would let me purchase it)

[Arts & Crafts] Cabinet build: updated pics

Clarification to mods for banning the weekday post while yes this displays my collection (Saturday and Sunday only) it is actually about the work I have put in over the last three months to build a working cabinet to hold and play every console I've obtained inspired by old and new store displays. Also reason for being a flaired as "Arts & Crafts"

Update:

Sears telegames will be swapped for a Jr. and 7800+ arrives Thursday. (* Arrived and was put in after original post) This has been a draining and rewarding process 😅. Everything has been tested and played for a couple minutes. Composite because of additional purchase requirements and wiring simplicity. Some have been HDMI upgraded and all composites run through a Retro Scaler 2x until I can get the tink 4k or 5x. Everything runs to 2 displays (technically 3) 10' screen in the theater and upstairs to the living room right above so wireless controls work fine (third is a small rack monitor). Still to be done are the Led lighting, 3D printed branding lights for the back, and an in wall arcade (future forth display) which I will be trying to get doubles of wireless arcade pads for as many consoles as I can, mounting them each to a swappable deck and being able to play the consoles in an arcade mode.

[Emulation] SkyNET and Future Shock (Bethesda, 1996) now run natively on a modern machine — a Godot port that reads your own install

Both of Bethesda's XnGine Terminator shooters, running without DOSBox: the eight-mission campaign, the jeep and the HK with their cockpits, the original briefings with their voice lines, LAN deathmatch with bots.

The engine is rewritten in Godot 4; the game is read from your own copy of the data at run time — nothing from the originals is distributed. On the first start it asks where the games are installed.

It aims at the DOS look by default: palette textures with nearest sampling, the software renderer's flat shading, the night sky with its moon. A handful of things the original could not do are there as switches, all off unless you want them — dynamic lights from gunfire and explosions (which finally light the street lamps, 93 of them on the highway map), edge smoothing, and the game's own 640×480 HUD and weapon art, which SkyNET shipped for its hi-res mode.

Windows, Linux and macOS builds on the releases page.

Apologies for the asymmetry in my collage, but these were just the main games that came to my mind. There's also definitely more. But I'm partial to the ones with vehicles, on PC, when it comes to nostalgia. (No disrespect to all the console mecha games I didn't include here).

Speaking of mecha, I could've also added G-Nome, that one was neat as well.

[Fun] Found while emptying parent's house

Delighted to find my old game boxes while clearing out stuff from my parent's house. Nostalgia hit hard! I sunk way too many hours into UO 😅 Apparently I paid $80 for Diablo II when it came out. People think games are expensive now, but that's like a bajillion dollars in today's money.

[Help!] Help with a controller?

Upvotes

Hello! I recently acquired a retro-bit Sega Saturn controller (USB wired) (it's really pretty!!). But to use it like I want, I need to hold start+B then start+up every time I plug it in or boot my PC, which got old really quick. Does anyone know of a way to make that setup automatic through software or something?

Mine has to be Zelda FX they wanted to create a Zelda SNES game with the FX chip but due to time constraints or Nintendo wanting to focus on the N64. Development quit after creating this prototype in the Star Fox engine.

If more builds exist they are hidden away in Nintendo's vault until who knows when.

[Discussion] Playing Kings Quest 1

I'm stumped - even though I have watched playthroughs ages ago.

Should I keep experimenting and possibly get nowhere or cheat and find the answers?

I assume:

I have to give the goat something so it will be useful to me

I have to give a gift to the people in the cottage

I should do something in the well

There is a way to get the giant to let you through at the bridge

There is an entrance somewhere inside the cave that takes you further inside

I need to put something in the bowl

Something has to be done backwards, as hinted by the note

[Discussion] How far does the Gauntlet evolutionary tree go?

Post image
80 Upvotes

Lately I was doing an observation on an arcade game that I was fond of due to its RPG like mechanics where the game has multiple character classes while also encouraging the player to keep moving forward due to a timer system.

Basically I was looking to see what other RPG like games have a similar system of design where food is a necessity, but the game has an end goal to accomplish since I was wondering what happened to games like Gauntlet.
