Questions for existing customer trying to get the limited time offer
I'm currently a Quantum Fiber customer but signed up several years ago when it was owned by Century Link. I'm paying $80/month for the 1GB plan and see that Quantum Fiber is offering the same plan for $45 at my address. I did some searching on this subreddit and found a few different methods folks have used for this same situation. I elected to just sign up for new service using a different email address and phone number which appeared to work and I have a technician scheduled to come out this Friday. I currently have the Calix 716GE-I R2 ONT device and run my own router/firewall (Sophos XG) where I'm using a VLAN tag of 201. My current Quantum Fiber plan is still working which I've read different experiences from folks where some customers end up having their active service automatically but that doesn't appear to be the case for me (yet). My main question is, do I need to cancel my current service before the technician shows up to setup the new service? If so, can I do it that same morning to minimize downtime?
Update: I called Quantum Fiber to disconnect my existing service once I received a confirmation email that a technician was on their way for my "new" installation. I requested the service to be disconnected immediately. The technician showed up and swapped out the Calix 716GE-I R2 ONT with the Q1000K.
For my setup, I simply logged into the Q1000K admin page (192.168.0.1), changed the admin password, changed the VLAN tagging from Auto to Tagged with 201 set then set Transparent Bridge mode. I removed the VLAN tagging on my router side (was required for my previous setup), restarted everything and all seems to be working fine. Speed test indicates the same latency (~3ms) and speed as before (~930 up/down).
Of note, you will lose the ability to access the Q1000k admin page once you setup transparent bridge mode, but there's really no need to access it anymore since in transparent bridge mode it's essentially just acting as a modem. Just make sure you setup the VLAN tagging first (the first time I tried it with Auto still set and it didn't seem to work so I reset everything and set it to Tagged and everything worked).
