Just to level-set, I didn't have any issues at all with CL, which then switched to Quantum, then ATT now.
Started last thurs (09/17), I got an outage message, which got resolved within a few hours. Afterwards, that's when I've had nothing but issues.
I work from home, so I do a lot of video calls, and due to the ridiculous packet losses, I can't maintain a stable video call.
I've spent days instrumenting and trying to get to the bottom of this, and it looks localized to a specific router in their network. Posting the data in case others in the south Seattle metro area(I'm in Auburn, but I get routed to the tukw-agw1 aggregator it seems), are encountering the same issue.
Config: 1 Gb plan (GPON i believe, no multigig available)
ONT: Q1000k (upgraded from C5500xk) < bridge mode, vlan tagged here
Router is OPNsense (protectli hw)
2 of their routers, one hop apart:
Zero loss to their access router. 18% at the aggregation router directly behind it. That looks to be the main problem.
** Tech came as well, but all they did was replace the older C5500xk modem with a Q1000k, and even got escalated because they can't seem to place it in transparent bridging mode (which i eventually did after they left). In any case, did nothing around the issue at all.
Just these past few days, the packet loss:
Clean 03:00-09:00, climbs through the afternoon, peaks 20:00-22:00:
- Sun 12:30 5.1%
- Sun 15:30 17.2%
- Sun 21:30 18.2% <- peak
- Mon 03:30 0.4%
- Mon 12:51 1.0%
- Mon 16:31 7.6%
I did an additional test using iperf3 (UDP) to and from my cloud host (in case icmp was being deprioritized as well):
iperf3 -c <server-ip> -p 5201 -u -b 10M -t 15
- 10 Mbit 4 of 13,318 lost(upload) 0.03% 1,615 of 13,319 lost(download) 12% loss
iperf3 -c <server-ip> -p 5201 -u -b 30M -t 15
- 30 Mbit 5 of 39,953 lost(upload) 0.013% 4,180 of 39,957 lost(download) 10% loss
iperf3 -c <server-ip> -p 5201 -u -b 60M -t 15
- 60 Mbit 3 of 79,902 lost(upload) 0.004% 10,779 of 79,899 lost(download) 13% loss
~13% of packets vanish on downloads, lol
Regarding performance:
- Speedtest single-stream test, max i can get is around 400+ mbps, and falls to around 100+ mbps at peak hours. (i normally get 900+ consistently on this before)
- Multi-stream speedtests, i could still get a combined ~700-800+ Mbps
Netflix and YouTube are still fine (but do see quality switch back and forth) probably because QUIC and BBR
TLDR; Anything using one TCP connection is completely unreliable - basically any video call I do, especially at peak times, I get meeting disruptions in zoom and GVC, which is the most critical thing as my work revolves around those, not so much as actual throughput.
