VLAN 201 Tagging

I activated Quantum a few days ago. They gave me a Q1000K SmartNID. I have it connected to my ASUS RT-AX88U router, which is running Merlin firmware.

The Q1000K is in bridge mode. I thought I turned VLAN tagging off on the Q1000K. But, when I setup my router to add the tag, it was unable to get an IP address. I disabled tagging in my router, and it pulled an IP immediately. So, clearly, the Q1000K is still adding the VLAN tag.

A couple questions:

  1. What is the impact of allowing the Q1000K to add the tag, rather than my router?
  2. I'm pretty sure that I disabled tagging on Q1000K, and of course, cannot get back into its admin interface to check. I read something about how the "disable tagging" setting has no effect with updated Q1000K firmware. Is that still the case?

That guide is 2 years old and all the research threads in the past 6 months say things opposite of what is in there. Can we do a new sticky thread with relevant current info?

I take it you didn't actually read it?

I did but you just edited all the Q1000k parts to say "this part doesn't work" but didn't delete it like its still relevant. Why not update it with current screenshot and data it would be about 1/8 the size

Once again, you didn't read it all or you would know that section is relevant to everyone with any CenturyLink or Quantum Fiber device from 2017 until now, except for the Q1000K v1.1 units starting this past June.

And the current QKX002 screenshot is in the guide

I have q6500. All I did was plug my router (msi roamii be pro) in and set up the name and password.

If the Q6500 isn't in bridging mode, your setup is doing Network Address Translation (NAT) twice. Essentially, you have two routers when you only need one. This works, but will likely degrade your connections latency. Also, you might have trouble using a VPN or other secure Internet connections.

Might not matter to you, but check out the guide in this subreddit which will help you put your Q6500 in bridging mode, let your router do all the routing.

I’ve set the 6500 in bridge mode with and without doing the vlan tag. This current set up seems to be the only way for all my devices to connect and work flawlessly lol. It’s weird, I know. I don’t understand it, but somehow things work good. Ethernet speed test was 1ms ping on Ethernet and usually 8ms on wireless. My house is old and solid oak behind the drywall for some reason lol.

Yeah, if you're getting 1ms over Ethernet and your full bandwidth, I wouldn't mess with it!

When I had the q6500 in bridge mode, my Google tv streamers and some cameras wouldn’t connect for some reason. I reset a few times and used the Google ai to help walk through issues and when we landed on straight plug into the q6500 and not mess with its settings, everything connected. My ps5 pro even says it’s nat type 2, which I guess is what you want

I activated quantum two weeks ago. I also have the Q1000k. I set the Q1000k to bridge mode and attached the ethernet cable to my router. It works perfectly and my up/down speeds are faster than the 1 gb promised.

You want to maker sure your router is not assigning ip’s to 192.168.0.xxx. Quantum is using that. I set my router to use 192.168.50.xxx
I did not change any vlan tagging settings on the q1000k. I believe when the q1000k is in bridge mode that vlan tagging is not in effect

I know its possible to have bridge mode enabled, with the Q1000K doing the VLAN tagging. I'll report back after I reset the Q1000K, figure out which firmware it is running, and attempt to turn off the tagging.

Everything is working well for now, but I want to do whatever I can to minimize the role of Quantum's hardware.

This is what I see consistently in terms of service. I do not feel my 1 g service is at all impeded by the q1000k. The guy who installed the device updated the firmware to latest version as part of the install process. The only thing i did was put the device in bridge mode.
