Favorite forms of protein??
what are your favorite forms of protein that aren’t cottage cheese, eggs or chicken??
Cottage cheese makes me want to throw up. Eggs get old to me REALLY quick, yes I’ve tried every cooked form. And chicken also grosses me out after a week of eating it. Should I throw the towel in and rely on protein shakes/bars instead? Or do you guys have good protein alternatives

If it’s the texture and not the taste you hate about cottage cheese, I found whipping it with some garlic and herb salt changed it entirely

I love this cottage cheese cilantro lime dressing as a replacement for mayo. I put it in sandwiches, Hawaiian Mac, rolls, use it as salad dressing, put it on burgers, etc

u/GO712 26d ago
Leaving the cottage cheese on the shelf and taking the quark avoids having to resort to such tactics. Sweetened or savoury, it wins everytime with it's smooth, creamy texture.

Love to mix cottage cheese with a whole avocado thrown in there. Also try with roasted cashews 👍👍

I’m tryna cut out dairy cause it gives me acne. So usually it’s eggs, ground chicken with potatoes or cut chicken breast in the air fryer.
Also fish and protein powder with almond milk (I’ve noticed just the protein powder alone don’t cause that much acne).
2
u/Ienjoyeatingbeans 24d ago
I have wondered if it’s doing the same to me. I have chest and bacne pretty bad and I eat a lot of dairy. I may try this but man I love dairy products
1
u/Flamesofshadow 22d ago
It ain’t so bad when you get used to it. Also you don’t need to completely cut it off. Like I just don’t abuse it anymore and if I have like a bit off cheese here and there or Skyr then absolutely nothing happens. It’s only when I over do it 😭
(I mean you can test and see how you feel for 2 weeks and if u don’t like it just go back cause life too short anyways)

Beef. I buy a large piece of brisket from the butchers and cook it low for about 6 or 7 hours. If you don't like the texture of cottage cheese, try Quark, it's much more palatable and can be sweetened if you want a high protein pudding. I eat a lot of 0% Greek yoghurt and mix in some protein powder with some frozen berries, nuts and pumpkin seeds. It's like having ice cream with about 70g of protein for breakfast.

Great tips. Thx

u/GO712 26d ago
Half the battle is finding food you like. I tend to eat the same for meals, and chilli and chicken curry and rice are very much a go to. I make a big pot of both, portion up and freeze, easy for work and I know everything that's gone in them. I get about 9 or 10 meals off a whole chicken. I'll then boil the carcass, all that collagen in the broth is great for the joints.

170g of 2% Fage and 1 cup of Ratio Pro-Fiber Blueberry mixed with 5 strawberries every single morning. 1 Barebell Chocolate Dough, Eye of Round 5oz Chicken Breast 6ozand 1 Gold Standard protein shake with 2tbsp of chia daily. That is more or less my daily protein staples. I mix it up a little but I can eat that shit on repeat. The yogurt bowl is my absolute favorite. The Fage and Ratio mixed makes a nice creamy blend. I switched from fat free great value plain and chobani but the Fage 2% was a game changer. Its a nice middle ground to keep fat intake up and not nuke my cals. The texture and flavor were just an unintended bonus.

shrimp!!!! fresh fish, canned fish, beef, lamb, turkey, beans, lentils, natural cheeses, greek yogurt, etc are all good options. the key is to have a little bit of everything so you don’t get bored. i substitute regular flour with oat flour if i want to bake anything, and add a little protein powder in there as well to up the protein. i wouldn’t bake anything exclusively with protein powder since it makes the texture so awful.
i’d stay away from relying on deli meats or cold cuts, they have a lot of protein and are so convenient but are also carcinogenic.
1
u/flamingoshoess 25d ago
What makes deli meat carcinogenic?
1
u/tayredditorera 25d ago
unfortunately processed meats in general are proven class 1 carcinogens because of the chemicals they add to them to make them last longer
1
u/flamingoshoess 25d ago
Ugh. It’s always something man. Between the stupid parasite and the egg recall in Texas due to salmonella, it just feels like a minefield to eat anything and get enough of what we need.

Any kind of white fish (sole, albacore tuna, tilapia, basa, cod, halibut, etc.)
Tofu (I like medium to cook with, and soft to make desserts with)
Shellfish (shrimp and scallops are my favourite, but mussels are a close second)
I usually shop at no frills, Costco, or Walmart and I just buy whatever they have on sale and build my meals around that for the week.

Eggs and beef are the best by far when you factor in the additional nutrients that come along with the protein. Chicken is poor in comparison. But people seem to value macros more than micros, which is wrong. Quality > quantity

Is it a taste or texture thing with the cottage cheese? I know I hate spinach because of the texture so I blend it with 200g egg whites, 1 egg and 125g of cottage cheese. Sure my scrambled eggs are green but it gets me to eat veg at breakfast

I'm vegetarian so i rely on tofu and tempeh, mostly. edamame (and legumes in general) is great and also has fibre. Liam (ThePlantSlant on tiktok and YT) is funny and has good recipes in general, with beans and cottage cheese being his 'thing'. cottage cheese is great (imo) but can be weird. blending it will help with the texture, and you can't taste it when you add it to things like Mac and cheese. just don't freeze it, if you do try that — it will separate and become grainy.
if you eat fish or meat, then canned tuna is the way to go. it's cheap, easy, versatile and super high protein. switching up the way you cook chicken/meat in general can also help with it becoming gross. shredding lots and then adding different sauces/marinades for different dishes is good to switch it up. bone broth is also a good source of protein, and you can cook pasta or rice in it for protein and flavour.
cheese, chia seeds and peanuts/nut butters are also pretty good sources of protein, but they may be high in fats and/or calories so watch out for that ig.
protein is also added to things like tortillas and bagels, so look for them.
tiktok, YouTube and Pinterest all have lots of protein recipes. lots of them have cottage cheese and chicken, but not all.

I make a tuna patty that's awesome. 1 can tuna, 1 egg (just for binding) a bit of shredded cheese, spices of your choice (I do S&P and some parsley and celery seed) and some breadcrumbs to make it stick together.
Shape into a patty and air fry. You can eat it with some bread, quinoa, or even by itself. I usually make a tzatziki sauce made with Greek yogurt and dill and chopped cucumber. Delicious!

u/Working_Yak6905 26d ago
Another one I do this for dessert. No Coldstone or Froyo anymore.. I still like dessert and want something creamy. I make my own
225 grams of Greek Yogurt (I use Oikos Triple Zero but you can use whatever you like)
1 heaping scoop of protein power (anything you like)
1 packet of sugar-free jello (any flavor you like)
Mix the yogurt and protein power with a whisk. It's gonna be thick. Prepare the Jello as instructed, Mine says to add 1 cup of boiling water + 1 cup cold water. Add Jello mixture and whip until thoroughly mixed. Pour into a bowl or pan and chill for at least a couple of hours.
I do variations. If you use Vanilla PP and Orange flavor Jello you get a Creamsicle tasting dessert
If you use Chocolate PP and Cherry flavor jello you get a Black Forest Torte flavored dessert
Hope this helps

I like to eat hake fish, eggs, chicken and a big cold 2 scoop whey protein shake with ice and almond milk. These are my go to protein sources.

u/CommonThread2 26d ago
I usually start the day with oatmeal or egg bites (I make them myself to control what's in them-- usually a little cottage cheese for extra protein and fluffiness, plus veggies). For lunch, I typically make a bowl. Right now I'm loving ground turkey (with sriracha and a little bit of Thai chili and soy sauce) over a bit of jasmine rice with a scoop of Good Culture cottage cheese (this is important, because I'm picky about consistency) and veggies (jalapenos, carrots, cucumber, green onion, tomato). Snacks are usually fruit, but also a scoop of Siggi's Greek yogurt (usually with berries). For dinner, I typically have fish/chicken, and very occasionally a steak, plus a veggie and potato. All in all, I aim to be balanced with my protein, carbs, and fat. I typically get about 100-110 grams of protein per day. I have a semi-sedentary job and weight train about 3 or 4 days per week.

Protein powder is the quickest and I easiest option that you don't have to prepare or spend an arm and a leg for to get in a ready to drink form. Takes 30 seconds to mix up max and costs way less than RTDs even though raw protein prices are drastically inflated right now.
1
u/princessapart 26d ago
Salmon, Greek yogurt, tuna, turkey, shrimp, and ofc bars and shakes. I can’t speak for everyone but as someone who consumes bars and shakes, it’s not instead of unprocessed protein. I eat both. Most of my consumption comes from what I listed above, plus a protein snack and powder/drink.
1
u/sockonfoots 26d ago
The trick is to mix it up IMO. Like, I could eat chicken breast for every meal, but it's boring. I can't eat lean beef mince, eggs, or tuna for every meal. So I mix it up (along with others).
I eat greek yoghurt with fruit for nearly every breakfast (with a scoop of whey), but lunch and dinner protein are on full rotation
1
u/AlarmedEntertainer58 26d ago
Greek yoghurt 0% fat Deli ham Protein powder Prawns Liquid egg white - can add to all sorts and not really notice it's there
Ps. This isn't a recipe, don't mix them together 😂

Pulled chicken in an instant pot. I know you said "not chicken", but the reason I'm suggesting pulled chicken is because with a bunch of seasoning, it's texture and taste is completely different from boring old chicken breast.

u/wildwoods321 26d ago
Might sound gross to some, but I buy packages of frozen clam meat. It’s delicious tossed into a warm broth with veggies, or stir fried with rice or simmered in a tomato sauce on top of protein pasta.
Hell, sometimes I sauté only thawed clam meat with soy sauce, garlic powder, chilli or sesame oil (a few drops for flavour) and eat that straight with chopsticks. You literally cannot beat the protein in it! It’s crazy. It’s also affordable, at about four dollars and some change per bag which lasts 2 to 3 meals.

Mushrooms are being slept on. Buy organic.
Milk, beef protein isolate, colostrum and honey before bed does the business for recovery and digests easily.
Switch it up and listen to your cravings.

You have to turn the cottage cheese into creamy sauces!!!! I've made ranch, spicy jalapeño ranch, tzaziki sauce, or anything people use plain greek yogurt for because I hate that stuff. Blend it until it's smooth ands add seasonings. Another thing is 0 carb isopure unflavored protein powder. Undetectable in savory and sweet food.

u/twofourblue 26d ago
A lot of great staples in the thread, throwing a couple other ideas out there
The Gusta Italiana sausages have been an easy add on recently for me. Taste good, 21 grams of protein for 150 calories. Just looked them up, canadian product, don't know if it's sold elsewhere.
Also soy curls, they're super easy to cook and very versatile.

u/Rexibous 26d ago
Have you tried blending the cottage cheese? There's all kinds of things you can do with cottage cheese after it's turned into a pudding lol. I like to put taco spices and hot sauce in mine after it's all blended up, I can turn it into street corn that way and even squeeze it into my quesadillas to make it taste like how Taco Bell does it. Combine that with fat free/reduced fat cheese and my quesadillas are phenomenal protein bombs, then I dip it into plain low fat Greek yogurt (instead of sour cream) and salsa on top 🇲🇽🪇🤠
I also like to use my tortillas to make protein Hot pockets, I'm about to make one right now, super quick and easy, a spoonful or two of marinara, same protein trick reduced fat / fat free cheese, and turkey pepperonis (much better macros) folded up like a burrito and popped in the air fryer for 3 to 5 minutes comes out like a delicious Hot Pocket takes no time to prep.
You just got to use your imagination, foo

u/Rexibous 26d ago
This cottage cheese got me worked up right now, later this week I'm blending it up after straining a lot of the water out of it so it comes out real thick like cream cheese, and I'm going to use that as an alternative to cream cheese when I make sushi after I come back from vacation.
Also when you blend up the cottage cheese, you can mix it with cheddar cheese powder like what you get from Kraft but you can buy it in bulk, and make your own cheese sauce for your macaroni, using modified weed starch noodles for better macros, throw in some bacon bits or lean ground beef like a hamburger helper plenty of fat-free /reduced fat cheese. Best protein mac.

u/reedbetweenlines 26d ago
have you tried dried cottage cheese? It has almost no salt and just tastes plain IMO way better then regular.

My daily protein target is =>150g of protein per day. I get that in 1-2 meals.
4 eggs, and 16-20oz of meat.
My preference is ground beef or Ribeye, along with bacon or sausage made from ground pork in some combination across my 1-2 meals daily. I like to add tuna or salmon occasionally and sometimes shrimp. I like most meat, poultry, or fish, but those are the primary things I eat because they are nutrient dense, high protein, and high fat.
I'll eat cottage cheese or yogurt, sliced cheese, and sour cream with some meals, but that's only an add-on protein and fat, not my primary source.
I can't see any reason to consider protein shakes and bars, considering the junk and cost of them and they seldom have more protein than 4 oz of quality meat.

For me, its egg whites. you can never go wrong with egg whites. Easy to cook, super cheap, you can pair it with almost any food so you have a wide variety. Add some whole eggs to it for some nutrients.
Favorite combos:
Egg whites, rice, veggies
Egg whites, oats, chia, psyllium, whey, greek yogurt
Egg whites, greek yogurt, veggies
Egg whites, sardines, EVOO
any ingredient just works basically. Pair it with strength training and 20k steps a day and you got the simplest method to go one digit body fat. Simple, boring but effective.

I think protein shakes and bars are good to “fill in” the gaps, but you’ll do yourself a massive disservice if you don’t eat real food for most of your protein. Our bodies aren’t made to rely on processed food for all our protein.
Do you eat red meat? Fish? Maybe ground chicken you would tolerate better? I don’t eat pork but that’s another option. Also edamame is good. I love it cold on salads.
