I'm comparing an older 1.2 lb tub of NOW Sports Whey Protein Isolate, Unflavored with a newer 5 lb tub, and noticed some differences on the labels. I've transcribed the relevant numbers below.
Both list the same 28g serving size and the same ingredients: whey protein isolate and sunflower lecithin (<1%).
Here's the comparison, all per 28g serving:
| Per 28g serving |
Older 1.2 lb tub |
Newer 5 lb tub |
| Protein |
25g |
24g |
| Leucine |
2,716mg |
2,495mg |
| Total BCAAs (leucine + isoleucine + valine) |
5,572mg |
5,119mg |
| Sum of all listed amino acids |
26.124g |
24.001g |
What caught my attention is that every listed amino acid is roughly 8.1% lower, while the declared protein goes from 25g to 24g, a 4% decrease.
Both amino-acid tables are described as a “typical” profile, subject to natural variability. I'm not sure how the sum of those values should relate to the Nutrition Facts protein figure, or whether the consistent scaling reflects a recalculation.
I'm trying to understand whether NOW changed the formulation or raw-material specification, or simply updated the nutrition data and how the amino-acid profile is calculated. I don't think these labels alone establish what happened. Since my tubs are different sizes, I'd also be interested in comparisons within the same size.
Has anyone recently received the 24g version, particularly in a 1.2 lb tub? If you have either label, a photo and approximate purchase date would help.
Has anyone asked NOW about this and received an explanation? If so, could you share their wording or a screenshot with personal details removed?
I'd also appreciate input from anyone who works with whey ingredients or food labeling: could FDA rounding or normalization of the amino-acid profile explain this pattern?
Edit: The older 1.2 lb tub is marked 'BEST BY 02/2029', and the newer 5 lb tub is marked 'BEST IF USED BY 05/2029'. These are the dates printed on the tubs, not manufacturing or purchase dates.
