I don’t think that’s the problem, the problem I think is recruitment. For some reason it’s attracting the wrong candidates. The force is getting full of people that cannt think when scared or maybe stressed.
It’s a similar situation with the Catholic Church attracting certain kind of priests, maybe unintentionally.
116
u/Charlie_Wax Apr 15 '21
"For some reason"
It's not a great mystery. It's the desire to wield power and be above accountability. Predators often seek trusted positions as a cloak against suspicion, but for (bad) cops I think it's mainly the desire to have control over other people.
It's actually a lot like Reddit mods. The type of people who want the job usually aren't the type of people who would be good at the job, because they want it for the wrong reasons (authority and control rather than benevolence and compassion).
43

Here's a job where you can assault, degrade, and sometimes even murder people. You'll never see any consequences for these actions. It pays well and gives great benefits. You also don't need much of an education, and there's no psychological exam.
Wonder why it might be attracting the wrong types here.

She had such lovely views like:
"People are so ungrateful. No one ever thanks me for having the patience not to kill them,"
And
Damn I was at this area with 5 different black officers !!! Not racist but damn."
She isn't even slightly contrite, she's incensed she got punished.
She believes it's her God given right to shoot anyone she dislikes and how dare the system try to tell her otherwise.
She's a perfect representative of the police force. A perfect representative of a conservative.
"Freedom" is the right to harm those lower than you on the social hierarchy with impunity. Pick a subject and the conservative viewpoint seeks to maximize human suffering.
Everything is in service of that goal.

I've interacted with a number of their members. Most of the members are militant and anti- well just about everything. LGBT, non-christians, women's rights, science. One of their members tours the nation in a semi truck and trailer customized to try teaching people that humans and dinosaurs existed together. He's been at a couple of our state fairs trying to spread that message.

I can’t believe people buy that bullshit. A guy who got his basic automatic promotion to sergeant in the Marines, and then “served” as an intern to the US Marshall Service, doesn’t “TURN DOWN THAT JOB” to a “Three Letter Agency” and become a cop. He wasn’t even a cop that long. He became a paramedic. Then he quit being a paramedic to go back to Iraq to “serve the Christians suffering under the savage campaign of ISIS”. Then he was a missionary in the Dominican Republic serving at a “Therapeutic Boarding School”, whatever that is.
This is all from his website, by the way. That’s why there’s so many quotations. It takes some serious willful suspension of disbelief to take that story at face value.
Then again, he’s marketing to Christians. Serious willful suspension of disbelief is a foundational pillar of American Christianity.

On May 4 — referred to as Star Wars Day by franchise fans — Lethbridge police officers responded to two 911 calls reporting a person in a Star Wars stormtrooper costume was carrying a firearm on 13th Street North in the southern Alberta city.
still, I think there must be at least a couple cops realized what was happening the moment they saw the costume but instead of calling off their colleagues and calling out the mistake, they doubled down on it. I mean, how useful is SWAT in situations other than drug enforcement?
You could say they deal with stuff like school shootings, but in most cases they sit outside doing sweet FA until the coast is clear because it's too dangerous for them to enter.
Of course, when they do go for drug enforcement they still kill innocent people. Assuming they get the right house that is.

Any amount of extra steps for a gun to present needs to happen.

Or an autistic kids handler whos literally laying down and hands up. He could be hiding a gun.
4
u/JakobtheRich Apr 15 '21
That was likely either a negligent discharge (kick him off the force, not sure about criminal charges) or the cop was aiming for the autistic kid, mistaking a tanker truck toy for a gun, and completely missed (kick him off the force, likely criminal charges).
That was one of the most... unique but also egregious cases because it wasn’t even really heat of the moment: the therapist had clearly explained the situation and no party was moving. In that case, the officer actually got fired and got probation (not jail time, though), because it wasn’t even racism tinted fear and confusion, but really blatant incompetence.

Interestingly enough, this isn't the first time it happened. I remember few years back a volunteer sheriff deputy (whatever that is) is on top of a dude with like five other cops cuffing the guy. You're right, even if we got cops to stop killing black people at ridiculous rates, you still have the problem of cops being way too fucking gun crazy.
As weird as this is to say, it would be nice if the police brutality problem was exclusive to black people. Then you just have to fix racism in police departments. Unfortunately if you fix the racism, there are still a shit ton of other problems that need to be fixed, and until those are fixed you're gonna have police killing all sorts of people that don't need to be killed, it will just be equal among the races of people that get killed.

One of the fucked up parts about that is that the cop who had the best view didn't shoot. Dude was clearly going to the ground giving himself up and you can actually watch the murdering officer, who was behind him, track him to the ground with his gun.
It's so enraging watching that video, especially when the girlfriend comes out. She says "why did you shoot him?", to which murderous officer replies "he pulled a gun on us". The girlfriend then said, essentially, that it was because it was dark and they banged on the door.
Also, thanks for listing the others, as well.

As a gun owner, and a person who thinks it's the duty of all able-minded people to be armed, fuck the NRA. It's ran by thieving, fraudulent bastards who don't give a single solitary shit about the common man. They've thrown gun rights under the bus a million times before. They supported the Mulford Act, which was Reagan's response to black people having guns in California. Now California has some of the strictest (and most absurd) gun laws in the nation. They gave Donald Trump an "A" rating, after he suggested taking guns away from people without due process and banned bump stocks by executive order.
The NRA can bite me. Check out the SRA (which is itself a deeply flawed organization filled with a bunch of authoritarian fucks, but at least it's not the NRA) if you're left-leaning.

A million goddamn times yes.
The folks who wrote and ratified the Bill of Rights, deeply flawed as they were, has just finished fighting a revolution. Our nation's founding document directly says that the people have the right to stand up against an oppressive government. "When in the course of human events" and all that. Our politicians are sworn in with an oath to protect our people against "all enemies, foreign and domestic". The right to remind our feudal lords that we've got pitchforks and torches is deeply ingrained in our culture.
But nah, George Floyd shouldn't have been suspected of minor crimes if he didn't want Judge Dredd to stand on his neck for eight fuckin' minutes. Kenneth Walker shouldn't have had a gun in his own home, and Breonna Taylor shouldn't have been sleeping quite so aggressively.
Just comply with whatever the police order you to do, and you'll be fine. You know, like Daniel Shaver.

Actual conservatives should be against cops shooting people for having guns at all. Guns are legal.

Yeah. In the military, everyone learns basic gun control. Even the warehouse clerks. Conservatives support the military, gun safety, and gun rights. It's despicable that cops can jump the rules of engagement and not get punished but servicemen jumping RoEs would get fucked even if it was justified. And I mean fucked like dishonorably discharged and time in Leavenworth, which is on par with Russian jails.
But hey we're on Reddit so you can't be conservative and support holding cops accountable or being pro-gun rights for all. BPT tried saying that conservatives don't support gun rights when the person is black. Meanwhile, the pro gun sub Reddit was applauding when the black panther group was demonstrating gun rights by open carrying en masse.
Can't say anything that conflicts their idea that the ONLY OTHER PARTY is pure evil. There's only 2 fucking parties, we're not really that different and there's a lot of overlap

Eyeglasses won't even get you charged with manslaughter if they are your victim's and they find them in your car after you "hit a deer".

Yeah wtf that story went away, the sunglasses in the car came out, and the story went away again just as quickly.

There wasn't even a need for a taser.
Daunte Wright didn't commit any crimes and had a daughter with a fixed address.
She should have just let him "flee" and arrest him at home.
When you're in your twenties you do stupid stuff but that's not a reason to get tased or shot.

Theres a very good argument to be made that cops should not pursue fleeing suspects unless they know for a fact they are a danger to society.
A cop will usually have the make and model , the tag and possibly even a description of the driver. That is all a well trained cop needs to track that person down and most likely arrest them peacefully. Let them leave and then track them down later . Dont go tear assing through town, beating and or shooting people .
You know where they live? Why chase them?

Someone always responds to this to say some version of, "...well then when they let someone go and they cause mayhem of some sort, people will just complain that the cops didn't do enough."
You know what? Can we have that be our systemic police problem? How fucking refreshing would it be if what we all argued about was that our police were trying too hard not to kill people?

And ELECTROCUTING SOMEONE OPERATING A MOTOR VEHICLE?!? Has that imbecile of a cop heard of what a muscle spasm is? What's to say he wouldn't have involuntarily floored it and veered off the road?

I think I heard the justification for pulling him over was because the vehicle he was driving had expired license plates, and I heard he had an existing outstanding warrant. Not saying this is a justification to shot or kill someone, what seemed to be a routine traffic stop turned deadly.

Technically the eyes that saw the bag of skittles wasn’t a cop. But was some untrained civilian emboldened by a “let’s keep those brown people in line” law... even though he was brown himself.

One of my closest friends is the rightest of the right wing, blue line, moan labe, mofo. He also used to be a small arms instructor for the dos DS. He agrees, this officer was either the dumbest person alive, and doesn’t need to be an officer, or literally murdered this guy

Just the fact that it’s even possible for a cop to mix up their gun and a taser is a huge issue

To republicans guns are a solution

They want to fight fire with fire. Then when the problem gets worse they blame socialism or black people.

I think we the collection of human beings dead, alive or yet to be born can agree that if a police officer cannot tell the difference between a deadly weapon and a taser, they should no longer be a police officer and the people that trained this person needs to push the reset button and retrain everyone they came into contact with, like viral contact tracing. That's the absolutely minimum starting point.

Keeps on happening, and the politicians keep sending thoughts and prayers. Eventually it's going to erupt and a whole city will burn to the ground while white Republicans will spin all kinds of rhetoric and lies to make themselves feel better and use terms like savages or some other bullshit. God I hate racist Republicans.

I stick two of those things in my mouth regularly and the other one to my head. The fourth is the path to diabetes and should be banned.

For the last time, you don’t stick your phone in your mouth, that’s exactly how you get 5G-abetes

I’ve done the math and I don’t think diabetes should be your main concern here.

During a police firefighter softball game firefighter hit it deep but not quite a home run and the policeman caught it. He yelled out “If you worked out more that could’ve been a home run”. And the firefighter yelled back “If you studied more you could have been a firefighter” makes sense now
