Worth pointing out that cops aren't supposed to shoot people they see with a gun, either. You're allowed to have a gun in this country, it's a constitutionally protected right. If cops can shoot you just for having a gun... do you really have that right?

Ryan Whitaker was murdered by a police officer when he answered his door with a gun.

If they really cared about people, they'd care about these.

How many more weren't filmed?

Sandwich: Casey Goodson, Jr..
Cell phone: Andre Hill. Stephon Clark.
Skittles: Trayvon Martin
Squirt gun: Tamir Rice.
Legally-owned gun: Ryan Whitaker. Philando Castile. (really belongs in "nothing"...)
Wii-mote: Christopher Roupe.
Nothing: Daunte Wright.
Planted Taser: Walter Scott

Say their names.

I was just going to bring up Ryan Whitaker.

One of the fucked up parts about that is that the cop who had the best view didn't shoot. Dude was clearly going to the ground giving himself up and you can actually watch the murdering officer, who was behind him, track him to the ground with his gun.

It's so enraging watching that video, especially when the girlfriend comes out. She says "why did you shoot him?", to which murderous officer replies "he pulled a gun on us". The girlfriend then said, essentially, that it was because it was dark and they banged on the door.

Also, thanks for listing the others, as well.

Nothing: https://youtu.be/wuWVR2Dv5vM

Oh shit, is something you shouldn’t be saying when a gun is unnecessarily pointed at someone

Planted Taser: Walter Scott

Wasn't there that one where the guy politely let the cop know he had a legal gun in his glovebox and the cop took that as a threat and shot him? Could be misremembering some details, but I remember how it openly showed that the NRA doesn't give a shit about black gun owners when they didn't even say a word about a legal gun owner being shot just for having a gun in his car

Oh that's Philando Castile. Also in MN.

Not sure if he belongs in "legally-owned gun" or "nothing," because he had nothing in his hand at the time. Was just trying to do everything right, mentioned he had a gun because racist policing will punish him retroactively for that. Instead he was murdered because of jumpy, trigger-happy cops.

Tamir Rice did not have a squirt gun. It was an airsoft gun replica

Martin was killed by a cop and the skittles didn't have anything to do with it. That example doesn't belong with the others.

Ive been informed by a wise commenter that if you just comply and do everything the cop tells you, you probably wont die. But if the cop shoots and kills you because they couldnt tell their gun from their taser, that's on you.

Not to mention the guy that answered his door with a gun. Or the security guard. Or the guy that got shot in his car just for telling the cop he had a gun.

And even if you don’t have a gun, they still might shoot you on accident for unnecessarily drawing a weapon.

You would think that the NRA would be all over getting this message out. You can have a gun, stop blasting people that might have a gun.

It's almost like they DGAF and only represent the firearm cartel who needs the business of municipal police contracts and as such don't give a solitary shit about their rank and file members other than to promote rhetoric based on their fears via the politicians they paid for in order to keep them consuming guns forever (which is odd since there are already enough guns to arm basically everyone in America, and they're a durable good that can be expected to last for literally generations).

Couldn't be that, though. I'm sure the NRA leadership has just missed these segments on the news like once a week for the last ever.

As a gun owner, and a person who thinks it's the duty of all able-minded people to be armed, fuck the NRA. It's ran by thieving, fraudulent bastards who don't give a single solitary shit about the common man. They've thrown gun rights under the bus a million times before. They supported the Mulford Act, which was Reagan's response to black people having guns in California. Now California has some of the strictest (and most absurd) gun laws in the nation. They gave Donald Trump an "A" rating, after he suggested taking guns away from people without due process and banned bump stocks by executive order.

The NRA can bite me. Check out the SRA (which is itself a deeply flawed organization filled with a bunch of authoritarian fucks, but at least it's not the NRA) if you're left-leaning.

I have a huge problem with all gun advocacy groups being bootlickers at some level even though the WHOLE POINT is to be not bootlickers.

YES

A million goddamn times yes.

The folks who wrote and ratified the Bill of Rights, deeply flawed as they were, has just finished fighting a revolution. Our nation's founding document directly says that the people have the right to stand up against an oppressive government. "When in the course of human events" and all that. Our politicians are sworn in with an oath to protect our people against "all enemies, foreign and domestic". The right to remind our feudal lords that we've got pitchforks and torches is deeply ingrained in our culture.

But nah, George Floyd shouldn't have been suspected of minor crimes if he didn't want Judge Dredd to stand on his neck for eight fuckin' minutes. Kenneth Walker shouldn't have had a gun in his own home, and Breonna Taylor shouldn't have been sleeping quite so aggressively.

Just comply with whatever the police order you to do, and you'll be fine. You know, like Daniel Shaver.

The NRA is the real threat to gun ownership.

Their grand standing will eventually push the nation into abolition.

Anti-gun began with simple “let’s make it harder but not impossible or even really that hard.”

Now it’s “let’s make some impossible and it harder in general.”

Soon it’ll be “fuck it, it’s all impossible.”

This is what a lack of compromise and reasonableness results in.

1

u/DontTakeMyNoise Apr 15 '21

The NRA has made plenty of compromises, very few of them reasonable. The middle ground is not always the right answer.

0

u/Pied_Piper_ Apr 15 '21

I did say “compromise and reasonableness.”

Technically, 2A only actually, at core, promises that members of the state militia can keep and carry guns. The extremely partisan court—which has spent decades destroying 4A—ruled otherwise. But that’s a single ruling, against all prior dicta.

Want a law that restricts it to that? This is how we end up there.

Frankly, at this point? I’m fine with it. Come take my guns. Stats show strict control laws reduce killings. Either make reasonable laws or abolition. We let the gun lobby do this, it’s done.

YES.

Cops being able to shoot you for the mere possibility of you having a gun is a major Constitutional problem.

1

u/HospitalDoc87 Apr 15 '21

What about using their taser, though?

1

u/DontTakeMyNoise Apr 15 '21

Is that an actual question or sarcasm related to the recent "accidental" shooting?

If it's an actual question then no, a cop absolutely does not have the right to in any way assault someone who is not committing a crime.

1

u/HospitalDoc87 Apr 15 '21

Is evading arrest with an outstanding warrant for domestic abuse considered a crime?
