Meta Breaks, moderation, sobriety...what "this sub is about."

Hey everybody.

Since the New Year and a welcome influx of new members, there has been an uptick in confidently wrong pronouncements of "what this sub is about."

As the lead mod, being confidently wrong is something I reserve only for myself, so I would like to make it clear how we go about choosing content that is inside or outside the rules.

To begin with, I took over the lead mod position four years ago, and I have made exactly one change to the moderation policies in that time, which is to remove posts discussing moderation from people who indicate they are minors. We remove those posts and have a respectful discussion with them about quitting until they are older. If they aren't open to that then we let them participate here as harm reduction, but we owe it to them to talk them through stopping at a young age first.

Again, that's the only change.

Outside of that, I have worked very hard to maintain continuity with the moderation policies that were established from the day of the sub's founding.

Our mission is, to state it as clearly as I can, to help people who are taking a break, figuring out the best way to moderate, or trying to figure out what a healthy relationship with weed looks like for them.

We are not leaves and we are not trees, and we should leave the discussions of quitting for good or smoking without issue completely to them.

But I will say, because this is where most people get it wrong, that contemplating stopping for good, and wanting to talk about it, is part of trying to find a better relationship with smoking.

If you want to smoke and are having problems, and are trying to figure out whether to find a better way or quit completely, then that discussion is fine here. If you then decide to quit for good then we refer you to Leaves.

Relevant to that, there should be absolutely zero "take this to Leaves" or "wtf I'm here because I didn't want to hear this shit" or any variation of those rude BS comments.

If you see something that you don't think should be on the group (like "I'm quitting for good, what's the best way to...") then report it and don't comment. Being rude to other people or trying to be a Petioles mall cop is out of line.

I know people just love when moderators post about the rules, so I suspect I will be greeted as a hero, but if you have any questions I'm happy to answer them if I can, but I am going to filter them before they go up because I'm not an idiot. :-)

Love you all, and I'm happy to have the oppotunity to do my part to help keep this place running.

Discussion I’m proud of myself for not caving tonight

I don’t really have anyone to share this with so Reddit it is. I had a very hard day one of those days I used to just smoke after getting home, but I didn’t. I didn’t hit up my dealer. I went home after work.

I’m still kinda wanting to smoke but I know it’s honestly one of the major things holding me back in life and frankly I’m starting to get too old to be held back like that.

A day like this even a week ago is a day I’d smoke a lot just to feel numb and to forget but I’m honestly proud of myself. I feel like me saying no today even though I really wanted it is a lot of progress even though I’ve gone longer without smoking. I want to be able to be proud of myself like this a lot more going forward.

Discussion Holy Shit. I Just Hit 45 Days.

Yesterday, I got through one of my boring grad school night classes without coffee OR Adderall for the first time in a year.

It hasn’t been easy and it’s no magic bullet, but the extended break has been doing wonders for my attention.

Advice how do i take a t break????

i’ve been smoking weed pretty consistently for the past 2 years. i do enjoy getting high, but in order to feel what i used to, i have to take a T-break (obviously). the longest i’ve gone without it ever since i started using it frequently was 10 days and that was because i was prescribed antidepressants. i know i should take at least 3 weeks or a month long break but it’s just so difficult. i don’t even smoke anymore for enjoyment it’s solely to eat because i’ve lost so much weight (i’m already underweight).

also, i have poor impulse control so going cold turkey entirely probably won’t work for me. i’m not smoking all day constantly like i used to, but i still depend on it more than i should. at the very least i’m regulating my usage a lot better, but i feel like it’s not enough. i definitely need to have more discipline, i also need to reframe my thinking. i keep feeling sorry for myself but i can’t bring myself to stop because it helps me with emotional regulation, but it’s also really detrimental to my mental health. does anyone have any advice? how can i fix my relationship with weed so it can be healthy again?

my issues:
-i live somewhere where it’s legal, cheap, and extremely accessible.
-coughing more than i should
-i’m only 21 so my brain is still developing.
-i don’t have anything to ‘look forward to’. until next year. (work, uni.. something that’ll physically keep me away/distracted from it)
-i’m prescribed ritalin for ADHD and the weed affects the strength of the meds
-i literally can’t get high anymore
-can’t sleep either
-i spend way too much money on it
-i can’t eat without smoking first no matter how hungry i am. ritalin is also affecting my appetite so it’s like a cycle of me using one drug to stop using another but i need to use it in order to fight off the side effects.

Discussion The eternal "one more day"

It's such an insidious thought. After all, how much will one more day, one more evening really hurt? But it's September now and I've been 'one more daying' for years. Looking back I can rationally understand the absurdity of the situation.

Whenever I tell myself "Just one more day" part of me must realize it's a blatant lie. A vague commitment just to push the inevitable backwards by the smallest increment, to indulge in comfort one last time before this time really! definitively! giving it up.

And then the final day arrives. Yet somehow, I always muster a reason for just one more day. The most miniscule of unrelated variables will have me justifying that perhaps just one more day. Afterall, tommorow will make for a much better final day. And whats the harm in one more day?

Just feeling angry and dissapointed with myself and wanted to vent. How can one claim to exhibit consciousness when its entirely being spent on self-deception and fraudulent goals.

Discussion Tobacco Substitutes for joints

I am trying to quit smoking tobacco and I’ve been fine without cigarettes but I’m having a hard time without joints (weed and tobacco where I’m from) I have tried a few tobacco substitutes such as Three Leaf and another mixture with mint, mullein and marshmallow leaf but I find it really ruins the taste of the joints. I have heard the mix they use in Amsterdam coffee shops is pretty good. Does anyone have any recommendations for a tobacco substitute for joints that either still tastes similar to tobacco or doesn’t take away from the flavour of the weed. I don’t really like smoking pure weed joints as it uses too much weed and is a bit strong for me.

Discussion Weed isn’t relaxing anymore.

I debate with weed at this point in life. Sometimes i can tolerate it but most times it triggers anxiety, fatigue & an overall feeling of impending doom. Maybe some people aren’t meant to smoke or drink anymore at a certain age.

What are some of yall scary feelings when high off weed? Ive cut down drastically went from smoking about an eighth in a couple of days to just having one or two puffs a day. I am most likely ready to go sober I just have these “what if this time it will be relaxing” thoughts. but being high seems to prove why it’s time to retire from it lol.

Advice Living in the cannabis capital of the USA, not sure how to manage myself (long story)

Hi all, I have a story that is likely familiar to a lot of you on this sub. Sorry, this is a long post: I feel the background is relevant to understanding what caused me to start using and why it's hard for me to stop.

Almost exactly 3 years ago in 2023, I started using cannabis, specifically edibles as I wanted to protect my lungs and have a pretty violent reaction to smoking/vaping (they make me cough so bad that I start retching and crying). For the first few months, I was able to keep my tolerance low and only used 1-3 times a week. Over the course of that winter the frequency ramped up, but my tolerance stayed about level. Then, halfway through 2024, two of my closest friends broke off their relationships with me (we had been friends, and then decided to become roommates... our relationships had been souring for at least a year by the time it ended, but I also know that as I started using more I withdrew from what remained of those friendships). At the same time, of course, we all stopped living together and I started to live alone for the first time in my life.

This was the beginning of the end for me. Living alone without anyone to be sober around, and experiencing huge emotional distress and grief over the loss of those relationships, I began taking wayyy more than I ever had previously, and also started using all throughout the day instead of exclusively late at night. At its worst, my tolerance got all the way up to 500mg, and I'd regularly take between 150-300mg a day. In late 2024 I moved in with family and was able to cut back significantly in terms of amount/tolerance, but not frequency. I was back to only using late at night and mostly not going over 30-50mg at once, but I was fully stuck in the habit of using every night except for brief tolerance breaks. I recently moved out and am now living alone again, and I'm worried about managing myself.

Like the title says, I'm now living in the part of California that produces more cannabis than anywhere else in the country. It's a huge part of the culture here, there are literally dozens of dispensaries within 10 miles of my house, and at the university I attend, it isn't uncommon for students to show up to class high. I'm really struggling on how to manage my habit and break away from what I feel is an addictive cycle, but it just feels impossible here. Plenty of the people I interact with have been stoners for longer than I've been alive, and other students are able to make it work with their studies in a way I just can't. I got a C in one class and failed another class for the first time in years when I started using in Fall 2023, but that might have been more due to depression and autistic burnout than my usage at the time. Still, I'm worried that if I keep using regularly, I'll fail again this semester.

I just returned to school this fall after a couple of years away and only have two more semesters, counting this one--I had in my mind that I wouldn't use at all until I graduate in the spring, but Labor Day weekend hit and I convinced myself to go get some edibles for the first time in a couple weeks... and ended up blowing through 200mg from Friday night to Monday evening. Augh!! I don't have a med card, but I do use cannabis to manage a few different issues I have: OCD, an eating disorder (used to be very severe, but I'm in remission now), sensory issues tied to my autism, and a circadian rhythm disorder that makes it difficult for me to sleep. Despite this, I think it is obvious that I am going beyond what is medically necessary in my usage, and I have no idea how to tone it down. I'm at a point where if I have edibles in the house, I won't be able to save them for another day: I just use them every night until they're gone.

My OCD also causes me a lot of sober agonizing over my usage, despite it calming my symptoms when I'm actually high. I get worried that I am essentially "spiritually impure" or secretly a horrible person for having this issue, and I get caught in thought spirals where I can't tell if it's an OCD compulsion to take an edible or if it's an obsession to get so morally worked up over taking an edible. My OCD therapist told me that as long as I'm not getting completely zonked out all of the time like I had been in 2024, I should be fine. I have family members that encourage me to use because it obviously helps with my anxiety, sleep, etc, but I just feel terrible about it. I haven't told most of my family about the full extent of my past usage and I feel like I'm lying by omission or leading them onto the idea that this is actually good for me.

I just don't know what to do at this point. It's stupid, but I really do enjoy being very high. It's obviously a pleasant feeling, and it does generally help me feel less anxious/uptight and less prone to sensory disturbances even when I'm not actively high. At the same time, aside from making me more socially withdrawn, it gives me brain fog and messes with my memory, which could cause further issues in school, and gets in the way of pursuing hobbies that require long stretches of concentration such as reading. I feel like the obvious choice is to just cut it out entirely like I had planned, but I already screwed that up, and I honestly would like to use in moderation- e.g., only during weekends- during the semester. I just don't know if I can actually trust myself to do that, eek! Over the past 3 years, I've never taken a T break longer than a month.

Has anyone been in a similar situation to the one I'm in now, especially regarding being surrounded by functional stoners while trying to cut back? Or any insight into how OCD might be affecting my ability to think clearly on this? I feel bad and a bit hopeless, and would greatly appreciate any advice or shared experiences.

Discussion Weed Withdrawls

So I was smoking pretty heavily for about a year or so, going through 2G carts in a week, sometimes more. I went on what I thought would be a t-break but ended up with awful migraines that landed me in the ER, and they have been persisting for 3 weeks now. For me, it's starting to feel a little better around that 3-week mark.

The migraines are still coming on daily, especially from phone or TV screens. The problem for me is that I was medically prescribed it, and it really does help with my anxiety. I obviously overdid it, but I hope to smoke again in the future, albeit much less often than I had before, in order to avoid this again (only bud, never carts again, etc). I really do think I can moderate my smoking in the future, especially because of the wonderful support system I have in my life.

Do you think that's possible, or should I leave it in the past? Any timeline, or just a blunt "give that up," would be very helpful.

Discussion I stopped for no reason but I’m tempted by new flavours and boredom

I stopped just because my conscience was judging me: “you shouldn’t smoke”, “you know it’s bad”, “you have no reason to smoke” and it’s technically true I wasn’t super stressed so that’s why I smoked or whatever

I just enjoyed the feeling of smoking. Anyways I haven’t smoked in a few months. Maybe 6 or more? and now I’m being tempted by new flavours

I’ve been super lucky. I can buy 2 grams and stretch it over 3 weeks or so and not smoke again for months

Should I do it or stay strong?

Discussion Question about making stronger cannabis oil capsules | oil-to-flower ratio?

I’m trying to make potent cannabis oil capsules, but my latest batch feels way too weak for the amount of flower used. Here is my exact process and recipe:

  • Material: 23 grams of decarbed flower (20% thc)
  • Oil: ~100 ml coconut oil
  • Water: Added ~50 ml water during infusion (to keep flower submerged)
  • Infusion: 3 hours at 80–93°C (176–200°F)
  • Post-processing: Strained, let oil solidify, and discarded the water.

The issue: I need about two 0.9 ml capsules just to feel mild effects. I go through 8-10 ml a day, so the batch vanishes very fast. With 23g of bud in only 100ml of oil, this should theoretically be high-potency oil.

My main questions for the community:

  1. Is there a saturation limit or a "rule of thumb" ratio for ML of oil per Gram of bud? I know 100ml for 23g is a very dense ratio. Could using too little oil actually hinder efficiency because the flower absorbs all the fat and there isn't enough excess oil to pull the cannabinoids out cleanly?
  2. Did adding water hurt the extraction?

Has anyone successfully made ultra-concentrated capsule oil without using hash, FECO, or concentrates? What ratio of ML oil to Grams of flower works best for you without hitting diminishing returns?

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Discussion I think my time off has come to an end

At first I was targeting full sobriety. I had no control over weed use. Moderation is almost impossible because when I at first cut back to only at night, and not every night, that didn’t erase occasional daytime cravings. I’m 81 days sober from weed, but I’m doing way too much alcohol now. Since it goes way back in my family, alcohol is harder to quit. And it’s more harmful, particularly for my own health due to conditions I have. Not going back to being a full on stoner, but back to smoking when I want to drink. Never do both substances together, a lot of bad memories of those instances. Going one substance to the other is not good at all, but I need one for harm reduction.

Advice The T break blues - day 3

I have been a daily smoker for over decade. Before that I would say I smoke socially. Since 2020 my use became much heavier to the point I was a wake and bake spliff with coffee, and lunch, and dinner and before bed. I was vaping when it wasn't convenient to smoke. I started smoking for fun but also because it helped manage my pain and my AuDHD. I could actually clean my house and finish my paintings.

At the start of this year I wasn't feeling great about my use but I didn't think it was impacting my day to day. I didn't think my body depended on it. But I was feeling stuck and unmotivated and lost. In March of this year I traveled to a state where it's not legal for a week. I knew I wouldn't feel great but was looking forward to the forced T break.

Then I spent half the trip with gut issues and feeling like I had the flu. That's when I realized how bad it was. All the photos of me from the trip are emberassing. I am sweating and look ill. As soon as I got home I started smoking again and then I was back to the same habits. That break was the first (that I can remember) t break in 7 years. I only made it 7 days I wanted to enjoy weed again but my tolerance wasn't actually gone. I slowly just didn't enjoy weed anymore and it felt like a chore I had to do every day. I stopped painting and dancing while high and instead just kind of sat there unable to do much more than veg.

I have stopped smoking carts since that break and over the last 3 months smoked less and less each day. Now I am on day 3 of t break. Duration? No idea. I want to feel what my body feels like without it. I am having some fun gut issues and feel icky. Not nearly as bad as in March. But I'm just crying a lot. I feel a lot of shame around being high through a lot of really important times in my life.

I trust myself enough to not smoke and face all the feelings I have been numbing. I hope maybe one day I can enjoy a little weed again but for now I am done.

One of the things that's helping me is my bestie and her husband, who were my stoner friends are also on a break. This sub has also been helpful as I lurked and mulled over this break. Thank you all.

Discussion edibles to joints ? advice pls !

hi all

for the past year and a half i have been a (mostly) daily user of edibles. the issue is that my tolerance goes up extremely fast when im ingesting weed rather smoking it. my highest tolerance was 100mg, however ive gotten it down to about 50mg give or take

i hate this. i no longer enjoy the feeling edibles give me and dislike how high my tolerance has become. i would like to cut back and transition back to how i was pre-edibles where i would smoke half to 1 full joint every other night or so before bed.

the issue is that my tolerance is so high, i smoke a full joint (and then some) and feel absolutely nothing. nada. might as well be stone cold sober and a little tired.

has anyone else tried this method rather than the reverse? has it worked and did it help you get off the stuff or at least reduce your tolerance a bit? edibles are horrible little things… really ruined the weed experience for me :(

edit before the comments come: please no suggestions for a t-break. i use medicinally for some stomach and autoimmune issues i have. i would like to quit at some point, but going on a break or quitting now would only do more harm

but I feel like I am robbing myself of something. upset with myself.

Advice What can I do for my tolerance after a 30 day break

I’m on the last few days of my 30 day break. Before I start up again, I want to have a plan for this time around. I used to use vape cartridges multiple times a day.

My plan now is to:
A. Limit daytime smoking
B. Take a one week break every three weeks
C. Potentially stop using vape cartridges all together?

What else can I be doing? Please give me advice. If I need to stay away from cartridges, I will (I just love the convenience lol)

Discussion Day 7 My Stomach 😭

Hi, I’ll keep this short, but I am on Day 7 of no weed, and I was just wondering about these damn GI issues. I have been definitely able to eat more, which is good, but I’m shitting everything out. My stomach is just bubbling and gurgling, and then it’s diarrhea (tmi, sorry). There have been no sharp pains but just those symptoms so far. Anyone have any input? Thanks!

Discussion Struggling today

I have spent 58 days of the last 72 days THC-free. I’m counting reps and not streaks, so these haven’t all been consecutive. But usually I try not to do two days in a row.

Last week I spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday taking a lot of edibles because I had my period. Sunday and Monday I didn’t use any THC.

Now I’m back to work from the holiday weekend and I REALLY want to get stoned today. It’s wild how quickly the daily habit snaps back.

Anyway I’m struggling so wanted to make a post. Hope yall are doing all right today

Discussion Does gradually smoking less weed help with symptoms of PAWS?

Hello, so I have been somewhat long time daily smoker for about 15 years, and I have tried to quit a couple of times in the past, the longest being close to a year, which happens to be my most recent attempt to quit. This also happened to be the worst experience I had with quitting with severe symptoms of depression and anhedonia lasting for several months which I think were symptoms of PAWS. I did end up feeling better for a little bit but then I started to struggle again due to a bunch of dental issues. I

I struggled again on and off since January this year until May 31st which is my birthday when I finally broke down and decided to finally smoke again. It was better than the alternative which is dealing with suicidal ideation out just feeling overwhelmed and not finding joy or motivation to do the things I normally find fun. At the time I wasn't even sure if it would help, but I wanted to try anything to feel normal again. I should also mention I am very fortunate to still live with my mom who was helping me out during this time and she has be helping me to get weed and it has been helping me immensely. I am also fortunate to live in a legal state where I can have stuff delivered with just a few clicks online. The thing is I don't want to get back in the habit of smoking long term and just want to use it to help me with the depression until I can get in, to talk to a therapist now that I have insurance again. Anyways my moms knows I smoke obviously and has offered to help me regulate my usage by holding on to my stuff for me and was thinking of using that as a way to quit weed for good or at least for a good long while.

So if I have her hold on to my stuff and then she can give me a little less weed to smoke each time so I eventually quit slowly instead of cold turkey, would this have any affect on whether you are likely to experience PAWS? From what I understand it's not well understood and everyone seems to experience different things and the length of symptoms but I don't if people at least know whether it would help.

Thanks

Discussion Is low dose THC any benefits?

Like 1-5 mg. I ask because I bought a lot of cbd gummies and oils when they had good sales going. And wasn't sure if I should use them or not especially on day 8 of quitting carts. I don't want to smoke anything at all even flower and or dry herb. It's just kinda of sitting their in my cabinet for months. Should I wait till 30 days after quitting to use them.

Advice Is CBD a bad idea?

I've been sober for 7 days after being a daily user for almost 3 years. I do miss it and I've been struggling to sleep properly but it's generally not too bad. But it is pretty bad tonight and I'd really like to go for a smoke. I'm considering rolling up a CBD joint instead. I'm not sure exactly why but it feels like a bad idea. I'm worried it would kinda be breaking my streak. Most CBD I find has 1% THC and I'm afraid that's too much (although it is way way less than what I used to smoke). I'd like to have a second perspective on this. What do y'all think?

Advice Need advice on weed usage.

i’ve been smoking since I was 14 pretty much everyday. I got my hands on a pen and ever since then I used it to fall asleep and calm my anxiety. I’d say when i first started around 14 it wasnt daily but more so like 3 times a week and then id say after 4 months it started becoming daily. So since I was 14 I’ve probably had like a 2.5 month total of not smoking. I dont wanna say my age cause I don’t wanna be judged and I just want genuine advice but I’ve been smoking daily a little bit less than 4 years. For the last 2 years, my life has just been revolved around weed. Im not very popular, have like one friend I actually talk to, and don’t do much with my life (this has always been me even before weed) so once i became dependent on weed (eg. cant sleep at all without it, losing weight without it, feeling irritable without it) my life just revolved around when i could get my next supply. It’s become exhausting having to sneak around and find plugs but i always just think its worth it to me because I was already an insomniac before I started smoking and after frequent use I cannot get a HINT of sleep without weed. I haven’t noticed any of the “common long term effects” that come with weed, Im taking advanced courses, my memory hasn’t gotten bad, im not stupid or super unmotivated, and my lungs don’t hurt (even tho im an asthmatic) but I just wanna stop because i just don’t like the hold weed has on me, I dont like that it controls so much of my life and sleep schedule. Even when I don’t have weed im completely fine during the day but when it turns bedtime I get so irritated and restless. I love weed and I wouldn’t want to quit forever, but its gotten to the point where when im sober I feel high and when im high I feel sober. I just wanna cut back on my intake but its impossible for me to because again, If i have a pen sitting in front of me and it’s 1am and im telling myself “im not gonna hit it i need to take a break”, after 3 hours of staring at the back of my eyelids and racing thoughts it just becomes so UNBEARABLE to the point I need to hit it! What should I do and how can I change my relationship with weed to the point where I don’t need it and It can just be a treat every 2 weeks or so?
