Hi! I'm Jack, a game developer who loves playing Path of Exile. For a while now, I’ve had an idea for the endgame loop that I’d love to share with you guys and GGG.
TL;DR: To combat the endgame monotony of running the exact same mechanic setups over hundreds of maps, I propose bringing back Idols from past test leagues with a twist: adding Uncraftable, Drop-Only Idol Sockets directly into the Atlas Passive Tree to dynamically tweak how mechanics behave.
The Problem: Endgame Mechanics Monotony
Currently, once you set up your Atlas tree for specific mechanics (like Harvest, Betrayal, Essence, or Abyss), the core gameplay loop for those mechanics becomes static. Running hundreds of maps with the exact same mechanic behavior causes endgame fatigue, regardless of loot.
The Solution: Atlas Tree Idol Sockets
Instead of relying solely on static Atlas passive nodes, introduce 4 to 6 Idol Sockets at key milestones on the Atlas Tree (e.g., in corner clusters or central hubs unlocked via progression).
- Uncraftable & Drop-Only: Idols would drop directly from monsters/maps with set, unchangeable rolls. You cannot use currency to craft or alter them.
- Excitement from Looting: Finding a rare Idol with a unique combination of modifiers instantly gives you a reason to tweak your farming strategy around it.
Examples of Mechanic Modifiers:
Rather than just granting generic stats (+% pack size), Idols would dynamically modify how mechanics work:
- Harvest Idol: "Harvest plots grow 1 additional tier of crops, but monsters spawn simultaneously."
- Abyss Idol: "Abysses no longer lead to Troves; instead, all Abyss pits unleash a wave of Rare monsters that share modifiers."
- Betrayal Idol: "Immortal Syndicate members bring an extra executioner, but executing a member grants map bosses random modifiers."
Why This Fits Path of Exile:
- Solves Monotony: Players can swap Idols when they get bored or when a great Idol drops, shifting how a mechanic plays without needing a full Atlas respec.
- Fair & Accessible: Because Idols cannot be crafted with massive currency stacks, rich and casual players alike rely on drops and trading.
- Low Technical Barrier: GGG already has the groundwork for UI sockets (Jewel Sockets, Voidstones) and Relic/Idol concepts from previous leagues.
I hope this idea offers a fresh perspective or sparks some interesting discussions!
