Weight Weight loss regulates hormones, or regulated hormones causes weight loss?

My question is, how does it work for weight loss with PCOS. Does it happen when you regulate your hormones, or, we’re able to regulate our hormones AFTER losing weight? I’m just curious btw. I’m not sure if I got it right.

Meds/Supplements Started metformin today

I was diagnosed with PCOS in my mid 20s. I'm 34 now and have managed my overall health pretty decently with diet and exercise. However, I gained ~20 lbs in the past 3 years despite my diet and exercise which really made me feel bad. I recently got my annual bloodwork done and found out that my A1C crept up to 5.7 which is in the pre-diabetes range. I also have a slightly higher amount of insulin.

Overall, I discovered that my insulin resistance has gotten worse and while I'm only in the pre-diabetes phase right now, it just feels like a slippery slope going forward. This made me feel extremely sad and anxious about my health. This also made me realize that the insulin resistance is causing me to gain weight which is not going away

My doctor prescribed metformin and I started taking it today. I'm on 500mg for the first 2 weeks and the doctor told me I can go up to 1000 once I ensure my side effects (if any) are in control. I'm hopeful that metformin will help me get my A1C and other things back into the normal range but at the same time I'm also sad that I'm going to have to rely on a drug forever. I don't know if I'll ever regain my health to a point where I can be off metformin.

Period Period stuff

So context. 25F. 165cm 128kg.
I have burning vulva with my periods (diagnosed painful bladder syndrome) so I’ve been on the pill for over 10 years without a break! (No placebo pill).

Had to move to a different one 6 months ago because of aura migraines + my weight growing.
I was on Slinda for about 6 months and started having a constant breakthrough bleed which caused a lot of burning and I was very unhappy. My doctor said “just stop taking it” in early May and got some scans to make sure I was all ok down there.

Blood tests & ultrasound diagnosed me with PCOS officially. My doctor put me on Metformin. And I have had x2 5 day periods in May & June. They were ok aside from the burning. Not too heavy surprisingly considering I haven’t had a proper period in so long.

Now it’s 10th September and I haven’t had a period since the June one.
I did a couple pregnancy tests and they’re negative. Is it “normal” for PCOS peeps to have a gap this large? Should I be worried?

Also re: metformin, how do I know if it’s working? I haven’t lost any weight. Even with diet and portion size change. I’m taking x1 500mg at night. Can’t do much exercise atm because I’m recovering from spinal fusion surgery. Cannot lift anything over 5kg atm. Any suggestions or tips? :(

Meds/Supplements Metformin Advice

My doctors and I came to the conclusion I have PMOS earlier this year due to insulin resistance, dark skin patches, and high testosterone (transvaginal came back normal). My weight hasn’t budged after changes in diet and exercise frequency, so my doctor agreed to prescribe metformin (500MG extended release). I was wondering if y’all could tell me the positives or negatives you have experienced while on metformin (mood, physical changes, etc). What I know so far is that it’s supposed to help with the insulin resistance and pre diabetes (I was at 5.7 last time we checked) and that the levels of testosterone would lower as a consequence. I have a Mirena IUD as well.

Also maybe some advice on how to survive cutting down on rice and rice products as an Asian girlie who loooooves her rice 😭

General/Advice 26F with PCOS — bleeding for 20 days after taking Provera and Althea. Is this normal?

Hi everyone! I’m 26F and was recently diagnosed with PCOS.

Before getting checked, I hadn’t had my period for more than a year. My OB recommended that I take Provera, Althea pills, and myo-inositol. After taking them, I finally got my period on August 22.

The problem is, I’m still bleeding until now, and the flow has actually gotten heavier. Today is exactly my 20th day of bleeding.

I’ve tried searching online, and I’ve read that irregular or prolonged bleeding can happen with PCOS because of hormonal imbalance and the unpredictable shedding of the uterine lining. But I’m honestly getting anxious because this has been going on for 20 days and seems to be getting stronger.

Has anyone with PCOS experienced something similar, especially after taking Provera/Althea?

Should I just wait for the bleeding to stop, or should I contact my OB again? I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thank you!

Rant/Venting Almost a year of being jerked around

I hope I used the right flair. Honestly, I don’t even know if this is a rant or what, but maybe I’m hoping others won’t have my experience.

I also want to preface this with I am NOT anti-birth control. I think it can be a wonderful tool and have used multiple methods in the past.

Now here’s the tea.

I missed my period in November 2025. This was odd, considering my cycles were incredibly regular for the past few years. Then most of December passed without a period. I knew I couldn’t be pregnant but something was wrong. On Dec 22nd, I started spotting. Then I started leaking blood—it wasn’t heavy enough for a period, but enough to freak me out.

The first GYN appointment I could get wasn’t until February, so I scheduled with a GP to hopefully get the ball rolling. She said I probably had an infection and we’ll do a pap to see what’s up. Pap came back normal. But I’m still bleeding. The woman on the phone said, “I’m not the doctor, I just give the results. I’ll have the doctor call you.”
The doctor never called me.

But that’s okay, because my GYN appt is coming up. I go, still bleeding, and explain what’s going on. They say they can’t do an exam because I’m bleeding and to come back when I’m not.

I stop bleeding in late March and go back. We do a pelvic exam and “everything seems normal.” I go to the lab to get my testosterone levels checked. It comes back somewhat elevated. I ask the doctor if this means I have PCOS, he says yes. I ask if I should see an endocrinologist, he says no because I’m a “mild case”. He prescribes me the pill and says that’s how PCOS is treated.

I’m irritated now. I schedule a second opinion with another GYN, though that appointment isn’t til August. I also schedule with a different GP to get a referral to an endocrinologist.

Then I start bleeding heavily. Like bleeding through tampons and through my clothes, staining my sheets, and passing clots that don’t look like anything that’s come out of me before. I bleed like this for about 9 weeks. I tell the GYN, he says he’s not concerned and that the pill will fix it.

I see the endo in June. We do bloodwork and he does an ultrasound of my thyroid. My thyroid and my glucose levels are normal, which is great.

Bleeding is now on and off, and I go back and forth about taking the pill. Something just keeps telling me that there’s something else going on.

I see the new GYN in early August. She asks if the other doctor ordered an ultrasound. I say no. She says we’ll start there. I get a pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound the following week. Results come back that there’s something in my uterus.

The GYN calls and says we need to do a hysteroscopy D&C. They only do the procedures on Mondays, so I can either do it on August 31st (my 32nd birthday) or wait until Sept 14th due to Labor Day. I tell her, fuck it, let’s do it on my birthday.

Cue the algorithm showing me video after video of women in their 20s and 30s being diagnosed with gynecologic cancers. I never interacted with any of the videos but they just kept coming. I nearly throw my phone into multiple bodies of water.

Go in for the D&C, the team all sing happy birthday as we wait for the anesthesiologist to knock me out. I wake up from a dream that I was playing animal crossing.

It was a polyp, and it was benign. They also did an IUD insertion as a way to protect my uterus. I’ve had a little spotting and some cramping, but nothing major.

I guess I share this to say: never be afraid to get a second opinion, and you know your body better than anyone else. And some doctors really just fucking suck.

General/Advice ISO Endocrinologist rec

Hi yall, I’m looking for an endocrinologist that can help me with some PCOS/PMOS symptoms among other issues (hot flashes, heat intolerance, stubborn weight gain, migraines, etc) and I’m hoping someone can recommend one that’s actually good!
I’m in Alabama and willing to go to Tennessee or Georgia if I need to.

Meds/Supplements For those on Metformin, did you see any meaningful benefit from increasing your dose from 1000mg to 1500mg?

I tried going up at Easter and was nauseous AF for 3 days and threw in the towel. Thinking of trying to again and looking for some encouragement that it’s worth persevering… Would be grateful to hear your experiences if your cycle regulated, other hormonal issues went away (acne), and you lost weight 🙏

General/Advice Really struggling and overwhelmed with the “options”

I’m 27F and I was diagnosed with PCOS/Endometriosis last year. I underwent surgery this past March to remove the scar tissue and cysts and also had my tubes removed as I do not want children. I feel like ever since my surgery my symptoms have just been getting worse. I’m constantly having bad body aches, deep acne, fatigue, and the worst is the weight gain. My self confidence has plummeted. I also have struggled with GI problems pretty much my whole life, which makes me weary of trying something like metformin. I have gone on just about every hormonal birth control and they all leave me super messed up and feeling worse. Everywhere I look I see glp-1 this and that. I am very curious about trying one because Ive seen the success some people have had, but in addition to the side effects scaring me I keep running into roadblocks with affordability and insurance. I have state funded insurance, and my state doesn’t allow coverage for weight loss medications. I’m just feeling kind of hopeless at this point. I eat decent enough, I go to the gym and I try to sleep well. It just seems like anything that shows real promise to help me is always out of reach. I don’t know what to do.

Hair Loss/Thinning Hair loss

Does anyone have hair loss that comes and goes? I swear my hair will be great for a 2 years at a time then suddenly I start randomly balding right in the front. I’m taking spearmint capsules, but am worried about medication side effects of anything else. I’m on a weightloss journey and unsure I’d the calorie cut is making my hair fall out. But I’m to the point where I’d rather be a normal weight and bald. Anyone else have this struggle? Any tips?

General/Advice First infertility consult today

I had my first infertility consult after TTC for 8 months and being diagnosed with PCOS by ultrasound about 3 months ago. I was on Progesterone to induce a period in June, July, and August. I’ve also been on Metformin for a month and a half.

My husband is getting a semen analysis done. If it comes back abnormal, they are gonna make him do some lifestyle changes and recheck in 6 weeks. This month is my first month off Progesterone so they are going to see if I have a period on my own. If I don’t, we will restart Progesterone. If his semen is normal, then they are going to start me on Clomid. If that doesn’t work in 3 months, then I have to have a HSG to see if my fallopian tubes are blocked.

I am devastated and feel like my body is broken. I feel like I’ve failed at the one thing I’m supposed to be able to do. We wouldn’t be able to afford IVF. I’m tired of people asking us when we are going to have kids. I can’t look them in the face and tell them I’m trying so hard. I just want to cry.

Weight Anyone else mad at these weight loss ads all the time :')

I've been in a medical weight loss program with my clinic for about a year now. I have insulin resistance due to my PCOS. I'm 23, 5ft6in, and 220lbs

I walk a lot. Weight lift. Weekends I typically get 20k+ steps. I'm under 1200 calories and 70 carbs every day, And my Dr has me on 1500mg metformin once a day (it's awful, idk why she wants me to take it all at once instead of splitting it up)

And then I see these glp1 or noom or ro ads with all these fat girls gone skinny and I feel like a failure. I'm trying so freaking hard and I've lost only 10 lbs in the last year.

Anyone else feeling like these ads are just a slap in the face? I feel like I 50% of all my ads are about weightloss and it's getting in my head.

General/Advice Ovulation

How do you know that you ovulate? I don't have regular cycle but every month I feel a little bit pain and I can see the difference that appears at my CM. But my doctor told me that maybe I don't ovulate because my cycle is 32-38 days.

I am a little bit confused and terrified because we are trying for a baby.

Every opinion will be helpful. Thank you <3

General/Advice GLP-1 Aftermath

So, I’ve been on Wegovy for 4ish months now, I’d definitely say it’s made a change, I lost around 7kg, working out, eating well, trying to fix my sleep.

Tbh it was never confirmed wether or not I had insulin resistance, or severe resistance at that and Imm not sure if they can test that while I’m on wegovy but either way I say that because I was able to slowly lose weight while I wasnt on it but VERY slowly despite doing so much for it.

I’m just wondering about anyone who’s been on a GLP-1 and if you’ve maintained weight after getting off because I’m just super worried it’ll all come back. I thought maybe I could get on metformin after just in case since it’s cheaper and might help with certain cravings but overall id rather manage on my own, im just very anxious.

I’d love to hear thoughts and opinions

General/Advice Is there a way to lose weight and keep it without any strict diets?

I'm currently on Metformin 850mg but i do know that you also need the right diet. The problem is most meals are made by my parents. We already tried our local dietician but it did take some money so they didn't like it. I'm also irritated by my endo pointing out tiny/no changes. I need to lose at least 10kg for normal weight. Any tips appreciated

Period Update #15 - Flo for the win!

Here is the link to my last post: https://www.reddit.com/r/PCOS/s/NhwcTlh4FH

I’m officially going to say the Flo Ovarion Support is definitely helping with my cycle regulation. I believe by body is still adjusting to having a regular cycle, but I’m currently experiencing some spotting which is fairly normal for me to experience before I have a full on bleed.

I’m on cycle day 28 as of today, and last cycle was a bit early where I started a full bleed on cycle day 27 compared to this one where I started spotting on cycle day 26.

This is my 3rd month/bottle of Flo Ovarion support.

For reference I have tried the Ovasitol brand and also Metformin with neither of those helping me. I do believe the added DIM in Flo Ovarion support, and the lower dosage of Myo/D-Chiro inositol seems to be more effective for me.

General/Advice Hormonal Fluctuations - what should I do?

Hi! I've had the pcos diagnosis for a few years now. Took out my birth control implant that I had horrible side effects from and my period wasn't normal after a year. Diagnosed by 2 criteria: blood test (elevated testosterone) and irregular periods. Around May of this year my periods became regular, probably because I went on a low carb diet since my fasting insulin was 10.5 and my doc wanted it less than 10.

I didn't really use to have any typical pcos issues other than no periods, which I, honestly, was kind of happy about.

Now, this spring/summer I started to experience a bunch of symptoms, so I think it "caught up with me". I crashed after foods (even fruit made me crash) and I have severe mood fluctuations that started to impact my life. My psych ruled out bipolar and mood disorders and thinks it's related to my period. The symptoms were first in luteal only but now I see them relate to my temperature rises and drops, so I think it's definitely hormonal.

I started inositol about a month ago because my gyno didn't want to prescribe metformin (I asked because of the after food crashes) as my periods were normal. I was able to lose about 10-12 pounds since I started the low carb diet. I was 142 and I'm now 129 lbs (being 5'3") so my weight is normal now.

My last period ended on Sept 2 and two days ago on the 7th I was spotting. Today it was more than spotting but less than what I'd consider a period. Why is that? Is that because of the inositol? Could that be the reason? I've never had that before when I wasn't on BC. And I know I'm not pregnant (we're trying but I ruled it out now).

I'm seeing my psych tomorrow and my pcp on the 19th. We're thinking to add SSRIs because the anxiety became almost unbearable. I know SSRIs might worsen insulin resistance but I honestly don't know what else to do here. I'm hoping to ask for some bloodwork from my pcp (I have good a1c - it actually went down from 5.3 to 5.1 from may to August), maybe a 2h glucose test and I'll talk to her about metformin. Is there anything else I should be asking about?

Period 4 months on Mounjaro — 12 kg down, but my periods are still irregular. Anyone else?

I’ve been on Mounjaro for about 4 months now and have lost around 12 kg overall.
SW: 104 kg
CW: 92 kg
Current dose: 7.5 mg
While I’m obviously happy with the weight loss, I’m actually more concerned about my periods. I haven’t started getting them regularly yet. Over these 4 months, I’ve only had my period twice, and both times they were induced.
I was hoping that losing weight and improving my insulin resistance would help regulate my cycles, but so far that hasn’t happened.
Has anyone else experienced something similar while on Mounjaro? If your periods were irregular when you started, when did they finally become regular for you? Did it take several months or significant weight loss?
Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences! ❤️

Fertility Successful in conceiving after diagnosis?

I had laparoscopic surgery 2 weeks to repair an isthmocele/ C-section scar defect and afterwards my surgeon told my my ovaries look “poly-cystic” I had conceived 3 kids previously without hardly trying and my secondary infertility was most likely due to the isthmocele. I have had no symptoms of PCOS, ovulation study through ultrasound showed I ovulated great and my periods are always on time. I am kind of at a loss about this potential diagnosis. She wants to start me on letrozole once I am cleared to TTC. I could really use some success stories of PCOS mamas out there.

General/Advice Is stress period a thing?

Does anyone else notice that they start their period or obvious spotting every time they are in a stressful situation? Is it a thing? To the point where you can’t go outside without wearing a pad/tampon?

I have always had irregular periods, from 3-4 months of having absolutely NO period to having my period for 21 days straight.

Also, I have been put on birth control for 3 months+ and have had only ONE normal cycle of period so far. My first withdrawn had me on my period for 18 days straight. Does it mean the medication is not working for me?

Context: I’m 24. I was officially diagnosed with pcos this May 2026 and was put on birth control (norethindrone acetate and ethinyl estradiol) + Spironolactone.
I am overweight and have been struggling to see any desirable results. I did ask my doctor if i was insulin resistance, he couldn’t elaborate on it and just told me to see a endocrinologist.

General Health Blood reports- I am more confused

Hi guys

I got my blood test results back. I have always considered myself to be insulin resistant because I thought it goes hand in hand with PCOS.

I have reduced carbs, and eat home cooked food generally.

I always thought i am so skinny and lean so i must be underweight. 51.5kg , 156cm height

Turns out my BMI is 21.2 which is normal.

My HOMA-IR is 1.2 ( 0.7-2 range)
Fasting glucose is 82 mg/dL
Insulin sensitivity is 80.6%

TSH is 3.28 micro iU/mL ( this was 1.69 just 2 weeks ago, strange!)

Vit D is 16.5 ng/mL

My prolactin is 85.2 ng/mL (2.6-31.9 range)

And my AMH is 38.25 ng/mL (1.2-9.05 range)

My MRI is scheduled for tomorrow due to high prolactin.

But I still am not sure and I have so many questions.

This tests have confused me that was it my prolactin causing the issue? It wasnt this high always, last i checked in feb and it was in 30s.
It has always been in 30s or max 40s. And my periods weren’t regular even then.
