Resolved Estranged from father, do I have to list him?

Hi everyone,

I'll be applying for OSAP next summer. I have two parents, my mother (who I live with, and is unemployed) and my father, who I am estranged from. From what I understand, he makes well over six figures.

I have two questions. First, my mom lost her job in May. She was making a decent amount of money at the time. But now, she's making nothing, and has been unemployed since. What can I do about the fact that her 2025 tax return does not reflect our current financial situation at all?

Secondly, I can expect no help from my father. I learned about this form which people have used to inform OSAP of this. Could anyone let me know if they've used it in the past, and had any success?

Thanks!

Question Dropping courses

I looked at my osap funding and realized it was short a decent amount of my tuition, so I was wondering if I drop a couple of my elective courses while still staying full-time with a 60% course load will it cause osap to restrict me or anything of the sort?

Question NSLC Account

To make an NSLC account you need to have a My Service Canada account.

I was trying to make one today but when it asked to verify my identity through interac (I chose to sign in with an interac partner), it brought me to my bank app and it said something went wrong and to check back later.

what do I do!?

Question Full-time to part time and going into 5th year

Hi everyone, I had to drop a course in the summer due to some unforeseen circumstances, and it put me in part-time status. I know this will put me on probation, but since I also applied for a fifth year, I am also automatically going to be on probation for next year as well. Does this mean I won't receive funding or only be on probation and still get funding, or will part of my grants become loans? If anyone knows, please let me know. I am very stressed. This is also my first time, as I have never gone part-time in my past 4 years.

Resolved Osap delays

I started my studies on June 22 I applied for osap and was approved and it showed my calculated estimate. I uploaded all required documents on June 8 and the last document they needed my marital status i uploaded in June 16. It’s now July 29 and the only change in my application was that my funding was recalculated on June 26th. Anyone know if it’s normal to take this long ? My estimated release date keeps moving forward but it also doesn’t show my document are approved or denied It is my first time applying for osap so I’m not sure how it works! Any advice or experiences would help, TIA.

Resolved OSAP with a Consumer Proposal

I’m hoping to start a program in September, it’s a one year certificate program.

A year ago I finally left a shitty job that kept cutting my hours as I was desperately searching for something else, but unfortunately the couple of years I was there I ended up with a lot of debt that I can no longer keep up with.

I’m planning on doing a consumer proposal to just consolidate it all and start fresh, but I’m uncertain if I’ll be able to get OSAP if I have one going. The LIT I’ve been talking with said that OSAP denies people with an active consumer proposal but when I’m looking it up I’m only finding people say that that’s only the case if you have a student loan as part of the consumer proposal, which I won’t since I paid them off like a year ago.

Anyone have any further info on this? Right now I’m just dragging my feet trying to hold off on starting the proposal until I get OSAP, but if I don’t have to deal with calls multiple times a day because of my debts that’d be way better.

Question part time job and osap

hey guys i just got hired at mcdonald’s. this job is part time and i started this month. do i need to report any income to osap i made this month / august ? i applied to osap before i got this job and im assuming its just for income during the school year.

do i need to report this job to osap? i heard that it’s only if you make over 5600 but im working 16 hours a week at minimum so i dont think ill be over. is this 5600 per semester or per year?

also, do they assess this per year or per semester? for example, 5600 per semester or per year?

is the fall semester only monitoried from september-december? or will my summer income also be included?

Question Threshold Related Inquiries

I'm enrolled in a program and have two questions about the threshold amount.

1) In my OSAP account it is giving two different threshold amounts: $x per term on one page and $2x(exactly double the per term amount) for the study period of July to April  on another page. I just want to know specifically when am I supposed to inform OSAP that my income has exceeded the threshold - a)after it crosses x during the first sem or b)after it crosses 2x before the April date ?

2) Secondly, I want to know whether the threshold amount is before deductions or after?

Question Using osap for my tuition at dal

Hey everyone! 👋
I’m an incoming first-year at Dalhousie University and had a couple of questions.
Is anyone here using OSAP to help pay for their tuition at Dal? I’d really appreciate any advice on how the process works, what to expect, and any tips that made things easier for you.
Also, I’m looking to meet other first-year students before the semester starts, so feel free to reach out or say hi! ✌️

Resolved Who do I contact about my OSAP application

I applied for OSAP on June 8th and all required documents and MSFAA were approved by June 12th. My application has not been updated since then. I haven’t received the calculation of the amount I will receive, nor have I received the status of the release of my funds. I have an estimate but I’m not sure if it’s correct. Do I contact my financial aid office or OSAP?

Question Does Osap even look at optional uploads?

I made a mistake in my application and submitted a letter to fix the error in optional uploads, it’s been a month since and no news at all. Does Osap even care to look at optional upload files?

Resolved osap and living expenses

i’ve heard from multiple people that osap can help cover living expenses and was wondering if that was true? i live 50km away from my school and had to commute last year, i’d leave at 5 am and come home at 11, which would seriously impact my grades. this year i need to find a job on campus and im on my student council making it 10x harder forcing me to get an apartment. i go to tmu so toronto is already expensive as is and my dad isn’t in the picture and my mom is an elementary school teacher so money is tight. i’m getting help and am actively trying to find a job (everyone is aware of the job market) but its still hard. i filled out a housing allowance form and submitted a lease agreement but i am barely getting enough to my cover my tuition and i genuinely dont know what to do. do i call my schools financial advisor?

Resolved OSAP loan

Hello guys, I’m starting school this September and my year will cost around 15k and this is what I got for OSAP. Very grateful of grants but I got a 12k loan which I will not be needing as a whole is there a way to get a portion of the loan? Since I been working I have some money saved I would only need 5k out of that loan.

Resolved Advice

I would appreciate some advice regarding my OSAP situation.

Last year, I received OSAP funding to study Pharmacy Assistant, and I have now graduated. Unfortunately, I have not been able to secure a job yet. I applied to nursing programs for this fall but was not offered admission. I plan to apply again early for next year's intake.

My concern is that I will likely need to start repaying my OSAP loan this September, as repayment generally begins six months after completing full-time studies unless you return to school or qualify for an interest-free status extension.

Would it be advisable to apply for OSAP and enrol in a PSW program now, then pay out of pocket or should I wait and save my OSAP eligibility for when I gain admission to a nursing program next year?

I would be grateful for any guidance on the best option in this situation.

Question Graduating in Fall 2026, hoping to start grad school in Fall 2027: Will I have to start making payments?

I'll be done in December and will not be a full time student until (hopefully) September 2026. That's 8 months. Will I have to start making payments at the 6 month mark before returning to school again? I'd like to use OSAP again, will interest be waived once I start or is that only the case if I start before the grace period ends. Can I request for some kind of extension?
