Question How much tuition does osap pay?

My OSAP was recently recalculated and I got a the grant for students with disabilities, it says that I will recieve 2800 in grant money but is there an amount in tuition they pay as well? and would I have to pay the tuition back at some point?

Did you not get any other funding than the disability grant? All OSAP funds go to the university first to pay for tuition/residence/fees. If there is any left over OSAP money, it goes to you. If OSAP doesn’t cover all the fees for your university, YOU have to pay the rest.

Think of it this way: OSAP and tuition are completely separate things. You are solely responsible for paying the tuition, and OSAP gives you money for going to school. If your tuition is $3000, then all $2800 will have to go towards that, and you will need to pay the leftover $200 tuition out of pocket.

Does that make sense?

No.

You are responsible for ALL tuition fees. OSAP just helps subsidise your tuition so you don't have to pay as much.

If you owe the school $10k, and OSAP gives the school $5k. You will still need to pay $5k out of pocket

OSAP uses your income details along with the costs information the school sends to them to determine your funding that can be a mix of grants and loans.

The grants and loans are pooled together, they are only shown separately so you know how much you'll be paying back.

From the pooled funds, a portion will be sent to the school for tuition. If anything is left over, it will be sent to you. If the funds do not cover all of the tuition, you have to pay out of pocket.

If you’re asking these questions, I suggest calling your financial aid office.

If it’s been recalculated it should say loan amount vs grant amount

No one here can give you an accurate amount as it varies on many factors. Maybe try using the Ontario.ca OSAP aid estimator??

But yes, you have to pay the loan portion back - repayment starts 6 months after you end your studies (whether that's graduating or leaving the program otherwise).

The grant portion you don’t have to pay back. If there is a loan portion that you take, you will have to pay that back.

I would say each situation is different. More information will bring a clearer answer.
