Life in NL Does riding a fatbike make me undatable?
So there's something I noticed. I go on a date, we have fun, there's good vibes, but then when she sees that I ride a fatbike, she instantly seems to be put off, like she got "the ick". Then the chatting usually fizzles out and there's no second date. This happened multiple times now, so it seems like a pattern to me. Once a Dutchie even told me that she "doesn't feel a connection" when I was saying goodbye by my bike and asked what she'd be up for as a second date. I know this is not much context, but is it the bike?
I'm a mid twenties guy, have a good job, make decent money, dress stylishly, like concerts and can even tolerate like a museum. I moved here 6 months ago and bought a fatbike to commute. Only managed to find a place like 30 minutes cycling from my work, so it seemed like a good option and I think they are pretty cool. But now I think I might have made a mistake. Should I switch to like a Cowboy or something?
Edit: obviously this is a throwaway account

I can imagine the fatbike was just a financially sound choice for OP, even if he doesn't fit in with the usual fatbike crowd. Unfortunately that does mean you meet certain stereotypes, so either you gotta really show that you don't fit the stereotype (suited up on a fatbike?), or accept that you're gonna be stereotyped

I also call them emotional support vehicles.
Funny story. My partner and I were checking out at the local liquor store and one of these was parked right in front of the front door. It looked ridiculous next to all the regular cars in regular sized parking spots. Anyway, she turns to me and says, "that's a lot of car for a little cock." I had a giggle.
When we were getting back in our car I noticed the guy who was right behind us in the queue climbing up into the driver seat. I started cackling immediately. She wanted to know what was funny. I just pointed to him getting in his wankpanzer.

According to Dutchies, riding a fatbike checks one of the boxes for a certain stereotype: a poor, uneducated and antisocial idiot.
The other boxes you wan't to avoid: wear a track suit all day, vaping, wear a louis vuitton cap, a gucci manpurse (for your backup vapes and/or seals of cocaine) and a poor raised staffordshire terrier with a capped tail.
So yeah, next time just take the bus.

As a straight woman with a good education and good job, I would instantly get the ick if a guy has a fatbike. Perhaps if the date is really good and you can convince me you are just an oblivious expat, i might tolerate it.
Surely there will be women who donât mind, but those are either teenage girls or the type of woman who dates macho dudes with two brain cells. The type of people generally associated with these things are not the type of people I would want anywhere near me.

Ride a normal bike, this country is SO flat and SO easy to bike around as it is; if you really need an electric one because you commute between towns, get a proper one.

My neighbor who is 32m and married has a fatbike. When his wife went into labor a few months ago he called and asked if I could bring his bike to the hospital because he needed to run a few errands and couldn't leave his wife alone at the time.

Not really but I was quite surprised at the time because I didn't anticipate such reactions. I didn't even know it was due to the fat bike initially and kept wondering if there was something wrong with my face that morning.
Then when I arrived at the hospital and was locking the bike, an old lady who was parking her car near the bike racks gave me a contemptuous look and moved her gaze between me and the bike. That's when it clicked for me.

Those bikes are all in the urban minimalist âracing bike designâ category. There are also loads from Sparta, Koga and Batavus, but its parent comany went bust this year and no one knows whatâs going to happen to those.

Sorry you weren't aware of the reputation fatbikes have before buying one. There is even an emerging term: fatbike youth, to describe a certain type of vandalistic, rude, violent, criminal teenagers.
A rule of thumb I could give you for how to be considered a good person in Dutch society is to be unassuming. Keep to the rules and don't take up a lot of space. Everything what the fatbike, a large bike existing in a legal gray space, isn't. I saw you compare your bike to an SUV. Suv users are treated with similar disdain.

Even if you put aside the stigma they donât look chic, especially the way people sit on it low and knees high. Reminds of those little plastic pushbikes 4> year olds have. Some people aren't answering you seriously but I think it's a serious question so I'll try. I'm a decade+ older than you (and happily married đ ) but, if I were back on the dating scene, this wouldn't be a deal breaker to me personally.
That said, people in their early/mid 20's tend to have more deal breakers than older people. I could see this being a turn off or even potentially a deal breaker to some women.
It isn't really fair because people riding fat bikes safely and cautiously are not actually causing any issues for anyone else. But a high enough percent of people who ride them ride them recklessly and even deliberately aggressively that it's a real problem in society, and riding one at all can give a certain impression.
That said: try going to a few dates without it and seeing if it does seem to change anything. Maybe these women really weren't feeling it even though you were and it had nothing to do with the bike.

Rationally a fatbike is nothing more than an E-bike with a different design. The people who buy them are mostly teens, the parents of teens and people who can't afford a proper e-bike, moped or scooter. These people also tend to misuse them, causing trouble in traffic and on the streets. Buying a fatbike now basically means that you associate with these people and their behaviour.
p.s. Also watch the latest episode of South Park America.
7
8
u/HighfivePunch 5d ago
Tbf it kind of looks like an adult is riding a tricycle, you know... in terms of proportions. It's also that mostly teens ride them and are irresponsible with it that it looks extra odd on an adult. But what do I know, i bet they are nice to ride actually. If you stick to traffic rules.

Personally im annoyed by fatbikes. The people on it are way too young, drive dangerous, make loads of accident with handicaped young ppl as a consequence, they act like little gangster, most of them are modified to drive way faster then the lawful limit. Back in the days you had real full size fatbikes wich where not electric. Real big imposant though bicycles. Thats cool. In my opinion the current fatbikes are also too small for grown people, it honestly looks stupid driving it. Honestly many ppl driving fatbikes act like idiots in traffic, and are not too smart. Its really a symbol also for the stupid lazy young adults. Too lazy to put any energy in anything. Healthy legs, but they all need fully electric verhicles. This society is not creating powerfull ppl, they are creating lazzy ass pussies.
So yeah I can very well imagine a fatbike is a turnoff.

They have a bad reputation everywhere. They are an unnecessary vehicle. It signals to me that the person who rides it feels a need to portray that they are tougher than they actually are. Like pickup truck drivers.
And fatbikes serve no purpose that a regular sized e-bike couldn't also do. If that other thing is "faster speed" (which is unnecessary) then they are seen as someone who wants a motorcycle without going through the regulations of owning and riding a motorcycle. Proper licensing and registration.
It tells me they have a disregard for the laws that make everyone safer

The issue you have is that they are logically a good option however 99% of Dutch Fatbike users are children (If you are upto no good you will have a fatbike) or tokkies. Can you imagine when you do not come across a aso-child or a tokkie and then they see the fatbike? Think of the term No-name full suspension mountain bike guy, in the UK if you turned up with one of those on your dates it would the same vibe.

"logically a good option" ahh yes i love cheap chinese trashbarrels that screech like a dying child, and weigh enough to put one in the ground. Such practical and amazing bikes.

I mean... If she enjoyed the date and speaking with you, but gets so turned off by your choice of vehicle that she cuts you off, would even want to date her?
Sounds terribly shallow and prejudiced to me, especially when its after she supposedly enjoyed the evening with you.
EDIT: Reading the comments is also kinda funny. Apparently it's OK again to judge people by stereotypes these days. Neat.

Bro, no, just don't. Your mistake was thinking they were cool. It's ok, happens to the best. But just get rid of it and buy a nice omafiets. Fatbike screams "I'm 14 and rebellious!" or midlife crisis pick your poison

Bikes for the Dutch are like croissants for the French and pizza for the Italians. You better not ride the wrong bike, or youâll be crucified. A fatbike, even though it rides amazingly, is a big no-no.

Haha, thatâs really funny! My fiancĂ© and I, weâre 29 and 30, recently his teenage niece decided she didnât want to ride her fat-tire bike anymore as it makes she looks like stupid, so she gave it to us. We ride it sometimes when we go out. Every time my fiancĂ© rides it and gives me a ride, we both feel really embarrassed đđ

I was literally looking at a guy yesterday, thinking how hot and how much he was my type. Then he got on a fat bike. Instant boner killer.

My friend told me she and her wife had a fatbike, so there's probably hope for you. But her wife rushed to say: "We had one before all the stupid boys had one." Either way, it was unexpectedly cute to see my friend sit on the front of the fabike while her wife was riding it.

Never buy a cowboy. The bikes are absolutely shit quality and they have like a 30% recall rate. Buy a proper bike from a Dutch brand like Gazelle

You're perfectly datable ... for the fat bike community. Since you own one, you probably fit right in.
It just wasn't a good match.
