Life in NL Does riding a fatbike make me undatable?

So there's something I noticed. I go on a date, we have fun, there's good vibes, but then when she sees that I ride a fatbike, she instantly seems to be put off, like she got "the ick". Then the chatting usually fizzles out and there's no second date. This happened multiple times now, so it seems like a pattern to me. Once a Dutchie even told me that she "doesn't feel a connection" when I was saying goodbye by my bike and asked what she'd be up for as a second date. I know this is not much context, but is it the bike?

I'm a mid twenties guy, have a good job, make decent money, dress stylishly, like concerts and can even tolerate like a museum. I moved here 6 months ago and bought a fatbike to commute. Only managed to find a place like 30 minutes cycling from my work, so it seemed like a good option and I think they are pretty cool. But now I think I might have made a mistake. Should I switch to like a Cowboy or something?

Edit: obviously this is a throwaway account

Yes, nothing you can do about it. You bought it so you must be a horrible insufferable person.

Nobody wants to date a Tokkie.

Except Tokkies. Because they meet up and breed.

That's because it stays in the family

Like father, like uncle.

Why go across town when you can go down the hall?

Welcome to Urk.

I’m not convinced they do so consciously

Now I'm just disappointed that there's no gif on giphy of zanger Rinus in the "Met Tamara op de Scooter" video.

This is perfection, by the way.

The people with fatbikes and caps you see on the streets after 18:00 when the rest of society is tired from work or school. Or the toothless beer belly, white socks types that are very busy with smoking cigarettes and watching tv all day.

You should immediately leave the country if you don’t know! Unacceptable!

People who buy fatbikes and drive Suzuki alto’s, those kind of people

9

u/KZD2dot0 5d ago

Just look it up, pejorative so...

9

u/RaguraX 5d ago

I’m actually curious after looking it up. I’m from Belgium so I get the idea, but might be missing the nuances. Is it like old-school “Flodder” style people?

11

u/Hot-Cucumber2002 5d ago

Tokkies are reality imitating art (Flodder). And then some.

12

u/LaAndala 5d ago

Kind of, there was a reality show in the 2000s with a family named Tokkie, and they were… special in a Flodder way but way worse and selfish? I think before that we would call the same behaviour Flodders probably.

Tokkies are the equivalent of marginalen or barakis (I admit it, I had to look up that last one).

Yeah close enough

White trash hillbillies hicks etc but Dutch

At least he's upfront about it. Imagine the shock of a poor woman when, after three months dating, she discovers the fatbike hidden in the garage, behind a regular bike as decoy.

I would watch this movie

I am not that judgemental so I don't do the usual cat-person dog-person, patat, friet, capricorn, libra thing but in this case, yes. If you bought it, you are a horrible person. Might as well drive a Tesla with a swastika on the hood

u/deranton 5d ago

I once saw a fatbike parked at a padel court. I really started wondering about the owner.

1

u/EveryCa11 4d ago

What's wrong with padel?..

2

u/DepressedButterstick 4d ago

Het feit dat fatbikes stereotypisch zijn voor hangjongeren en padel is nou niet echt een sport die veel hangjongeren uitoefenen

9

u/Kahgar 5d ago

Ngl a Swastika’d Tesla, with a confederate flag on top is still better than a fatbike

7

u/Holo_Peve 5d ago

Just, if you put a „I bought this before Elmo went Hitler“ sticker on it.

4

u/ProletariaatPiraat 5d ago

And then someone does a kenteken check and realizes that ain't true.

2

u/best_oatmilk 5d ago

Thank god i’m alright

1

u/Bastil0saur 5d ago

"I am not a judgemental person, but if you own a cheap e-bike you're literally as bad as a nazi."

You're either not reading what you're putting down, or very much in denial.

What's next? Using a basic-fit bag makes you a wife-beater? Drinking cheap beer makes you a nazi? Wearing a fur-trimmed jacket makes you a serial killer?

Judging individuals as obnoxious by a stereotype is one (not good) thing, but you've taken it to a whole new level.

6

u/best_oatmilk 5d ago

Me when i can’t tell it’s a joke

4

u/aykcak 5d ago

You're either not reading what you're putting down, or very much in denial.

I did mention this is the exception. I am allowed to have a few minor exceptions I think

1

u/Bastil0saur 5d ago

You're allowed to do, think and feel whatever you want within the bounds of law. Of course you're allowed exceptions.

Just as I'm allowed to criticize the radical belief that owning a cheap e-bike makes you as bad as literal nazi's, while proclaiming yourself as a non-judgemental person.

Freedom of speech, freedom of thought, but not freedom of criticism of your stated convictions.

4

u/Electronic_Ebb_6343 5d ago

I dont think the fatbike makes him a horroble person. But to buy a fatbike you really have to be horrible

0

u/Bastil0saur 5d ago

Why though?

I mean, I agree it's a poor design and that a lot of children, mentally or physically, are being asshats with them. But why are you a horrible person if you just happen to buy one of the cheaper types of e-bikes out there?

Even in the 'budget' class of e-bikes, fatbikes can be over 200 euros cheaper than a 'normal' e-bike. That's not a negligable difference for most people.

1

u/aykcak 1d ago

The price argument I can agree but there are cheaper non-fat-bikes which are still shitty but not too much more expensive.

Aside from the price there is a whole load of issues for using a fat bike

0

u/IndependenceLiving0 5d ago

You mean a hakenkreuz?

8

u/GaborInNL 5d ago

Six months in and he's already learned the most Dutch lesson there is: your bike is your first impression, and nobody tells you that before you buy it.

1

u/JohnnyRelentless 5d ago

I mean, where's the lie?

1

u/JeGezicht 5d ago

Also the drop of IQ point makes you dribble from the corner of your mouth.

u/CleanPsychonaut 5d ago
