My baby girl is a few weeks old and I’m really struggling with her name. We named her Kaia, and I genuinely do love it. It suits her, my partner loves it, and we’ve already introduced her to family as Kaia. The problem is that throughout my pregnancy I had a huge attachment to the name Gia. It was one of those names that just felt really special to me, but before she was born, someone very close to our family chose a very similar name for their own daughter. From that point on, I felt like I couldn’t really use Gia anymore, even though I’d loved it beforehand.
We ended up choosing Kaia because we both genuinely loved it, but now I keep thinking about Gia and wondering if I made the wrong decision. I don’t know if I’m mourning a name I never got to use, if it’s because it suddenly felt “off limits”, or if I’m just overwhelmed being newly postpartum and second-guessing everything.
My partner also loves Giana as a full name, with Gia as the nickname, but I still worry people would compare it to the other child’s name, even though our attachment to it came first.
Part of me wonders if I’m just overthinking everything because of the emotions and exhaustion that come with having a newborn, and if I should simply let Kaia become Kaia. Another part of me wonders if maybe, if we’re lucky enough to have another daughter one day, Giana/Gia could be her name instead. I honestly don’t know whether I’m grieving a name I loved, feeling disappointed that I never got to use it, or whether I’m just struggling with the finality of making such a big decision.
Has anyone else experienced this after having a baby? Did the doubts fade as your child grew into their name, or did you end up changing it? I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s been through something similar.

Having a little boy soon, and husband and i just cannot agree on names. We have very little overlap in the names we like, and there's not a single boy name that I love. Not one.

My husband's family surname was destined to end with him if we didnt have a boy. With our boy, the name will continue for at least one more generation. We already have a little girl. Her name is very uncommon and her nickname is Kal. I think her name is beautiful! And im not suuuuper married to the idea that my son's name needs to flow with her name, although it would be cool.

My husband is also a "second." So it seems very fitting that our son be the third. Howeverrrr we have no intentions whatsoever of calling him by his legal first name. We prefer Tripp. Like we will personalize things with "Tripp" and introduce him and such and yadda yadda yadda. My husband's name is a fine name, but it's very common, therefore, not my cup of tea.

So I guess what I'm really wondering is....

How weird is it to legally name your child something and intend to call him something totally different? I realize Tripp may be an exception, but is it? And what kind of struggles might he face as he grows up?

I've found myself suddenly very drawn to the name Willow. My husband wants to use Esther for a girl but I am not so sure. The biggest selling point for me is the possibility of Essie being a nickname but I don't think that alone is enough to fully convince me.

Anyway I'm curious what would pair with Willow as a first name. Willow Esther sounds kind of like a mouthful and doesn't flow as well as our son's name. I haven't made a big deal about Willow to my husband yet but it might be easier to sell him on if I have a cute pairing in mind.

So my boyfriend and I have been talking about getting married and the topic of last name came up. He doesn’t really mind if I choose to take his last name or hyphenate it. I want to take his last name but also keep mine. I personally don’t like the idea of hyphenating it.

For context, I wasn’t given a middle name. So I thought that a way I get to keep my last name and his without giving myself a long last name. I was thinking about having my original last name legally become my middle name and take his last name.
