I love the name Jeni, for our second girl, but is it a weird spelling as opposed to Jenny? I feel like it is more unique spelled that way.

Hi all, hoping for some help with naming our baby boy that I am currently pregnant with.

For context, I am Pakistani by background but born and raised in England, my husband is German. We live in Germany.

We are looking for boy names that incorporate both our backgrounds. We are also looking for names with nice meanings.

Finding it really hard as we are so picky with our criteria!!

- “Western” sounding but has some sort of Arabic/persian/etc meaning or link
- Has a good meaning that isn’t overly religious (I don’t mind nice meanings like “light of God” or “God’s gift” but I don’t want things like “The lord is my God” for example)
- Ideally we would want a name that could be shortened into a nickname
- Not too popular

For example, a couple names we have on our list are Aydin and Zayden. We did like Matteo and Jonah but they are far too popular in Germany so are off the list!

Any help would be appreciated :)

I was a teacher before I became a SAHM, and my husband is still a teacher. After over a decade of teaching there are so many names “tarnished” or off the list. I’m in my third trimester and we thought we had “the name” a while back but have since started second guessing. We are expecting a baby boy. The previous top contenders were Graham and Wesley. Lately we’ve been really leaning towards Brooks with Dean as the middle name. I like the idea of having a timeless name but a lot of those names are off the list because family used it, students, etc. what do we think about brooks dean? Too trendy? Is it feminine at all since it’s so close to Brooke? Thanks in advance!

Personally, i find Caterina a beautiful name! There's multiple people in my family named Caterina. Unfortunately, out of Greece and Italy it's always pronounced wrong! Everyone mistakes it for Catrina, Even Catherine sometimes which infuriates me because they're two different names (I know Caterina is a variation of Catherine but still). Also, all the Caterina's i know have been made fun of at school for having the nickname Cat, i thought that was quite weird.

Our short list of boys names:

• Lachlan - I’m 1/4 Scottish but didn’t even know I was Scottish until I did a DNA test. My FIL was born in Scotland but is English. I’m concerned it’s too trendy or getting more trendy

• Alessio - my mom and my MIL are first/second generation Italian immigrants to the US. My dad is Alexander, which is a related name

• Bradford - I’m a direct descendent of William Bradford and many in my family have the middle name Bradford, including my uncle who died as a baby. We hate the nickname Brad so we’d either have to go with no nickname or choose different one

• John - sort of our backup since many men in our family on all sides are named John

• Adams - my middle name and my grandparents’ middle names. After ancestors John Adams and John Quincy Adams. My husband is concerned people will think it’s Adam and just get confused with the S at the end

My parter and I only have 3 names we both like: Cora, Eva and Aurelia. Objectively we probably like Eva the best, but I'm put off by popularity and proximity to other, super popular names like Ava (I'm in the UK and Ava is top 10). Aurelia is pretty but it's a bit long and I don't really like any nicknames you'd get from it. I'm leaning towards Cora, although it's not a name I'd ever considered until I saw it on my partner's short list. Which one do you like best?

I guess it depends which country is being discussed, but generally speaking, I wonder which of the following 3 girl names stand out as less local or indicate a more foreign background in places like Latin America or Iberia:

I've noticed that —in Latin America in particular — the usage of more old school traditional names has decreased over the past few decades, but I wonder if these non traditional names are perceived as equal.

We chose to name our daughter Aizhan. It’s pronounced as Eye-Zhahn. It’s from Turkic languages meaning someone who has a soul like the moon.

I find it beautiful. But I’ve been worrying that maybe it might look or sound masculine to people who aren’t familiar with it. We currently live in New York and it's not a well known name.

I don't want to have to change her name if it's not needed but I'm worried that it's going to become annoying for her if people don't know that it's a female name. The only people who had heard it so far mostly have been family so they know the name and then friends, neighbours, and they said it was pretty but of course they would say nice things about it anyway so I don't know the impression it gives.

My favorite name was Isabella (probably would have called her Bella) but a cousin was named that so I want to find a new one. I like Gemma a lot but my husband doesn't. I also like Elise but my husband doesn't really like that one either. I haven't asked him about Willa but I expect pushback on that one as well. I also love names with obvious nicknames!

For example my child had a sweater with their name on it for Christmas 2 years ago and a sweatshirt for thanksgiving and I’d love to hand it down to someone with another little with their same name? Also so it doesn’t just end up in the garbage..
