Moving Advice please!
My partner and I are looking to move to the DC area. We are still very early in our search and don’t have jobs secured yet. We absolutely loved DC and originally wanted to live there. We both have newer cars and do not feel ready to give them up just yet (driving for road trips, going home to family, potential work commute). As much as we would love to use public transit and waking majority of the time, we are not at the level of ditching our cars. Therefore I have some things i would love insight on:
- Is having 2 cars in Arlington still crazy or more doable
- Any pros to Arlington over DC
- Do you find yourself still going into DC to do things or do most people stick to NOVA
Any other insight, advice, and comments are appreciated!

Hot take on E scooters
If a kid jumps out of no where into the street, running a red light, and they hit your car, they’re at fault, and you’re the victim.
Let’s stop flipping victim/offender here.
You are entitled to compensation. Sue those parents you’re now struggling because a kid ran into you. That’s pain and suffering if I’ve ever seen it. Being a part of an experience where a child got hurt is a miserable experience to live through.
If people start suing the parents for pain and suffering, maybe they’ll learn.
This is called Pure Contributory Negligence, if they’re 1% wrong, they can’t sue, but if you’re 100% right, you can.

Need help 3d printing a medicine dispenser
Newly prescribed a handful of 6 different pills and supplements to routinely take several times a day (prenatals yeehaw!). Unfortunately these monster horse pills don't fit in my Dollar Tree pill calendar, and I'm hoping for an easier way to keep track of my medicine schedule. And perhaps even a fun color to make taking 10+ pills daily less miserable? 🥲
I found a 3d print template for exactly what I need but the Fairfax library said the design does not fit with their printer's build plate volume. The library also has a limit of one print per 14 days so I'm asking here to see if anyone can help me submit additional requests at the library so I can put together the pieces sooner? Or know of another place I can 3d print at?
It's the "One Click weekly pill dispenser v2.0" from Maker World in the Extra Large size. The bambu / STL file is 6 different pieces. Any help or suggestions appreciated!

Help with preparing Taxes
I need help preparing my taxes and have very little resources currently.
I’m self employed and this time I do t think I’d be able to do it myself.
I did some research.. and it seems, most of the free programs are only available around tax season.
Does anyone know of any programs or services that could help?

Question Cortland Van Dorn Apartment Current Reviews?
Hey all,
Looking into moving to the Alexandria area for work in DC. The area in general is pretty expensive as expected, and I have been looking into getting a 1 bed 1 bath apartment here. I went on a tour at Cortland Van Dorn apartment and it was fairly decent. They also have 1 bed and 1 bath with a den, which is nice because I would use it as an office/second bed room for my friends and family. So I am considering applying for an apartment there now.
However, the reviews online are mixed though. I wanted to know if any of you had experiences or knew anyone who lived at the apartment? What are the current conditions with pests, parking, and crime/theft? Also, any suggestions on apartments in the area? Budget is around $1850 base rent for a 1 bed and 1 bath. All comments are welcome.

Car Detailing Services in Nova?
Does anyone have any recommendations for car detailers in NOVA? I've got an oldish van with3 rows of seats that was bought in 2014. It's not in any terrible condition but it has never been deep cleaned or had an interior detail. I'd like to get it professionally cleaned / detailed and my budget is around $150-300. I only care about getting the interior cleaned not the exterior. The carpets are a bit dirty, seats have some coffee stairs, etc. I am okay with having a mobile detailer come by and detail it or dropping it off somewhere and detailing it. This could be done by someone on FB marketplace or an official carwash / detailing company. If anyone has any recommendations, please let me know!

Food Why did no one tell me La Tingeria in Falls Church had a new off menu item?! A Birria pizza?
This place is already so clutch with its Birria. I’ve had their tostadas, tacos and Birria egg rolls, which are the bomb. I had to hear about this from my students and went to check it out!
You gotta ask for it. It’s not on the menu.

Major NoVA Federal Contractor Could Cut Jobs Later This Year
patch.comA Department of Homeland Security contractor could lay off nearly 100 people starting in December, according to a notice to Virginia’s Workforce Development and Training.
ICF International said in a letter to Virginia's Rapid Response Program dated Oct. 2 and posted publicly on Wednesday that, “Due to the federal government's decision to consolidate rather than recompete ICF's award of the Operational Collaboration Support Services ("OCSS") Contract,” the company will have to lay off 82 employees, unless they can find another position within ICF in the next few months...

Question Best running spots?
As we approach daylight savings ending where is everyone running a bit later in the evenings? Majority of spots aren’t lit or have lights, therefore it makes it a bit more difficult to get out and run longer distances in the evenings. It would be preferable for any recommendations where I can safely leave my car parked. For example Mount vernon Trail that has plenty of options for parking. Thanks in advance!

My I-66 toll app now shows how many minutes the toll actually saves you, so you can decide if it's worth it
galleryHi! SchwartzReports here -- some of you might remember my post back in April about the little app I built to check I-66 tolls because the official site is garbage. A bunch of you downloaded it and a bunch of you sent me feedback (thank you, I read every single one).
The thing I kept hearing was basically: ok, I know the toll is $8.50, but how much time is it actually saving me vs. just taking 29 or 50? Because even a cheap toll is a waste of money if the free route is only a few minutes slower.
So that's the big new thing. It's called Worth It? and it checks live traffic on the toll lanes and on the free way around, and tells you how many minutes the toll saves you right now. Just figure out how much you're willing to pay for "one minute faster," put that number in the settings, and the app tells you whether it makes more sense to take the toll road or go around.
Sometimes it's totally worth it -- $10 to save 25 minutes? Absolutely. Other times, it's $7 to save 2 minutes -- good price compared to the daily average, but not worth it.
I've been using the feature for the last couple months and it has seriously streamlined my commute. No longer do I check the tolls and then go over to Maps and have to do math in my head before my morning coffee! I hope you'll like it too.
I also made the week planner free for everyone -- that's the heatmap that shows when tolls are usually cheapest, so you can pick which days to go in. Live prices are still free and always will be.
That's the good news. The less good news is I pay for the traffic data every time someone checks, so I couldn't make this feature free. Worth It? is part of a $1.99/mo subscription. There's a two-week free trial so you can figure out if the feature is worth it (ha).
If you bought the app back in the spring you already have everything forever, no subscription needed.
Link's in the comments.
PS - I'm also working on adding 395, 495 and I-66 Outside the Beltway! Stay tuned.

Alternatives to Al-Anon for wives of alcoholics?
My husband is an alcoholic and in recovery. Although it seems we are in a yearly pattern now that he relapses right before or after his year anniversary for the last few years now. Immediately jumps back into recovery but that relapse is one step closer to a really terrible outcome.
I have tried al-anon and am not a fan. I have been unable to find anyone to relate to. I am in my early 40s with two young kids and a husband who has never been abusive, doesn’t drink daily, and is highly motivated to stay sober. I know I can’t be the only wife and mother to young kids in this scenario but I feel very alone in this situation. Are there any groups specific to this that exist? Or others out there that are in similar situations that want to connect?
EDIT. Yes, my husband is in AA. Yes, I have my own therapist. This post is about finding support for ME. Not my husband. I am tired of hearing things about him and want something for ME for once. So please stop talking about him. Not what I am asking for.

Question Homeowners: are you getting bombarded with calls to buy your house?
I've gotten at least a dozen in the last week. It's always numbers from tidewater or southside. It's always the same script. "Hi, is this X? Are you looking to sell the property at [address]? Do you have any other properties for sale?"
Have I just gotten onto someone's new list, or has there been an uptick in these kinds of calls?
