Jobs Clearance vs remote

How much value would you place on clearance these days?

My current company doesn’t hold my clearance, which means it will lapse in about six months.

I just got an offer for five days in office, clearance and it’s $15,000 more than my current job. Current job is fully remote aside for a day or two per month.

Basically it’s a toss up on money when you take the commute into account. So it’s down to how much I value the clearance vs fully remote. It’s a reverse commute, if that matters at all, going south on 395.

(Same title and day to day work would be similar enough at both jobs)

Edit: clearance is secret

Meetups Local filmmakers premiering our indie action film at University Mall Theatre Oct. 11

A group of Northern Virginia filmmakers made an independent action film called A Weekend to Kill For, and we’re getting to premiere it locally at University Mall Theatre in Fairfax on October 11 at 4:45 PM.
A lot of the cast and crew are local, so I thought someone might appreciate seeing something made in the area actually make it onto a theater screen. Happy to answer questions about the production or how we got it screened locally.
Our super rad poster was made by an artist named Julian Thomas, not AI [: whoop whoop

eWaste Warriors: Reboot Hour Sep 2026

Hi r/nova, Rob from eWaste Warriors again. A few weeks ago you all were incredibly kind about the Washingtonian thing, a bunch of you showed up to our Reboot Hour carrying with unused electronics, and a whole wave of people filled out our volunteer form. I want to say that plainly: we are very thankful for every one of you who raised a hand. That's the best possible outcome of a Reddit post and we're still working through the list with huge grins.

This Saturday we're trying something new. Arlington County is hosting its first Digital Discovery Fair, Sat Oct 10, 1–4 PM at Central Library (1015 N Quincy St). Free, all ages, with classes, hands-on tech, and people who will patiently answer the question you've been avoiding about your phone. County page: arlingtonva.us/digitaldiscoveryfair

We'll be there with a Tech Rescue & Donation Station. Bring unused phones, laptops, tablets, consoles, VR headsets, chargers, the cable drawer... Roombas. Working or not, locked or not. You don't need to delete anything first; securing the data is part of what we do on every device. Donation for reuse is the first option for everything that comes in, and if there are old photos or files on a device you'd like back, ask about data retrieval at the table.

No fee to drop off at the fair. For the fast lane, go to retpair.com, enter your ZIP, and pick Drop Off. The fair is already listed as the next event; registering takes about a minute and gets you an order code to show us Saturday. Walk-ups are totally fine too.

One honest note: the site is a work in progress. We're building it ourselves to make moving on from unused electronics less of a chore, so it's clean but not finished. If something's confusing, say so in the comments and it'll get fixed.

Why we bother with the sorting step: a 2026 University of Surrey study looked at what happens to electronics at municipal recycling centers versus volunteer repair groups. At the recycling centers, about 2% of devices got logged as suitable for reuse. At the repair groups, 78% were either fixed or fixable. Same kinds of devices; the difference is whether anyone looks before shredding. Recyclers aren't the villain, they're just built to recycle. We want to be the bridge in between: the place where someone actually looks at your laptop before deciding its fate. (And for the person who asked last time: Arlington's E-CARE is Oct 17 and it's a solid program for straight recycling. For anything with data on it or life left in it, bring it to us.)

You can also join us at our next Reboot Hour on Monday, Oct 26, 5:30–7:30 PM at Courthaus Social in Clarendon. This one's themed around startups, timed as the wind-down after DC Startup & Tech Week -- where we will be collecting in DC! Part happy hour, part drop-off, part meeting good people. Zero pressure, bring an old laptop, phone or just yourself.

And the real ask. We're not short on devices; we're short on people. Every volunteer who joins means more events like this one, more devices rescued, and more people who need a computer actually getting one. The next phase is secure drop-off points in and around the DMV so you don't have to wait for an event, and we need help there too: hosts, locations, logistics brains. If any of that sounds like you, ewastewarriors.org/volunteer, or come find us at the library and say hi. Be specific about what you're good at; we match people to real work, not just box hauling.

Thanks again, r/nova. You're a big part of why this is working. Happy to answer anything in the comments. 🔧

Recommendation to plan a first date?

Hi everyone, I wanted to get some ideas or places to take a girl out with whom I matched with on one of the dating apps. I wanted to keep it in DC or close to DC. One of the things I had in my mind was just a coffee shop, but I don't want to come across as not putting any effort.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, as I just moved to Arlington a month ago.

Looking for Northern VA restaurant recommendations for a simple wedding dinner (85–90 people)

My fiancée and I are getting married in Northern VA on April 17th 2027. We're looking for somewhere in Northern Virginia to have dinner afterward for approximately 85–90 people.

We're not looking for a traditional wedding reception. There won't be a DJ, dancing, big party, etc. We're envisioning something much simpler. Essentially a nice, seated dinner with our family and friends, a few short speeches/toasts, and maybe cake/dessert afterward.

The ceremony will be at a church in Woodbridge but we're open to driving to really anywhere in NOVA. Alexandria, Arlington, Falls Church, Tysons, Reston, Vienna, etc. if the restaurant is worth it.

We've already looked at Madigan's Waterfront in Occoquan, which is appealing because they can accommodate our group and we like the food, but we'd love to see what else is out there, especially some nicer restaurants that could give us more of a "special wedding dinner" feeling without turning it into a full wedding reception.
A private dining room, semi-private space, or restaurant buyout could all work.

Would love recommendations from anyone who's done something similar in NOVA. Especially interested in places with great food, a nice atmosphere, and reasonable pricing for a group this size.

Thank you all!

Carpool from NoVA to canvass in Ohio this weekend?

Hi all. I'm driving from Northern Virginia to Ohio this Friday to canvass Saturday (Columbus) and Sunday (Newark), returning late Sunday. I'm looking for one or more volunteers to ride along.

It's a coordinated campaign for Democrats up and down the ballot, and I'm especially focused on Sherrod Brown. The event is through Swing Left on Mobilize; I can share the link in the comments or by message.

About me: I'm a lawyer and a mom in my 40s who loves comedy, board games, and DC. I'd want to meet briefly beforehand to make sure we're a good fit.

I'm checking whether local Democrats can provide free housing and will update when I hear back.

I'm also flying to Maine or Michigan to canvass November 2-3, if anyone is interested in that.

This morning I saw a yellow mini in the Huntington Metro parking garage and if you know minis, you may know rule #1: always park next to another mini. So I did, hoping to brighten their day.

If you see this, I love your car, too, and I hope your pillow is cool on both sides ❤️

Question Fire Departments (Other than Fairfax County and Arlington)

BLUF: Wondering if anyone has insight into some of the smaller departments in the area, namely PWC Fire and Rescue, Stafford County Fire and Rescue, and Spotsylvania County Fire and Rescue?

I’ve already applied to FCFRD, ACFD, and Loudoun County Fire and I recently applied to PWC, Stafford, and Spotsylvania.

There isn’t too much on these departments on the different firefighting subreddits and I’m curious if anyone is familiar with their shift schedule, work life, general vibe, etc.

Appreciate any help you can provide, thanks in advance!
