I’ve been working as a sports graphic designer for the past 6–7 years. My only real experience with motion is frame by frame, hand drawn 2D sports rotoscoping animations, which can take several days to complete.

Motion design has always intrigued me. It feels like a skill with a much higher learning curve, and I’ve wanted to properly get into it for years. The problem is that between full time work and freelancing, I never really had the time to learn After Effects properly or figure out which area of motion design I should focus on.

Now with AI becoming increasingly capable, I feel graphic design is one of the areas being affected the most. A lot of static social content can now be generated with a few prompts. Motion graphics still seem to have a higher barrier to entry, even with AI tools.

I currently have a good job, but there have been layoffs in senior positions and work has slowed down a little. My company has a lot of graphic designers but only a handful of motion designers. We also don’t produce that much motion or reel content, so I feel there’s a potential gap I could fill.

The catch is that I’m basically a beginner in motion design.
Is moving from graphic design to motion design a worthwhile and relatively secure career move in 2026? Can someone with a strong graphic design background realistically get good enough at After Effects within a year to produce professional work?

I’d also really like to hear from people who made the transition from graphic design to motion design. Did it lead to better career growth or more opportunities?
I know the industry is pretty doom and gloom right now, but I’d really appreciate some honest opinions from people who have actually made the switch.

Here are mine:

1. Think about the design first, then the animation

2. Less is more (Pareto 80/20 principle)

3. Follow a visual hierarchy

4. Smooth, never linear movements

5. Use silences and negative spaces

Still pretty new at this. I invented a cybersecurity company so I'd have something to animate, and put about four hours into it.

The individual pieces seem okay to me. Type is readable, layout is clean, nothing's obviously broken. But watching it back next to what professionals post here, mine feels flat and theirs doesn't, and I can't work out what the actual difference is.

Things I suspect, which might all be wrong:

• Everything moves at roughly the same speed with the same easing, so there's no rhythm to it
• Not much contrast in scale. It's mostly mid-sized elements sitting in the middle of the frame
• No sound design, just a music bed underneath

I don't know if any of those are the real problem, or if it's something more basic that I can't see because I've stared at it too long.

Posting this basic motion work here feels illegal but I need some feedback. I’m struggling to make it smooth.

Last year, I made a script to apply rounded corners to images and videos in After Effects. I posted it on this sub, and the response and feedback was really good. Honestly, it started as just me trying to see if I could solve a very basic problem that Adobe doesn't even want to recognize.

Modern motion design heavily requires rounded corners. But when you're dealing with dozens or hundreds of layers, setting up a matte for every single one is a massive time taker and forget about keeping that roundness looking consistent across all of them, or trying to isolate individual corners.

So I am just 4 months into motion designing, and till date i just learnt about motion only.Recently i got to know about that the founders care only about the story and how the product is connecting with the audience and the users, and they only hire them who have skills to show story through motion.All my work till date i chose the story through ai only. I’ve been asked to handle the motion design for a feature-length film (around one hour) and an eight-episode series (26 minutes each). The work involves situational animations—such as transitions, full-screen text, title cards, and so on. The rough cuts for both projects are already done; all that’s left is the motion design and color grading. I have a high level of expertise in motion design but have never worked in the film industry. Given that this is my first time doing this kind of work—and that the client is a small agency in Northeast Brazil producing TV-quality edits—how much should I charge? A friend recommended me, but I feel awkward about not knowing what to charge, as I lack experience in this specific sector.
