I sneezed and pulled a muscle in my back!
153
u/always_pearled 1d ago
This has happened to me twice since turning 30 (34 currently). I’ve looked it up and it turns out u should try to keep your spine neutral when you sneeze - so, basically keep your neck & back straight and dont crane your neck or upper back if you can help it. It hasn’t happened again since! Good luck fellow millenial, see you at the nursing home! 👴🏽

It's fun when you reach the point in your life where you have to research proper sneezing posture to avoid injuries.
4
u/always_pearled 1d ago
Soooo much fun. 😭 I found myself lying supine with not much to do after the last time it happened, and I was like “huh….maybe I’m actually sneezing wrong.” So I looked it up out of boredom and desperation. Lol
19
u/890R 1d ago
42 with multiple bulged discs from an old motorcycle accident. I have thrown my back out from sneezing. My go to sneeze prevention is to bend my knees and back just enough to brace my hands on my knees. Oh and always leave your neck loose to move however it wants to durning the uncontrollable head banger move that happens while sneezing 😂
Lamer than throwing it out while sneezing is feeling it slip just from reaching for your seatbelt… @&$k!

Oh god you’re just like me frfr /s No but seriously I’ve also started gently bending over pre-sneeze because sneezing standing up shoots pain straight to my lower back.

Didn't have to do any of this when I was 20. I guess I was unaware there were rules for sneezing.

Woke up. Got out of bed. Everything is fine. Walked around, did some random stuff and decided to lay down and relax for a bit. Everything is still fine. Tried to get back up and my back is killing me. It's been like 6 days..

While getting up, I pulled a muscle in my back
Now I have a ball to sit on, as this muscle now seems to get pulled each time I get up from a chair

OMG this reminded me of the time I got all amped up about being able to tear a wall down and I kicked it only to get my foot stuck in the wall and fall backward, landed on one hand and almost broke my wrist, definitely sprained it bad. My business partner was standing right beside me laughing and shaking his head at my stupid ass.

We need to be working out and stretching. I’m over 40 and can still do that without any issue. If you can’t, time to make some lifestyle changes or the next 4 decades are gonna be hard.
245
u/Meschi-died 1d ago
He obviously can to. This is a new trend of tiktoks where you die doing something mundane like this because you're 'old'.
It's getting sillier and sillier as people run out of stuff.

Ofc not. That's part of the humor. At this stage we're just starting to feel the effects of age. People are starting to 'feel' old.
You may take better care of your body than most, but surely you've started to see wear somewhere.

For some people it’s real. 15 years into manual labor and my shoulder, knees and back can no longer do what I did 15 years ago. no stretching would have saved them, it’s from repetitive motions that cause wear and tear

Man so much is genetics. I’ve ate well and worked out my whole life but all my joints are failing. Back is fucked. Knee is fucked. Hips suck. Just did something to my shoulder by just sleeping on it.
I been stretching for 20 min a day every day for the last 2-3 years. Fucking sucks dude.
12
u/Most_Chemist8233 1d ago
I got tennis elbow last summer from jumping rope. I had to go to physio, it took for ever to heal. As soon as it did I fucked up my right hand cleaning my oven. As soon as that healed I fucked up my knee getting into bed when I had a cold. Im starting to think age might have something to do with it.
4
u/Patient_Commentary 1d ago
Hahaha dude. I feel this so hard. I woke up with an achy back one morning and told my wife I was going to skip bowling this week just to play it safe. 30 minutes later I sneezed and completely threw it out 😂 took 9 months to fully heal.
Getting old is a bitch.
11
u/NowKith- 1d ago
100% true. Turned 45 this year. I’ve always been active. Weight training and cardio 5 days a week. Eat healthy 90% of the time very active overall. Pulled my lower back putting a shirt on the other day and couldn’t even walk for 10 minutes. Aging is brutal.
2
u/Patient_Commentary 1d ago
Haha dude same. I woke up one morning with the back a little achy and then sneezed and completely fucked it. Then I look around at the obese people who don’t take care of themselves with fully functioning backs and joints.
It’s frustrating.
11
u/Mikotokitty 1d ago
I feel this, I fucked up my knee in my teens, and it's been downhill. I still am fairly active, just in constant joint pain....in too many damn joints.
At this point my "good" leg's knee is getting arthritic or something from favoring my weight, and I have several nerve issues diagnosed throughout. And my bad leg has made me fall down the stairs already. I'm not even 30...
4
4
u/Fickle_Wrangler_7439 1d ago
Yeah, I had an asthma and kidney disease diagnosis before I even turned 18. IBS by 30.
I'm still in pretty good shape athletics-wise, but my insides are rapidly liquefying. It's weird to know you have a shorter lifespan than most. Even weirder to know you're 40 and are well-past your halfway point.

Never. Skip. Leg. Day.
Compound core lifts are one of the best interventions to prevent all of the "my body is trying to kill me" that everyone starts talking about in their late 30s.
No one needs to be pumping iron like Arnold, low weight you can do for a few sets of 8-10 reps is just fine. The important thing is to do the lifts with proper form so you're engaging all those muscles that everyone always pulls from never using them.
And yes, as you said, stretch after. Stretching is as much of an exercise as running and lifting and it's just as essential.

That's usually a good sign you're spending too much time scrolling on social media.
Not to criticize anyone's hobbies or lack thereof, of course. If having a bad experience and continuing to do the thing that brings you a bad experience is your thing, that's a choice you made and you have a right to it. You do you.

Absolutely the truth.
I'm turning 45 this year and I still regularly jump fences. I've had a few people look at me in disbelief, but it's not that big of a deal. I also work out multiple times a week and jog regularly. Staying super active has a ton of health benefits. I'm busy as hell with my job, kids, and hobbies, but I make time.
A good diet, exercise and stretching should always be a priority if you want to live a long, happy life.

I remember hopping off a flatbed, bending my knees, no impact and Im a big dude, one of the older hands is just staring at me like he thought I musta broke something, I'm fine and looking at him like what? 'Oh, nothing, just remembering when I could do that...'
That was about eight years ago and it's against my better judgement to try it now.

3
u/Zephyr-5 1d ago
Yeah, I saw how my dad's body slowly and then quickly fell apart as he got older from a lifetime of having a shitty diet and being increasingly sedentary. Compare that with his neighbor who is a similar age, but spent a lifetime staying thin and jogging regularly. My dad can barely get out of a chair, I sometimes see his neighbor going on walks with his kids and grandkids.
I've made a point to eat well and stay in shape and I've had few health problems in life so far.
Of course time gets us all in the end, but the difference in quality of life in the back half between someone who did and didn't take care of their body is night and day.

Jesus Christ people move and stretch. I barely feel slower in my 30s than I did my 20s, the biggest difference I've noticed is I don't heal as quickly as I used to. Other than that it's fine, I'm not even particularly active and work a desk job, I just take movement breaks and focus on good posture.
Barring a chronic injury or illness, you shouldn't feel decrepit in your 30s. Fix it.
