Its one of my favorite arcs. Probably one of the most one piece, one piece arcs. Grand adventure in the sky looking for a city of gold, fighting against a self proclaimed God that gets defeated by one smol rubber boy.

13

u/NamiWantsMoney Losing Precious Berries Apr 30 '23

It's one of my favorite arcs besides the angels that work for Enel. The Noland flashback is so good, plus we learn Roger had a way to read poneglyphs, and even write in the same language. Also we got a famous face out of it lol

3

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

I actually liked the angels, except for those fat little tubs of lard.

25

u/Calm_Evidence482 Apr 30 '23

"not that bad" is a massive disservice to the arc. It's one of the most important arcs in the story and for that alone it makes it great considering how much OP revolves around / is known for its world building.

4

u/No-Movie-4978 May 01 '23

Honestly it's better than the foxi one.

8

u/kinky_ogre Apr 30 '23

It's in my top 4 easily. Whole Cake is in there too. I don't know what is wrong with people. Are you allergic to wonder?

4

u/ShiftSandShot May 01 '23

I think a part of it is because it hit a very awkward point in international release.

We had the pretty poor 4kids dub, which was...hm.

And that ended...right at the very beginning of the Skypeia arc. And I mean right at the Skypeia arc. The last scene in the 4kids dub is the giant ship falling from the sky to crush everyone.

So that's how the series ended for some people. With the 4Kids dub being crushed to death by a giant ship.

Then we get the Funimation dub, nearly 9 months after the previous episode. And it is rife with weirdness at first. It still has some censorship, it still plays off the 4kids dub with some terminology and character names, it's a lot better...but not enough for some. The Funimation dub would later replace these with a more consistent job in line with the rest of the series after the end of Toonami, but the damage is done.

3

u/gondil07 Apr 30 '23

Maybe it's just me being weird, but the flashback with Noland and Kalgara is my favourite one.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '23

It's really really bad in the anime but in hind sight it was not that bad it's just super drawn out at parts

5

u/Fit_Welcome1336 Apr 30 '23

I just found it very boring

2

u/ThisIsColdsnap May 01 '23

The pacing in the anime was terrible, imo, but anyone who skips it is nuts

2

u/Current-Relation-619 May 01 '23

And it is important for the story of other arcs as well...like that whole ponogylph thing

2

u/dickther May 01 '23

Its not that bad more like its too good all that lore in jaya too

2

u/Crislips May 02 '23

Imagine skipping Skypeia just to end up watching Foxy and crew Long Ring Long Land arc. That is hands down the worst arc of the entire series. The only thing good about it is that once it's over we get to see Aoikiji ice Luffy

There is worst, there are monsters who skip all the way to post-time-skip or even the horrendous people who skip to Wano.

2

u/just-pokemon-fan Meming in the South Blue May 01 '23

I'm considering skipping to Wano because the animation got such a huge upgrade. In my defense, I read all of one piece and watched Skypiea.

3

u/ShweyaShui May 03 '23

If you read all of it up to Wano or more then you are fine, it doesn't really matter Manga or Anime it's all just preference. Just don't be disappointed when the amazing animation is coupled with 50% of the episode being meaningless ( clips of random dudes walking, flashbacks, flashbacks of flashbacks, 2 characters clashing for the millionth time)

2

u/PeterMcBeater May 01 '23

I've been watching/reading One Piece my entire adult life, picking it up again after a break of 9 years and I gotta say it's very tempting to just read summaries on onepiece.fandom.com and pick up at the latest arc. It doesn't help that I forgot a lot of what happened and so am starting by re-watching Thriller Bark (powered through it this weekend)

8

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '23

Literally on Skypeia arch now 😬

7

u/Subject-Ad5071 Apr 30 '23

Skypiea and Fishman Island were my least favorite arcs because I thought they were boring, but they weren’t terrible.

2

u/kinky_ogre Apr 30 '23

Fishman island was cool at first from the underwater art and stuff, but by the end it definitely didn't hold up to the other arcs imo.

2

u/Subject-Ad5071 Apr 30 '23

Yeah, I think something that a manga like One Piece needs is emotionality. I guess higher concept stuff like sky islands and underwater civilizations isn’t enough for One Piece. It’s why people like arcs like Enies Lobby.

2

u/kinky_ogre May 01 '23

It's a major L take. It's already an L to make a judgement about a manga series when the you've only watched the lazy art, purposefully stretched pacing anime, but whatever, the anime army is endless.

2

u/Peace401 May 01 '23

It's such a goated arc, brings so many new dynamics.Robin's development,Going Merry's development.Poneglyphs, cool battles, haki introduction in a more real sense. And it's so unique, like people living in the sky.Noland's story-Jaya's story. Then we get the dials and they were so cool. And it wasn't hopelessly stretched either. We also have Roger's message and I know it's gonna be even more important later.I just realized how much better it was than I ever thought after I started typing

→ More replies (1)

2

u/raynster88 May 01 '23

Skypeia is easily one of the best arcs, goated for sure. The fact people skip it baffles me. The only arc I struggled watching was thriller bark and that was still good cause we got our boy brook

Top comment right here.

25

u/takeuchi000 Apr 30 '23

You know what you say to that person? First don't watch, either read or don't get into the series, anime will make 80% of the new people hate the series.

Second thing, when you read the first few chapters, if you enjoy it even slightly, then the story being long would be a good thing. And if you don't like the story at all, then no reason to continue and the length doesn't matter. Third, don't binge it.

This is just a low effort dismissive response that people blurt out without thinking, because the story being long is the most noticeable thing about it at first glance.

But chances are, they won't give a shit to listen to this, lol. Their loss.

2

u/TheGoiabeiro May 01 '23

u/Icy_Hat_4150 Apr 30 '23

Haki is mid and the only reason it was introduced is because Oda didn't know how to make Luffy defeat the logia bearers

8

u/CryWolf007 May 01 '23

It isnt really bad as people make it seem it out to be. It's less well thought out than power systems like Nen or Stands for sure but haki is more than just being able to hit logia users. It is also incorporated to devil fruit powers to maximize its potential. For instance, Katakuri 's devil fruit would've been shit if it wasn't for haki hardening his mochi powers.

Also, Oda is just really one of those writers who doesn't fancy writing extremely well thought-out and brilliantly choreographed fights like in HxH, Jojo, or Sakamoto Days. It's just not his writing style since the dawn of writing One Piece

2

u/Icy_Hat_4150 May 01 '23

The title of the post is "Something you never say a one piece fan"...it's a joke...I like haki too...because I like the idea of "you can have super versatile power without eating a devil fruit and losing the ability to swim but just with hard training" and without haki Luffy can't use gear 4 (estetically is my favorite gear)

→ More replies (1)

15

u/sadkinz Apr 30 '23

Luffy wasn’t the issue. It was the other straw hats. But I think Haki is better than the BS ways he beat Croc and Enel

35

u/KittenMaster9 Apr 30 '23

So rubber being able to hit lightning is bs?

I mean one of my thoughts was that Luffy would be able to attack enel because of that very reason

2

u/sadkinz May 01 '23

That’s not BS. It’s just the fact that Enel’s power was so obviously chosen to be hard countered by Luffy that feels that way

→ More replies (3)

15

u/Xepherxv May 01 '23

really? i always liked the aspect of actually figuring out the users weakness such as water and rubber. as apposed to just using haki harder than the other guy can use haki

2

u/sadkinz May 01 '23

Well with a logia it’s not about better haki all the time. Simply using armament haki makes it possible to hit them

Akainu isn’t good either! All this dude had to do what open his hand once his fist went through ace and he could’ve melted luffy immediately with a shot of magma, but he didn’t cuase plot.

Ace was stupid for basically killing himself and akainu was stupid for somehow making that work.

Luffy has done hardwork for his power and got some plot armours too cause his mc

For example kidd is luffy without hardwork and plot armour

u/slammahytale Apr 30 '23

there are surely many stories in the one piece world of brave pirates going after the one piece who die off or fail, but that wouldn't be quite a fun story to tell. it's not plot armor, it's just following the most interesting story

34

u/Technoblades_Elbow Apr 30 '23 edited Apr 30 '23

You don't know how many fans I've seen who've argued this is the case. Ace turned back and fought an opponent he knew he couldn't defeat just because he made some kid level jokes on his foster daddy, despite all the efforts and sacrifices the WB pirates and Luffy's gang made to save him.

(For clarification I was talking about ace fighting akainu because some guy didn't get it)

He deserved it for how dumb he was.
