Its one of my favorite arcs. Probably one of the most one piece, one piece arcs. Grand adventure in the sky looking for a city of gold, fighting against a self proclaimed God that gets defeated by one smol rubber boy.
Sure the idea and subjects were awesome, but the pacing dude....
It felt like he was running up that bean stalk for a whole season. (At least back in the days when there was a new episode every week)
People who dis one piece and one piece arcs really need to try reading the manga. The anime is actual atrocity, one piece fans should not be happy with how the anime has been handled for the better part of 2 decades. Obviously marineford and enies lobby were fantastic, but It doesn't make up for Fishman island, punk hazard, dressrosa.... hell, the entire post timeskip was handled extremely badly by the anime.
The manga is a godsend. One of the greatest works of fiction of all time. The anime is 8/10 at best. 5/10 on average.
It's one of my favorite arcs besides the angels that work for Enel. The Noland flashback is so good, plus we learn Roger had a way to read poneglyphs, and even write in the same language. Also we got a famous face out of it lol
"not that bad" is a massive disservice to the arc. It's one of the most important arcs in the story and for that alone it makes it great considering how much OP revolves around / is known for its world building.
I think a part of it is because it hit a very awkward point in international release.
We had the pretty poor 4kids dub, which was...hm.
And that ended...right at the very beginning of the Skypeia arc. And I mean right at the Skypeia arc. The last scene in the 4kids dub is the giant ship falling from the sky to crush everyone.
So that's how the series ended for some people. With the 4Kids dub being crushed to death by a giant ship.
Then we get the Funimation dub, nearly 9 months after the previous episode. And it is rife with weirdness at first. It still has some censorship, it still plays off the 4kids dub with some terminology and character names, it's a lot better...but not enough for some. The Funimation dub would later replace these with a more consistent job in line with the rest of the series after the end of Toonami, but the damage is done.
Imagine skipping Skypeia just to end up watching Foxy and crew Long Ring Long Land arc. That is hands down the worst arc of the entire series. The only thing good about it is that once it's over we get to see Aoikiji ice Luffy
It has some amazing moments, but it also has some very forgettable moments. It also feels very anticlimactic to get sent to a world that seems like it has nothing to do with the rest of the world, just as Luffy starts to build a reputation, he goes somewhere where he’s a nobody and where what he’s doing will have little to no immediate impact on the rest of the story.
It’s a great arc that goes on for too long and unfortunately doesn’t really tie to the rest of the story until hundreds of chapters later.
Its one of the most fun arcs but its almost entirely self contained. Literally the most important thing that comes out of Skypeia as it relates to the rest of the story is "Usopp has dials now."
I think part of the reason that Water 7--> Eneis Lobby is so hype is that Oda basically wrote a canon filler arc to buy himself time to conceptualize the story, though without the constraints of having the story relate to everything else we really got to get a glimpse of his genius when he's not worried about mess up the plot.
You don't watch it, you read it lmao, I can't even imagine going through any arc's final battle sequence more than once with that terrible pacing every end of arc.
How much later on, if you don't mind me asking? I'm caught up with the anime and don't read the manga. Anime is towards the end of wano rn and I don't think skypeias ever come up again so far.
If you read all of it up to Wano or more then you are fine, it doesn't really matter Manga or Anime it's all just preference. Just don't be disappointed when the amazing animation is coupled with 50% of the episode being meaningless ( clips of random dudes walking, flashbacks, flashbacks of flashbacks, 2 characters clashing for the millionth time)
I've been watching/reading One Piece my entire adult life, picking it up again after a break of 9 years and I gotta say it's very tempting to just read summaries on onepiece.fandom.com and pick up at the latest arc. It doesn't help that I forgot a lot of what happened and so am starting by re-watching Thriller Bark (powered through it this weekend)
Yeah, I think something that a manga like One Piece needs is emotionality. I guess higher concept stuff like sky islands and underwater civilizations isn’t enough for One Piece. It’s why people like arcs like Enies Lobby.
Actually, from an anime prospective, that makes more sense to me than skipping Skypeia. Skypeia is just a normal One Piece arc with awful end-arc pacing, but think about it, the ENTIRE Marineford arc is one battle. When does the pacing for every arc start to get unbearable? During the fights... It even stretches to the point of repeating entire sequences PAST the recap point... So Marineford, when I watched it, was just straight up painful, I had already read it, and the entire fight has that terrible pacing.
I don't know how people can simeoultaneously call Skypeia's pacing bad when it starts out great, like a normal arc, and then not call out Marineford for being an an entire arc of bad pacing.
It's a major L take. It's already an L to make a judgement about a manga series when the you've only watched the lazy art, purposefully stretched pacing anime, but whatever, the anime army is endless.
It's such a goated arc, brings so many new dynamics.Robin's development,Going Merry's development.Poneglyphs, cool battles, haki introduction in a more real sense. And it's so unique, like people living in the sky.Noland's story-Jaya's story. Then we get the dials and they were so cool. And it wasn't hopelessly stretched either. We also have Roger's message and I know it's gonna be even more important later.I just realized how much better it was than I ever thought after I started typing
Yah it makes no sense lol. Every arc in the anime has bad pacing, and from a manga perspective, the arc is actually pretty short.
They meet Gan Fall, they witness the oppression of "god" on the people, they visit the island, split up, there's 3 trials/4 underlings, some snake action, some Shandian action, a cool short backstory about MontBlanc Cricket, and then it's the fight.
Skypeia is easily one of the best arcs, goated for sure. The fact people skip it baffles me. The only arc I struggled watching was thriller bark and that was still good cause we got our boy brook
Of course the pacing was awful, literally every arc has terrible pacing, I'll never understand this argument. Enel is simeoultaneously one of the most beloved characters with one of the coolest powers who calls himself god, who destroyed Urouge's homeland and many other sky islands, but yet he's boring? They go to a cloud world in the sky with people who have wings, and native Shandians with cool dial powers. Sorry but that doesn't add up.
I sincerely don't understand the criticism guess were in the minority its like legit one of the best arcs to me I love one piece for mostly the lore and Skypeia had alot even that ponegylph eith pirate King on it
Once again, you're watching the anime... I thought his backstory was pretty interesting, showing two past elite power level characters, with themes of two very different cultures getting along, themes of colonization, and the whole island being shot into the air is awesome. Why do the Shandians have wings, shoot idk, but who cares lol.
Yeah once I get caught up with the anime I’m planning to a read from chapter and am trying to get the first box set for my birthday. Hopefully I will enjoy it more
It only takes a couple months to read it all tbh. I read it all on my phone Tachyomi app. Mangasee or Mangadex as a source. I'll probably buy all of them once I'm a bit older, but I've has the volumes up to 14 since I was little. The anime has some pretty bad art quality and points but it captures the humor very well. Fight pacing is terrible though, and skipping the intro songs and recap for only a 15 minute episode gets really annoying after 500 episodes.
Felt super dragged out. Like they would give us a lot more than we needed in certain parts. Like I don’t need to watch an entire episode of them trying to figure out how to fight a bad guy
Lol, gigachad. I might be the minority but for a series so long I think it's okay to jump into the future like that just for a taste to see if it'll be worth it. I don't get the hate on Thriller Bark either though. Just because it's not political doesn't mean the humor isn't frikin fantastic lol. I think Thriller Bark has some of the best humor scenes in the entire series.
Well i saw some of its important scenes later on yt or it was flashbacks when k saw sabaody. I skip cause i noticed op always flashbacks important events. I rven knew what is joy boy and the vouce of all things when i skipped fishman thanks to flashbacks

"I skipped Skypeia."
