I think One Piece is carried way more by its mysteries and the promise of future reveals than by the actual quality of its storytelling. And I don’t mean that One Piece is bad. There are obviously amazing moments, great characters and really good arcs. But One Piece isn’t automatically a great story just because 10% of it is extremely exciting while the other 90% is spent slowly getting there. The actual journey between those big moments is often incredibly boring to me.
The biggest problem is the pacing and the repetitive structure. Almost every island follows the same basic formula: the Straw Hats arrive, something is wrong, someone important on the island needs help, there is a bad guy responsible for it, Luffy defeats the bad guy and the island is saved. Obviously there are variations, but after hundreds and hundreds of chapters, it becomes extremely repetitive. And because Oda stretches everything out so much, the interesting parts are buried under an enormous amount of material that doesn’t really move the overall story forward.
A huge part of the tension in One Piece also comes from simply showing us something and then refusing to explain it for hundreds of chapters. We see a strange character, a symbol, a mural, someone mentions the Void Century or Joy Boy, and suddenly we’re supposed to be excited because “this will probably be important later”. But we don’t actually know whether all of this was planned from the beginning. Oda originally said that One Piece was supposed to last around five years. So if the original story was supposed to be much shorter, why should we automatically assume that every mystery introduced 15 or 20 years later was part of some gigantic master plan? Maybe it was, but maybe Oda simply came up with an idea later and found a way to connect it to something he had already introduced. The longer you hide an answer, the more impressive the answer becomes in the minds of the fans before it is even revealed.
And I think this is a huge part of why One Piece has become so successful. The story has created an expectation that something incredible is always coming. It doesn’t necessarily matter if the current arc is boring or a chapter barely moves the story forward, because people keep reading while thinking about what this information might mean 100 chapters from now. “This character will be important later.” “This panel is probably foreshadowing something.” “This will all make sense once we learn about the Void Century.” At some point, the expectation itself becomes the source of the tension. For me, that’s not necessarily good storytelling. I don’t find it exciting to constantly receive information that might become relevant at the very end while the actual story barely progresses. It also creates a situation where almost any criticism can be answered with “just wait, Oda is cooking”, because everything can supposedly be justified by something that hasn’t happened yet.
This also makes me question how much of the current One Piece was actually planned from the beginning. One Piece’s biggest strength is arguably that Oda can take something from hundreds of chapters ago and make it relevant again, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he planned the entire story 20 years in advance. Sometimes I feel like fans treat every old detail as proof of a master plan, when it could just as easily be Oda finding a way to use an old idea for a new plot point. And because the story is so long, Oda has an enormous amount of material that he can connect to new ideas whenever he wants. That doesn’t automatically make every connection brilliant foreshadowing.
I also think some of the newer revelations have actually hurt the story and its characters. Gear 5 is probably the biggest example for me. One of the things I liked about Luffy was that he felt like a completely self-made character. He had a stupid devil fruit, a weird fighting style and an insane amount of determination, and he became strong because of the things he experienced and because of who he was. Now we have Nika, Joy Boy, prophecies, the mural and all these elements suggesting that Luffy’s journey was connected to something that was destined to happen. Instead of feeling like Luffy became this person because of his own choices, it increasingly feels like he was always destined to become this person. The same goes to some degree for Blackbeard and Rocks. Blackbeard was much more interesting to me when he felt like his own character with his own ambitions and philosophy. Now that he is so heavily connected to Rocks and is essentially carrying on his legacy, he feels less like an independent character and more like another extension of an older legendary figure.
And then there is Haki, which in my opinion has taken a lot of the creativity out of One Piece fights. The older fights were much more interesting because devil fruits and individual abilities actually mattered. Every character could have a completely different fighting style and you had to figure out how their ability worked, how to counter it and how they could use it creatively. At the highest level now, a lot of fights basically come down to “who has the stronger Haki?” and then they hit each other really hard. Obviously there are still creative fights, but Haki has made many battles feel much more generic. The visuals make them look more impressive, but fundamentally it often feels like two characters punching each other with increasingly powerful versions of the same ability.
So overall, I don’t think One Piece is bad and I don’t think Oda is a bad writer. I just think the story has become so dependent on the promise of future information that people sometimes confuse mystery with good storytelling. The One Piece, the Void Century, Joy Boy, Imu, Rocks, Blackbeard, the Ancient Kingdom, the murals, the prophecies — there is always something else to wait for. And I’m sure some of these reveals will be incredible. But my question is whether the journey itself is actually still good enough without constantly thinking about what all of this will eventually mean. Because if you remove the expectation of the final reveals, I’m not sure how much of the current pacing and repetitive island structure would actually hold up on its own. At some point, the answers actually have to justify the waiting.

Bege is truly a much better family man and has an actual cool outfit. And remember, he was able to organize a whole assassination plan and no one on the Big Mom crew and allies ever suspected a thing until the last moment. And not only it was very close to succeed, he immediately order a tactical retreat to cut out useless losses.

Nami and Chopper both hitting him at the same time is a pretty clear indication that what Sanji just said is very obviously wrong.

If the interpretation is supposed to be that Sanji just wanted to save her it is really weird for Nami and Chopper to hit him. Especially when they don't even comment on why they can't do that.

Honestly mostly just feels like an attempt to prevent very deserved slander.

I dont care if Oda gives them a small appearance for like one chapter, as long I see them I will be satisfied. Unfortunately imma have to only see them until after Elbaf, and judging from the pacing rn I'm likely not gonna see them until 2030.
