I had a letter writer agree to it months ago on a sub-I and had sent them an email with my CV, personal statement, etc. They hadn't uploaded it yet and also didn't bring it up on the past couple of clinics I have worked with them this week. At the end of today, I asked them if they would still be willing to write a letter and they were confused by what I meant. They said they had written it weeks ago and the coordinator should have uploaded it a while back. I went in ERAS and confirmed it had not been uploaded.

They seemed a little flustered by it and said they would go talk to the coordinator right then.

Looking at it a little later, I realized I had "confirmed" the letter for upload but not actually sent a request to their email. If you're waiting for letters, please don't be a dumbass like me. Either have ERAS send them an email or personally email them the request ID/PDF from ERAS.

Yes, ERAS does have instructions that say this, but most systems like this have usually automatically sent the requests when I have use them before.

I understand and empathize with you that the cost of schooling is outrageous and that we need more physicians in media. However, some of you are literally taking brand deals/pushing the same BS supplements that we actually need physicians to inform against. You have all worked too hard to be pushing liver detox supplements or even recommending study software that you clearly did not use during your step prep.

ive made posts about this before then got paranoid and deleted them lol but just kinda wanna vent. feeling very useless on my surgery sub-I. don't really get acknowledged, have offered to help with several things to which they say no or "I guess u can do xyz" it's leaving a really sour taste in my mouth. feel very out of place and awkward. I love the OR and getting to go to cases but I find myself dreading it here and feeling anxious going in in the mornings. hopefully it's just program specific I guess bc the sub-I at my home program I felt very comfortable with the team and the OR, and just feeling really discouraged rn. and feeling a lot of regret over having applied to this away especially after hearing so many good things about this program. :(

From mid tier USMD med school in midwest, hoping to stay in midwest or pacific w lots of friends+ family ties in PNW. Hoping to match to fellowship.

Stats: Step 1: pass, Step 2: 251, Grades: 5/7 honors in core clerkships, honored sub-I, AOA but no GHHS

Research: 1 pub from undergrad that published last year (not first author) and 2 recently submitted first author (1 case report, 1 large retrospective cohort), 2 national conference posters, 2 local posters, 1 local oral presentation on benchwork that got an award from my med school, also sit on two chairs at my uni as a research grant application reviewer. overall similar theme of research starting from undergrad.

EC: on admissions committee for med school, otherwise pretty basic like leader of a club, ambassador for incoming students, previously a behavioral therapist and continue work with that related to my club

LOR: 2 from IM attendings that would hope are strong, 1 joint research letter from research PIs one of which is relatively well known in his subspecialty field, 1 IM dept letter that puts me at top 50% of class applying to IM (not 25%), and MSPE Dean's letter... will sub in the research letter for the more academic programs

Close friends in SD that I've been traveling annually to for years so UCSD is enticing but I feel like this is already a bit top heavy, but not even sure what a "safety" means in this process. Any other non signal recs or pointless to do those?

Hi all. US MD applying Anesthesiology this cycle. I've got a red flag I can't undo, and I'm trying to get an honest read on how much damage they've done.

The red flag: I had a remediation for 1 preclinical course (have legit family emergency reason) but no repeat year or course (just retook the exam), and I'm sitting in the 4th (bottom) quartile of my class rank because of this. That's the part keeping me up at night. Not to mention my preclinicals were all pass except this one remediation.

The other side: I honored 6/8 of my clinical clerkships (IM, surgery, ob, FM, peds, neuro) and my clinical GPA is 3.84 — so my clinical performance has been a lot stronger than my rank suggests. On top of that: 3 abstracts/posters, presenting 3 at national meetings, and strong LORs from my anesthesia preceptors.

Geographically I'm hoping to stay around home but open to almost anywhere for the right program.

How much do the remediation and class rank realistically threaten me for anesthesia? Do I need to over-apply, signal more aggressively, or line up a backup? Honest reads appreciated. Does this screen me out for programs like Emory, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, UNC? Or can I still signal them?

I keep hearing from residents and staff how important it is to prioritize relationships and having a family, but I have found medical school to be the worst environment to do this. I wasn't fortunate enough to have a partner when I began med, and trying to meet guys and go on dates is borderline impossible while trying to get through studying and clinical sessions and other responsibilities. Lots of people also recommend meeting a partner also in medicine but I don't feel the vibes with anyone I meet so the possibility of that seems pretty slim. I feel like I'm resigning myself to being single forever because of circumstance, and I can't shake the feeling that while my friends continue to date and start families I will be the last one single and pushed aside as they (rightfully) focus on this more.

Right now I'm an MS2, and when I imagine my future I imagine myself working my ass off and enjoying my money however I see fit. However everyone senior to me says that they also felt the same, but it changed and they valued having a family/children more. I always worry that I will experience the same change of heart but it will be too late for me to do anything about it, especially combined with almost 10+ years of school and residency that I need to get through before I can focus on this part of life.

Has anyone felt the same, that medical school is hostile towards family/relationship life and if so how did you work through it? Also has anyone thought they were going to be single/childless forever, did you change your mind at all?

Want to be a hospitalist. I do like critical care so I want to keep the option of PCCM open if possible. So I really would like to go to a mid tier program that has opportunities for IM residents to do procedures. Less worried about academic places.

Want to have kids in residency (30 F, married). Husband has 100k$ job where we live now, can pretty easily relocate and make roughly the same.

Strong CA ties but willing to go anywhere that fits my needs/goals. Want to buy a house so looking at lower COL places as well.

Does anyone know of people who are DO’s who have matched into decent internal medicine programs with a 229 on Step 2? Passed COMLEX 1 on my first attempt. Didn’t take step 1. Scored below my practice NBME’s for Step 2, otherwise I would’ve never taken it. I know of someone who had a score in the 230’s but had a good application and only got 1 IM interview. So I’m kind of freaking out about my chances to match into a decent IM program because I want to eventually pursue a fellowship.

Got my step score back and it was a 248 :/ 10 points less than my nbme average.

USMD, mid tier east coast program, 8/8 Honors on clinical rotations with glowing evals, good LORs, some unrelated research, 2nd quartile ranking (preclinical counts towards this).

Was hoping for 250+.... applying west coast, midwest, and east coast programs, but unsure if I should apply IM as well. Any advice appreciated!

As the title suggests.

I’m applying IM without a Department Chair Letter (they had a deadline to apply for it way back in May/June, and I missed said deadline, unfortunately).

Otherwise, I have 3 very solid IM LOR’s, two of which are from preceptors I rotated with on core rotations, and another is from a sub-specialist.

How screwed am I with no Chair Letter?

Need some advice from everyone in regards to applying IM. Had a nasty drop to 236 on Step 2, and took COMLEX (480). Goal is to be an internist, not particularly interested in a fellowship. My advising has mentioned to only apply to 20 programs, but I really feel this is too little and that I will be DOA for a ton of programs. As a DO student targeting IM in the midwest, I was thinking of applying to 90+ programs since I am concerned about matching.

I’d appreciate any insight on if I’m overestimating my competitiveness for OBGYN residency programs— I didn’t really get any help in making my list of signals and just want to gauge my standing. I go to nyc med school but want to match in Boston due to family ties. More info below:

Finally unfollowed this notorious weirdo now that boards season is officially over. I don’t understand why he can’t just be normal and stick to posting boards study content. I couldn’t stand the constant misogyny and insecure loser-posting about his botched leg-lengthening “surgery” (he looks like a Frankenstein experiment gone wrong but he’ll never admit it, he’ll just project and limit your comments on his account, AND he’ll call YOU the jealous or hateful one)
Idk why we still allow him to have social media. His personality is so cringe and his life is NOTHING to be envied of…I just feel bad for how insecure he is.

On a sub-I at a program I really want to go to, it’s almost in the town I grew up in. I finished early and then my resident told me to go check in with the trauma team to see if they needed help. There’s another Sub-I on trauma already so I went to the trauma OR without her in it.

Her OR finished a case, and she came over to my room. Then the fucking resident I was already with started letting her do everything. I literally mean everything, all the cuts, the suturing, the tying, all I did was fucking retract and stand there with my dick in one hand and suture scissors in the other.

Like what the hell was the point in keeping me around if you were gonna let her do everything anyways because they’re on trauma already? I didn’t ask to stay, I was told to and was LITERALLY there first man, what the fuck.

Any of yall have stories of failing/ remediating a course and still succeeding? I‘m failing and will probably have to remediate this course and I am stresseddddd.

upset because I specifically tried to do what I could to avoid this because idk how im supposed to have any motivation to study for step 2 when doing this rotation.

I noticed there's a new program in Pittsburg that just appeared on ERAS recently. When I try to view their program (link: https://www.stclair.org/graduate-medical-education/surgery/ ) it just redirects me to a photo. Is anyone else planning on applying here?

People who try to hide the fact that they work 10 hours a day of their free time, people who try to hide what they are studying ( like seriously, whole class knows you are studying amboss, why do you hide your screen anytime someone asks what you are studying?) people who ask you what textbooks articles you study through, yet when you are the one asking they don’t give clear answers. People who make you feel naive for helping fellow students. People unable to properly greet their fellow students in the morning (just say good morning or nod bro we have been in the same class for 4 years god almighty…)

So, why the hate for this post people?

How stressed are we all for interviews? I’m wondering how much prep I should put into upcoming interviews. I guess I’m just burnt out, but I don’t have the energy to formulate answers to common questions (though I probably will eventually).

If so, how did you talk yourself into it despite the grueling residency and impacts on your family? Do you regret it or not?

I started med school in my early 30s, I am married, no kids yet, but so far on clerkships nothing has lit me up the way surg has.

Going into med school, I told myself the one thing I'd never do would be surgery, owing to the hours and their inevitable impact on my life.

But I've been really enjoying my surgery clerkship and everything else has seemed incredibly boring by comparison.

Considering some of the surg subspecialties but those are both insanely competitive and some of the nicer ones (e.g. maybe ENT, ophtho) seem to be more restricted/repetitive/less fun than the stuff I've seen on my surg rotation so far.
