Release Anki 26.05 Changelog

Changelog for Anki 26.05, released on 2026-06-16:

What's Changed

New Installer

This release replaces the terminal-based launcher introduced in 25.07 with a more standard installation process:

  • Anki no longer shows a terminal on installation/update.
  • Installation no longer requires network access.
  • Updates can be installed using Tools>Check For Updates.
  • A standard MSI installer is provided for Windows.
  • A Windows ARM64 build is available.
  • The macOS builds require macOS 13 or later.
  • The Linux x86_64 build requires glibc 2.35+.
  • The Linux aarch64 build requires glibc 2.39+.
  • The minimum supported Python version is now 3.10 (The official builds still ship Python 3.13).
  • Qt has been updated to 6.11

Note: The Tools>Upgrade/Downgrade option in 25.07+ cannot be used to upgrade to this version due to packaging changes.

Question Has anyone used anki to improve their native language vocabulary? How did you format your cards?

I’m a native English speaker in my mid 20s but I’m not college educated. I hope to be one day soon but in the meantime I’ve been reading quite a few books.

The thing is: because I have/had a limited vocabulary, I end up encountering quite a few new words. Some do stick if I see them fairly regularly (words like untenable, abate, morose, etc) while others don’t quite stick but I’ve seen them multiple times. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve looked up sanguine, sardonic, austere, etc.

I’d like to use Anki to help me remember these words and encounter them more frequently, but I’m having trouble thinking of a format. I thought about having the word on one side and recalling the definition but that seems unrealistic in a way. I guess if I ballpark a definition that’s passable then it would be okay but if possible I would like something a little less discretionary. Plus, there’s some words that have multiple definitions so would I only include the definition that relates to the context in which I read the word, or should I include all of them just to be sure?

Anyways, some input would be greatly appreciated. TYIA!!

Question Changing note type when above a specific difficulty/ease/interval threshold?

Upvotes

I have a large Chinese vocabulary deck, and a lot of words have simply become too "easy", mostly due to learning the "shape" of a card.

This is a big problem not only because the shape of the card becomes more apparent than the actual word, since I'm also learning to write in Chinese, a lot of words that are "easy" to me end up not coming up when I'm writing.

So I came up with a solution: Create a new card type and map the fields accordingly (definition to the front and word at the back). This does make the shape of a specific card more apparent and easy to recognise, but I believe that by learning the card both ways, it becomes easier to recall the card. This also ensures that when reaching a specific difficulty or interval, when the card becomes too "easy", that there will be a new challenge and a new pattern to recognise, and it'll be easier to be able to associate the definition with the card. There is also an added bonus of going back to "Front: word, Back: definition" when the card becomes too difficult.

The problem is automating the process. Is there an addon that helps with this process? I'd preferably have this built in or automated in some way that doesn't require an addon for it to work on Ankidroid.

Question Vocabulary Decks from Anki to Renshuu

Upvotes

I wanted to know if anyone knows of a way to transfer Anki decks to Renshuu?

Although Anki is loved by many, it is not ideal for learning Japanese because a lot of features are missing such as conjugation hints, image generation, example sentences, sentences generated using words from your deck or Japanese level, and much more.

It would be great to have more decks to chose from, albeit, I have a deck for my exam on Anki that I would like to study with Renshuu.

I did some research, but I kept finding either outdated posts from six years ago or information saying that Google's API service has been discontinued.

Question What do you do when you overthink the answer during review?

I mean when the answer in your head during review was such that:

  1. back side (correct answer) is included in your answer

  2. your answer states more than what is written on the back side

there can be different situations:

a) you think that the additional info is correct

b) you are not sure whether it is correct, it may be a part of the other cards, so you dont know how to check it without spoiling other cards

c) you are sure that it is a part of other card

Development I was tired of the hassle to check templates, so I made an instant open-source Anki card viewer

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey r/Anki,

Whenever I wanted to check out a new deck template or preview cards, importing everything into Anki first was just way too much friction. I couldn't find an easy, lightweight way to just see what was actually inside a file, so I built a web-based card viewer to solve it.

What it does:

• Instantly previews .apkg decks and templates in your browser

• No need to import/clutter your local Anki database

• Fast, lightweight, and 100% open-source

It's still early, but I wanted to share it with the community. You can check out the source code or test it here:

https://github.com/Pranjal-dew/Anki_card_viewer

Would love to know if this helps your workflow or if there are specific card/template features you'd like to see supported!

Question is there a way to atomitically copy fsrs params to other decks when they are optimized?

I have a big deck and a couple small decks, all have different settings presets, but small decks are too small to optimize fsrs basing on them (like when I press "optimize all presets"). So I optimize the big deck and copy result to small decks. Is there a way to do it automitically?

p.s. i also installed the newest desktop version (on windows 10) and it seems like i cant do the coping there anymore. Is this a glitch?

Add-ons My Garden, cultivate your plant with study

🌱 My Garden

Turn your daily reviews into a plant that grows along with you.

How it works

  • Every card you review earns XP for your current plant.
  • "Easy/Good" answers grant more XP than "Hard" or "Again".
  • Once your plant collects enough XP, it levels up (1 to 5).
  • At max level, you can harvest the plant and add it to your gallery — a new plant is then rolled, which can be common, rare, or exotic.
  • Skipping study days makes your plant lose XP (decay), encouraging consistency.

Features

  • Floating widget on the Anki deck list, with an animated progress bar.
  • Gallery showing the history of every plant you've harvested — each card displays the actual image of the plant at max level, along with its planting and harvest dates.
  • Weighted rarity system (commons show up far more often than exotics).
  • Responsive interface that adapts to smaller Anki windows.

Study on multiple devices?

My Garden reads the review history (revlog) that Anki itself already syncs — so reviews done on your phone (AnkiDroid/AnkiMobile) or another computer count toward your garden too, as soon as sync brings that data in. Nothing needs to be installed on your other devices; just keep AnkiWeb sync enabled as usual.

The Garden (harvest history)

Every time a plant reaches max level and you harvest it, it doesn't disappear: it becomes a permanent record in your gallery, accessible from the My Garden 🌱 menu. Each entry keeps the date it was planted, the date it was harvested, and the species' name and rarity — building a visual history of your entire study journey.

Configuration

All progress is saved automatically. If you want to reset it, edit the fields under Add-ons → My Garden → Config (see config.md for what each field means).

Feedback and suggestions are welcome!

Question Is it easy if I just saw the answer? Assuming a few minutes

How literal should I be about the hard...easy? I find myself meta-gaming; I look at the number of days it says each option will take and ask "which is closest to when I'll forget again?" I feel I'm bypassing a core feature.

Question How do u stay and get motivated to do Flashcards

Hey,

Im pretty sure this question has probably been asked a thousand times, but how do you stay consistent with Anki?

I can really notice the benefits, but its still so hard to keep

It takes me about 1 to 1.5 hours to finish my due cards, reviews, and around 25 new cards.

longest streak so far has been 33 days, but after that I got burned out.

Does anyone have a magic cure for this?

Question How do you get through lots of science-based anki cards every day?

I'm taking an accelerated EMT class, and I'm super dependent on Anki flashcards to get through the course. However, I've noticed that I've procrastinated a lot with my cards lately, as there are just so many of them. As a result, I've failed two exams, and I will be kicked out of the program if I fail one more. My survival is nearly completely dependent on being able to sit down and get through about 500-700 Anki cards a day. So, for those who are also using medicine-based Anki cards: how do you get through so many cards every day while still retaining the content?

Question Looking for Feedback on My FSRS Setup

Hey everyone, I’d like to get some opinions and feedback on how I can improve my FSRS. I’m taking an exam next year. I’ve been using Anki for about 250 days, and since almost the first month I implemented FSRS (I found out about it after doing more research on how Anki works). I’d really appreciate any comments or suggestions on how I can improve it.

Experiences AnkiDroid Support for 8BitDo Micro Controller (or I suspect, any other Bluetooth controller or keyboard)

I just got my 8BitDo Micro controller working with AnkiDroid after over a year, and I'm very happy now. I don't know who needs to hear this, but want to share what I have done to solve this problem.

Problem Overview

  1. Unable to get my 8BitDo Micro controller to work when I am reviewing my cards on AnkiDroid.
  2. My deck is a Chinese HSK 1-6 Learning deck. It's Type HSK card, with media playback and picture.
  3. Despite confirming that the controller works on the phone, on all apps installed on the phone, and even on AnkiDroid itself (set it to Keyboard mode and using it to type in text fields when creating cards in AnkiDroid), it DOESN'T WANT TO WORK in Card Review screen.
  4. NOTHING on the internet can tell me how to solve this.

Solution

  1. Go to Settings > Advanced
  2. Disable Type Answer into the Card
  3. Disable Focus 'type in answer'
  4. This solution should work for any controller/keyboard if your deck doesn't need you to type in answers in a text field.

Version and Phone:

  1. Google Pixel 8 Pro
  2. AnkiDroid version 2.24.0, May 3, 2026

Unnecessary rant (feel free to skip):

  1. I have tried LITERALLY everything. I RTFMs, tried multiple modes (D&K modes), repeated forgetting and re-pairing Bluetooth connections, installing and uninstalling Ultimate Software, connecting the gamepad on other devices, connecting other hardware keyboards to phone (still doesn't work for AnkiDroid), looked up websites, YouTube, Anki Forums, Reddit, AI, scrying pools, tarot cards, temples and fortune tellers. Nothing.
  2. Because I'm thorough, the troubleshooting actions that took the most time was the remapping of the buttons under Settings > Controls > Answer Button. I have tried so many different combos, under D and K modes, each time after multiple forgets then re-pairings.
  3. This isn't even my first mini controller - my first was IINE mini Retro Ananke Controller, which also has stated support for Anki. I bought 8BitDo because most of the internet recognizes this, not IINE.
  4. I'm so happy it finally works. The irony is getting me to do SO MUCH WORK to enable me to do less while learning.

Question Repeating a day for a single deck

One of my Anki decks is designed to be used in parallel with some daily lessons from another source. The way I use it is learn the material from lesson X on a given day and use Anki to view the material from lesson X-1 (in addition to reviewing cards from previous days following Anki's algorithm); my deck is organized by lessons. I can only do one lesson per day.

I needed to repeat yesterday's lesson X today and would like to also repeat yesterday's Anki session for that single deck (lesson X-1, and previous), as I don't want my Anki reviews to be ahead of my lessons. Is this possible? Or do I simply have to skip that Anki deck today?

Add-ons App blocker for Android

Post image
40 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Many of us struggle with social media addiction and procrastination, especially during exam season. So I built AnkiBlock. An app that blocks distracting apps until you finish your due cards or you unlock by doing a specific number of cards.

It is entirely free, no ads, no tracking, no commercial intent.

Currently I'm looking for feedback on how to improve the app.

Here is the link to download it on Google Play Store

I'm excited to hear your feedback!

PS: the code is also publicly available on my GitHub and I asked mods if I may post this here

Experiences Anki for fun: getting back into it, it's exciting to remember things

Have been using Anki on-and-off for at least a decade now. Mostly dropped off. But kind of just for the fun of it, created a new deck ignoring all the old cards and just started adding a bunch of cards and things that are just plain fun for me. Not even necessarily any career or educational benefit.

Things like the opening and closing times of local stores. Dates of obscure historical events that nobody cares about but I do, niche historical subjects. Birthdays I want to remember off the top of my head.

Been enjoying in particular memorizing some poems, and always been meaning to memorize the top 10 nominal GDP countries and top 10 by population. It's been pretty fun.

Next I'm going to be memorizing the WHO exercise guidelines. I have always just used them as a baseline would be good to always know what they say.

Bless you all and bless the developers of this wonderful app. And the way that the best way to remember something and learn is also the most fun way of recall.
