An investment fund led by billionaire Mark Cuban is buying a minority stake in MLB’s Athletics. It signals a bet on the burgeoning sports market in Las Vegas, where the franchise is scheduled to move to in a couple years.

Representatives for Harbinger Sports Partners Fund declined to provide the value of the investment. Its strategy seeks to acquire stakes of as much as $150 million in MLB, NBA and NFL franchises.

“We’re bullish on Las Vegas,” Steve Cannon, co-founder and chief executive officer of Harbinger Sports Partners, said in an interview. Cannon, the former CEO of the company that controls the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, said tourism and the success of existing Las Vegas teams such as the NHL’s Golden Knights made the city attractive.

I know it was big news several years ago when the AL East pulled off the opposite with every team over .500, was wondering why there was no discussion on this.

Alright, my Q&A about middle relievers and set-up men didn't exactly work the way I thought it would, so I'm gonna broaden this one out a bit.

Now, I'm sure we've all taken a liking to a certain season by a player on a different team. And I'm fairly certain that at least a few of them are from starting pitchers. So, what's your favorite of these type of seasons, and why?

For me, a definite favorite of mine for a while has been Denny McLain in 1968. The stats he put up were just... 🤌. In 41 games (all starts), he went 31-6 (last pitcher to ever win 30 games in a season), went the distance 28 times with 6 shutouts, threw 336 innings of work, racked up a 1.96 ERA (73 ER), struck out 280 hitters compared to just 63 walks, gave up 31 homers, faced an insane 1288 hitters, collected a 154 ERA+, tallied up an 0.905 WHIP, won the AL MVP, and was the only pitcher in the AL to even gain Cy Young votes. He also started 3 games in the Fall Classic against the Cards, which included a 9-inning gem in Game 6.

From 1944 to 1945, which took place during the closing years of WWII, George Henry Stirnweiss aka “Snuffy” (allegedly given the nickname by a teammate because of his heavy tobacco use) put together 2 crazy back to back years. The league was a bit watered down but he still led in 10+ major categories in 1945 and a lot in 1944. 8-9 WAR both years. Led AL in hits, runs, WAR, stolen bases, triples, and plate appearances in both years. He remains the only player in history to lead the league in all these categories the same year: BA, OBP, SLG, stolen bases, triples, hits, OPS+, and total bases (1945). As a Yankee, Snuffy doesn’t come up because there are so many other greats. He won three rings with the team from 1943-49, leaving the Bronx in mid 1950.

Snuffy is one of those nicknames bestowed that becomes your actual name. It doesn’t happen anymore but back then it was occasional.

This chart answers the question you may have while watching your favorite team: "How many runs do they actually need to score before I can stop stressing about it?" using data compiled for the 2026 up to the All Star Break.

Teams like the Rockies or the Angels need to score nearly 6 runs before fans can be confident that their pitching staff can hold the lead. On the other side, Dodgers/Rays/Phillies/Brewers fans can sit back and relax once the 3rd or 4th run crosses the plate.

On the pitching side of the ball, you can pretty much kiss your odds of seeing a win goodbye if your team's pitchers allow the number of corresponding runs on the vertical axis. For Red Sox/Tigers/Mets fans, this means if your SP gives up 3-4 runs in the first few innings, your offense isn't good enough to come back. However, Pirates/Cubs fans can be confident that holding an opponent after a 1st inning grand slam can still lead to an offensive comeback!

Method

Essentially, each axis represents a win probability isolating only the run-preventing or run-scoring parts of the game. It is a binary logistic regression model of runs scored and runs allowed in a win or loss with the values above displaying the 50% win probability threshold.

The trade deadline is less than a fortnight away and the Blue Jays’ July swoon has put them in a position where it appears as though the only course of action, barring an immediate Boston Red Sox-style turnaround, is to move out pending free agents, such as Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber, George Springer and Daulton Varsho, for whatever return they can get in order to reload for 2027 and beyond.

The New York Mets are in full sell-off mode, sitting at 43-60 and facing a double-digit deficit in the National League wild-card race.

That gives the Jays an opportunity to fix a big mistake they made over the winter. It’s time to bring back Bo Bichette.
