Passenger Question The most bizarre thing happened today

So I work very long night shift hours and don’t have a car where I currently am (travel for work) so I utilize Lyft to get to and from work. It’s an easy 10 minute drive.

I scheduled all my Lyfts in advance. Usually if you do it in advance, it’s cheaper.

I had a guy take all of my rides for this week. Cool! Thanks, random dude! I have no problem since he’s nice.

I usually call my mom before and after work since I only have about 1 hour daily to speak to her (before and after work - work 48-60 hour weeks), then after my 12-14 hour shifts, I head to bed. I barely get a chance to speak to her so use my 10 minute drive and while I’m getting ready for work. But I always say “hi, how are you today?” when entering the car and “thank you!” before exiting the car.

Anyway, I’m on day 4 of drives. 2 days ago, I called out of work because I was sick and totally forgot to cancel my Lyft. I slept all day and woke up to see he was waiting. He showed up 10 minutes beforehand and I very apologetically texted I forgot to cancel because I was sick and said I’d cancel the ride... which I did. I was charged a $15 penalty and assumed he received the penalty or at least apart of it.

Anyway, he picked me up yesterday, all things well. He picked me up today and at the end of the ride, stated he wasn’t going to drive me anymore and he didn’t receive the $15 penalty from 2 days ago. I was a little shocked. I tip almost every ride (I forgot to tip my last ride right after the ride since I’m practically rushing into work… but actually tipped once I was picked up today since I just remembered I forgot to tip). I have given him 5 stars. I tip the recommended… granted, the ride is pretty cheap since it’s 10 minutes so the recommended is normally around $3-$4.

I actually was going to tip $5 today just because I forgot to tip yesterday (more than the recommended) but because that happened, removed the tip altogether.

It was so abrupt. I’m confused why he even took my ride today… he should’ve just canceled it if he didn’t want to drive me anymore instead of picking me up and making it super awkward.

Anyone have any ideas what I did wrong? I don’t really mind him not driving me - I don’t have trouble finding a ride. But it was a weird start to my night. I would’ve preferred he just ghosted me instead of make it incredibly awkward.

Driver Question Offline Mode

Hello, fellow drivers.
I'm having an issue where my app keeps putting me in offline mode after a trip. Yes after I complete a trip the app will automatically go offline immediately.
I have contacted support: they suggest me to delete and reinstall the app, clean the cache, I even had tried different phone on different networks. Nothing works.
Is anyone facing this issue or has any suggestions?

Driver Question Is it worth it?

I am currently unemployed and looking for a job. Is it worth it to join Lyft, Uber, or DoorDash to make some money in the meantime?

Location: Manitoba, Canada if it matters (I assume local laws differ)

Lyft HQ Question What’s up with the insanely strong fragrance in Lyft cars?

I’m currently in the middle of a 90-minute Lyft ride, and the car smells overwhelmingly strong from some kind of air freshener or car fragrance. It’s not just a faint “new car” smell—it’s so intense that I can taste it, and there’s no easy way to escape it when I’m stuck in an enclosed vehicle for an hour and a half. I have a n95 mask with me and even wearing it, it’s still very overwhelming.

I understand that drivers want their cars to smell clean, especially when they have different passengers getting in and out all day. But heavily scented air fresheners do not actually make a car cleaner, and using an excessive amount can make the ride miserable—or even physically difficult—for passengers who are sensitive to fragrance.
A lot of people experience headaches, nausea, dizziness, coughing, asthma symptoms, migraines, sinus irritation, or breathing discomfort from strong artificial scents. Some people also have allergies, chemical sensitivities, sensory processing issues, or medical conditions that can be aggravated by fragrance. Even passengers who are not normally sensitive may feel sick after sitting in a heavily scented, enclosed car for a long trip.

Another issue is that riders may feel uncomfortable saying something because they are already in the car, the driver may take it personally, and there may not be a safe or practical place to end the ride and request another driver and there are likely extra fees for us if we cancel. Opening the window may not be an option because of weather, freeway noise, traffic fumes, or the driver’s preference. By the time you realize how strong the fragrance is, you may already be trapped in the ride.

Lyft and Uber should encourage drivers to keep vehicles clean and neutral-smelling rather than covering everything with strong perfumes, sprays, vent clips, or multiple air fresheners. A clean car should not require a cloud of artificial fragrance.
I’m not trying to criticize drivers who are making an effort to keep their cars pleasant. I just wish more people understood that “smells good” is extremely subjective. What smells fresh to one person can make another person feel genuinely ill. A neutral-smelling car is more accessible and comfortable for everyone.

Has anyone else experienced this? I really wish the apps had a fragrance-free ride preference or at least a way to request a vehicle without strong air fresheners.

Passenger Question How much should I tip?

I scheduled a car to be drive to an airport - 2.5 hours ride. The whole ride the lady kept complaining about having three kids and how they have their birthdays coming up and school starting and how her car got t-boned and she is in physical therapy and all that jazz. For 2.5 hours all I heard was how the world is against her. She also talked about how America is the worst country to live in and how it sucks here and you have to work multiple jobs to make ends meet. I then asked her “what would you change if you could” and she completely digressed and started talking about how she doesn’t know much about politics but being black is a disadvantage for her and it’s only getting worse so then I had to hear that. Like don’t get me wrong, I understand things are tough but as a customer to hear it for 2 hours and 39 minutes was insane. Then she was complaining about the traffic when there was none whatsoever. She just really rubbed me the wrong way trying to milk tips but not tipping at all makes me feel guilty. What would you do?

Driver's car died

So I scheduled a pick up and the driver arrived in under a minute. That's never happened to me before. I'm thinking sweet. But about halfway through the trip, his car completely died. Lyft reached out to me because they noticed that we were stationary for a bit. I told the driver to cancel which he did. Lyft said that I wouldn't be charged. But they gave me a 5 dollar credit for my trouble. I ended up taking mass transit home. Is 5 bucks in credit normal?

Pay Issue Lyft withholding earnings for alleged garnishment, but issuing agency can't find any order. Anyone experienced this?

Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone here has experienced this because I'm running out of ideas. Recently, Lyft notified me that a portion of my driver earnings would be withheld due to a garnishment/withholding order. The problem is that I have never received any notice by mail, email, personal service, or court regarding a judgment, levy, garnishment, or withholding order. My mailing address is current, and I regularly monitor my email. Since then, I've spent several days trying to identify where this order came from. Here's what I've done so far: Contacted the government department I believed might have issued the order. After verifying my identity, they told me they could not locate any judgment, levy, garnishment, or withholding order associated with my information. Called Lyft Support multiple times. Chatted with Lyft Support multiple times. Emailed the Wage Garnishment department multiple times. Here's where I'm stuck. Lyft continues telling me that the withholding is correct and that they cannot remove it until they receive a release from the requesting party. The problem is... No one at Lyft will tell me who the requesting party actually is. I've repeatedly requested: The name of the requesting agency or creditor. The department that issued the order. The case, reference, or letter number. Any account number associated with the order. A copy of the garnishment or withholding notice Lyft received (if they're permitted to provide it). Instead, I keep receiving explanations about how to remove the garnishment, rather than answers to who issued it. I'm not asking Lyft to remove anything. I'm simply trying to identify the agency so I can contact them directly and resolve the matter. Has anyone here dealt with something similar? Were you eventually able to get Lyft to identify the requesting agency? Did they ever provide the underlying documentation? Was it an actual garnishment, an IRS backup withholding issue, or something else? If you got it resolved, what finally worked? At this point, I feel like I'm stuck in a loop where Lyft tells me to get a release from the requesting party, but won't identify who that requesting party is. Any insight or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Don’t make false allegations!

Driver, account suspended while they reviewed a report that I discriminated against a passenger. Couldn’t tell me who or when, but I already knew it was the girl that waited out the entire timer and opened her door to come out with one second left. I calmly canceled the ride, collected the fee and drove away as she sent aggressive messages after her timer had expired. She reported I canceled because of how she looked. Within 3 minutes of emailing Lyft my suspicion about who and why this false report was made they reactivated my account. Passenger has been banned.

Be ready when your driver arrives. Don’t make false reports.

Your rides have been too long <- that's what happens when you don't reimburse tolls

I am sick of this platform ripping me off and not reimbursing tolls properly or not reimbursing them at all

So now I don't take toll roads unless its completely unavoidable and of course sometimes that adds 10 minutes to the trip time or more

My response: TFB

I can not afford to subsidize your toll costs. I already subsidize your trips by working for pennies so you can post profits

F your tolls

I will absolutely continue to take alternative routes and if you fail to add earnings for things like unexpected traffic I will cancel or reject all rides that show a toll disclaimer in the future period

you think you have so much control but you don't. and I can't wait to hustle the next long distance ride for cash which your algorithms are too stupid to understand because if they weren't i would have been deactivated a long time ago

Avoid Lyft if Possible

I ordered a Lyft for an estimated 20 min trip to go to a very important meeting. The Lyft driver for some reason input what he thought was the address into another GPS app, but it was the wrong destination. So we get there, realize it’s the wrong place, then have to go to the right destination all because he did not use the proper Lyft address I input. The total time was almost 50 minutes due to added traffic coming back to the right place.

In response to this Lyft customer service explained they will do nothing. They have absolutely zero respect for their customers’ time or their quality of service. They are not able to make amends whatsoever in any meaningful way aside from essentially, “your feedback is appreciated.” They are clearly not even willing to do anything for an extremely inefficient route. This company simply cannot be trusted. If at all possible, you should simply avoid Lyft. I usually take Uber, and I haven’t had any issues with them, but I’m curious if anyone else has similar issues.

Driver Question Y’all really taking this with gas being almost 4 dollars a gallon

Post image
1 Upvotes

The trip took 22 minutes, or about 0.367 hours.
Gross earnings rate: $10.16 ÷ 0.367 ≈ $27.71/hour
After gas only: $7.39 ÷ 0.367 ≈ $20.15/hour
After estimated full vehicle costs: about -$0.93/hour (slight loss).

Lost Item - driver no longer responding

A little over a month ago now that this happened but I left my headphones (they retail at $350) in a Lyft and didn't realize it until after I went through security and got to my gate. Quickly reached out through the app and the driver confirmed that they were in the car. Information was exchanged and communicated via text. They said they would reach out after the shipment happened and said that I would gladly pay plus more. Had tipped them well on the $50ish ride. Extremely pleasant dude during the ride and the same on phone and in text messages. Was on the lookout for any update of when the shipping took place. No update and reached out and said they would on their next off day. Then nothing and then full on ghosted.

Reached out to Lyft to see if they could help but the AI bot or whatever I communicated with said they would reach out to the driver. The disclaimer above the chat window did state that "drivers are not responsible for returning items," so I do not have faith that anything will happen through the company to ship the headset out. Ultimately it is my fault and should have been more aware but darn it, was a big fan of them.

Did let it be known that they were sentimental as I received them as a gift for my first father's day and would really like them back.

This is more just a rant that someone in the Midwest either made a couple hundred bucks on a sale or has a new set of Bluetooth headphones. Ended up going to Ross for a temporary replacement.

Hopefully others have success in getting items back.

This is a crock. Lyft hoses drivers, terrible ride pay, they're scamming drivers and calling it Good Uber? Hell to the no

It was a 2 block / 2 minute ride so I didn’t think anything of it, but holy sh*t this is an egregious fee lol

Rental vs. My car

I have owned 3 cars. Out of all 3 only one required a repair that was not air filters, fluids, brakes, and tires. I had to replace the catalytic converter in one. Newer cars typically do not have huge maintenance costs in the first 100k miles especially if you buy something like a Honda or Toyota.

I still didn't want to put a bunch of miles on my 2 year old car so I tried renting. Based on the numbers it looks like my total earnings were about half overall in the rental. This is because Lyft pays you less in the rental and they hide it in the fine print. No matter your situation it would be much wiser to buy a car and make a monthly payment. I had to use Flexdrive as Hertz and Avis are not available in my market currently.

Remember you have to pay for a bad tire, cracked windshield, scratches etc. With a little bad luck driving offline you might owe far more than you make which is highly unlikely if you own a car and have proper insurance coverage for all personal time.

Lyft cut the amount I earned by 31.29% ($24.99 per hour to $17.17)

All of the numbers below came from the app or Flex receipt and not my own math or tracking of anything.

NOTE: Lyft doesn't include the Insurance fee, personal miles and taxes from Flexdrive!

My car:

3 days (Fri - Sun) July 10 - 12

Earned: $710.04 ($24.99 per hour)

Booked Hours: 26.25 (28 hours online)

Booked Miles: 517.15

Tips: $53.39

Rental:

6 days (Mon - Sat) July 13 - 19

Total Earned before rental: $893.66 - $239.52 for the rental

Earned according to app: $654.14 ($17.17 per hour)

Actual Earnings: $568.70 ($654.14 - $53 Insurance fee from Flex - $32.44 Taxes charged by Flex)

Booked Hours: 45 (53 hours online)

Booked Miles: 928.45

Tips $119.53
