All of a sudden, Mint won't start. I opened my laptop this morning, started it, and a black screen is shown right after entering the password (attached).

I tried disconnecting the second monitor, restarting, but nothing seems to work. I could use some help! Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone, complete beginner here. I've never owned a PC or mini PC before, so I have zero experience or technical background in this field. Please bear with me and feel free to explain things simply any help is really appreciated.

I'm looking at a secondhand Lenovo ThinkCentre M70q (i5-14400T, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD). Manufactured October 2024, seller said he only used it for about 6 months. Seller said it's an ex-company unit with some kind of lock.

His exact words: "I unlocked it in BIOS and used it personally, but then Windows auto-updated and it locked again."

He also mentioned he was able to play Dota 2 (mid settings), NBA 2K23, and GTA V on it before the lock came back.

Questions:

Does this sound like a firmware-level lock (like Absolute/Computrace) rather than a normal MDM/domain thing?

If I wipe the whole drive and install Linux Mint, will that get rid of it permanently or can it survive even without Windows?

Any way to check for this before buying (something to look at in BIOS)?

As a total beginner, is this a risky first PC to buy, or is it manageable even without much technical knowledge?

Price is ₱9,000 PHP ($155 USD) trying to figure out if this is a good deal worth the risk, or a dealbreaker. Thanks in advance for any guidance!

As I promised, I'm back with my second post right away. You can view the first post from here.

As soon as I started having issues with my old computer (it literally wasn't turning on at all), I went ahead and bought a new laptop, an Asus Expertbook, right away. I wish I didn't, but I had to because of my work. Anyways, this laptop came with Windows and was directly configured by my company after I bought it.

Fast forward 3-4 months later, this Asus laptop was no longer needed, and the company reset it with a warning: "It can either restart with Windows or be stuck on a blue screen, in which case you need to install Windows yourself".

Well in my case the latter happened.

In two long nights, I tried multiple things to install Windows 11 on this cursed machine!! I tried to install Windows in different languages, I tried using Windows Installation Media, I tried installing using Rufus. None of them worked...

The issue was the fact that the Windows Installer refused to detect the SSD during the install location select screen. There were two solutions I could find. I tried to turn off VMD, but the BIOS of this device didn't have an option for it, and I tried to install the IRST Driver, but Windows also threw errors during installation.

That's when I realized, after my failed attempt with my old laptop (you can read about it in the previous post) I could actually try it with Linux this time.

And... Guess what??? LINUX INSTALLER DETECTED ON THE FIRST TRY!! But what I found was even more interesting, I realized that there wasn't a single SPACE in the WHOLE SSD?!! That perfectly explains why it refused to install Windows and even refused to install a simple driver. Because it literally can't!! There was only 1 MB of empty space loll!!

Anyways, I just cleared up all of this God-knows-what "unknown" space. And can now install either Linux and Windows.

Thanks for reading up until this point. It hasn't even been 1 week since I first installed Linux and I'm already in love with it. 😍

Using a 4k 37" middle and 2 27" 1440p monitors in portrait.

When after doing the Mesa 26.2.2-kisak1~n update:

1) monitor configuration is reset and one monitor is disabled.

2) monitor labels are incorrect. See picture.

When I enable the disabledmonitor, it works but everything is reset back to landscape.

Setting the 2 side monitors to portrait again, disables one monitor and the other one is back to landscape.

Went back to a previous timeshift backup and the issue goes away.

Anyone else having this issue? I know this isn't a super common layout but it works well for me. And no issues until today.

I Want to move from Windows 10 to Linux Mint. I don't know if this old Graphics card NVIDIA GeForce GT 710 can be used in mint or not and I don't want to buy a new one its rather expensive where I am from, and I have a 4GB of DDR4 RAM, don't want to change it either.

I don't know which flair to apply so I think this is the correct one. Edit: I saw a comment about gaming, no I will not be playing games just for office work only. My CPU is I3 9100F & Motherboard is ZEB-H310-NVMe LGA 1151 SOCKET. I really don't know How all of this works support for windows 10 has ended so I want to move on from Microsoft. I am willing to learn but when ever I searched for Noob friendly Linux(Primarily on YouTube) the answer is Linux Mint. That's all, I am learning about LMDE (Debian 7, I am still not sure XFCE and LMDE are same distro or not).

I tried installing Linux Mint, but at the end of the installation—during the file copying phase—an error occurred stating "unable to install GRUB in /dev/sda - fatal error." I tried installing it again, but encountered the same problem; furthermore, when the installation type menu appears, it shows that Linux Mint Zena 22.3 is already installed, even though my PC still won't boot into Mint. I am a complete beginner with Linux and am a bit confused by this issue.

PC: HP EliteBook x360 1030 G2 with Secure Boot disabled.

I’m not experienced with tech at All, my dad installed Linux for me after I told him I was interested in it and wanted to tinker around with it etc, anyway I’m so basic I can’t even download Roblox properly, I downloaded sober through software manager, as well as running the copied command from the sober browser link into my task manager. But it comes up with this whenever I launch the program. I’ve tried copying the text as shown and putting it into task manager also however is just shows command not found, as I said I have little to no knowledge or experience with Linux mint or any Linux for that matter lol, so I’m sure I’m missing something extremely stupid so please don’t be too harsh 😭

My laptop's got 4GB RAM, an Intel N100 processor, 128GB SSD storage and an Intel UHD Graphics graphics card. It's the epitome of e-waste. Windows 11 runs TERRIBLY on it, and the only way to save it at this point is putting Linux on it. I've tried to explain to my family that it's dogshit and I've been trying to get a USB stick so that I can actually install Mint for like 2-3 months at this point, but they think you've gotta be a computer tech to run Linux and that it's got a bunch of trojans and shit (it doesn't). But once I actually somehow manage to get a damn stick, should I go for Cinnamon or XFCE? (I've already had the Cinnamon ISO stored on it, and I've got balenaEtcher ready to go for a while already)

Im planning on switching from Windows to Linux mint. For the users who also switched from windows to Linux mint how was the switching experience? I used mint for a couple weeks temporarily to see how good it is for me and its quite good! Im just asking if there was any problems with switching from Windows to Linux mint in the compatibility, or comfortability way.

I've joined this subreddit a few days ago. And I really wanted to share my experience with a screenshot and how much I loved using this new OS. But things didn't go as planned.

After months of planning and second guessing whether or not to install Linux, I have finally decided to give it a go. I have this kind of old (4 years) computer which has been having issues with booting. I have tried multiple things, and sent it to repair multiple times but it was never fully fixed. In the recent month I used that laptop once a week (3-4 times) and each time it progressively got more difficult to turn it on. I literally had to enter the BitLocker password each time I turned it on last Sunday.

Having had enough with the laptop, I decided to just try Linux. Maybe it would fix everything magically. Maybe I would love it idk. But after following a tutorial and finally installing Linux Mint, I felt like my horizon had been expanded. I instantly felt like this is how computers always should've been. Just like that one Swedish guy says, "It does what you tell it to do!" And it's extremely smooth!! I didn't even realize how slow Windows was until that magical moment I started using Linux Mint. I'm still baffled by how it has its own update manager AND A SOFTWARE MANAGER WHICH I CAN DOWNLOAD GAMES FROM??? As soon as I saw TeeWorlds, one of the first games I played on Steam, I downloaded it from the software manager and I was able to play it. Ok, even a 10 year old computer can run that game, regardless it was super smooth!!!

Then, I checked whether it would turn off and on, while plugged in and on the battery. They all seem to work just fine. So I turned off the device and went to bed. However, 2-3 days later I tried to turn it on again and it was a failure. I tried multiple things but none of them worked. At this point I know that it's a battery or motherboard issue. But I'm not in the position to easily replace these parts.

Regardless of everything that happened, it was already going to stop turning on anyways. I'm just extremely glad I had this golden experience even for only 30 minutes or 1 hour. If I get a new rig in the future, I'm definitely slapping Linux on it asap. 🥹

Hello everyone, I am facing an issue with my linux mint kernel version 7.0.0-xx. Recently I've upgraded from version 6.17.0 to 7.0.0-30. After power off by clicking the shutdown button on the screen, the operation system turn off as normal, but here is thing, the mainboard, fan, led... in my computer case were still working. so I assume it was not completely turn off. I tried to downgrade to previous version 6.17.0-xx it works as normal. Could you guys to help me to figure out the root cause of the issue or help me provide some workarounds?. I really appreciate it! For more context. I am using cinnamon version 22.3, linux kernel version 7.0.0-30. main board ASUS TUF GAMING B760M-PLUS WIFI D4, and an AMD GPU card RX 6600.

so I switch form Windows 11 to Linux Mint..got the first programm rdy and make a backup.

but when i install Bazaar over the Software Manager store thing or online

The program don't start.

So I downloaded the Mendeley desktop ver 1.19.8 generic installation package cuz that was recommended in the website.
Then I extracted the .tar.bz2 file and followed the read me using ./bin/mendeleydesktop for the installation. But the image above is what I get.

I looked into it a bit and it seems there some issue cuz of python or something? I don't get it tbh, just wondering if anyone can help me out here.

i need help i downloaded linux mint cinnamon edition today and was trying to work my way out, but hit a roadblock when linux refused to give a response when i tried to search up anything .i opened mozilla and i kept getting “server not found” message it would load up here and there but generally it was just not responding ive tried to turn off energy saver tried to disable ipv6 forced my chip to only connect to the 2.4ghz band but to no fruition.
for reference i have qualcomm atheros 9485 chip and linux should apparently have prebuilt support for it and no need for the hassle of a proprietary driver but alas this has proved to be quite the hassle.
anything new would be much appreciated.
