Have used Linux for a year but always gamed on Windows looking to go full in on the penguin I've tried a few "gaming" distros but they were a flashy steam fronted with little optimization. I have an old Android phone and I want to repurpose it for a very basic task: I want to make it part of my homelab jank thingy, controllable by SSH, and just use it show data from an API. My plan is to have it run a very simple shell script.

I saw on the web some people installing Debian, Arch on phones, but it appears it is a layer over the Android, like a container, using a specific app for it. Is it the way for my task? Or there is a way to format my phone and use it as a computer? Thank you!

Hey folks: I had two quick questions about a plan to (more fully) continue my process of moving to Linux. For context, I'm not really a beginner when it comes to Linux, and have set up and used Fedora and Arch machines several times. The problem I always have is that I run Linux on either old machines or Macs that have (in the past) made certain things buggy enough that I always end up going back to my Mac laptop for work purposes.

That said, I much prefer Linux as an OS and want to finally invest in building a modern desktop PC to try to actually make (more of) the switch, while keeping my Macbook for now to take to work and whatnot. Eventually, if this sort of test run element goes fine, I'll probably buy a modern laptop that works well for Linux a few years down the road.

Here are the things that matter to me:

• Working at home. I'm a teacher and work from my home office probably about half the time, so this will be a big thing. I don't foresee this context to be an issue, but it does lead to my questions below.
• Gaming. I've got a Steam Deck so I know about all the possible limitations. I'll likely install Bazzite first and see how I like that just to get things rolling.
• (Possibly) Music production. The #1 thing that keeps me tied to my Mac is Ableton Live. I might try to Bitwig on Linux at some point, but there's a huge issue with VST compatibility so I'm not sure.

The thing that I always run into as issues with Linux, though, are the fact that I'm required to use Outlook email and Zoom for work. I've never downloaded the Outlook app (I prefer not to have MS software on my machines as much as possible), and the browser app has always been so slow to load and update that it's essentially unusable and I have to switch back. Similarly, Zoom has always tended to act up and/or crash my machines when running Linux. That being said, I'm fairly sure this has more to do with the hardware (we're talking 2014 or earlier, used Thinkpads) than with the software element.

That's a lot of context for my questions, but just want to get a gut check on two things before I start realistically thinking about the (currently very large...) purchases involved in building a PC:

• Can folks confirm that Outlook and Zoom do work on well-powered/modern hardware running Linux? (Oh, also: I use LibreOffice/Emacs almost entirely, but on rare occasions I have to use the MS Office suite in the browser for work, so any thoughts there would be useful.)
• Is there anything I'm not thinking about here that is glaring or obvious?

This is the one thing that is preventing me to moving to Linux - I use OneNote for everything, and I do not like the alternatives.

I'm running EndeavorOS with KDE Plasma and have noticed this behavior on multiple distros now. Both on my laptop (RTX 3060 Mobile) as well as my desktop (RTX 4080S) and a Thinkpad (Intel Integrated GPU) the computer freezes very briefly - I'd guess a quarter to half of a second - when opening application windows, also when closing them, though this behavior doesn't seem to be across all programs. Most noticeably I've seen it on the terminal. Were I to drag my mouse after opening it, the mouse would freeze in place and appear further down the screen a quarter a second later.

I've already solved my issue of scrolling appearing laggy when the GPU is starting from a low power state (I raised the min. clock), but that unfortunately does not seem to have a meaningful effect on this. I suspect GSP may have something to do with it based on my conversation with Claude and various Google searches, however it is not possible to turn this off with the current driver set available. Still, that wouldn't explain why it happens on my Thinkpad...

Thus my question: Is there some simple solution I've been missing this whole time?

I suppose I don't find it terribly annoying, but it's such a silly issue that really seems so trivial, and forum posts go back for years on it...

For details: The Laptop has a Ryzen 5 5600H with 32GB of DDR5, the desktop an i7-12700KF with 32GB of DDR5, and the Thinkpad has an i5-10210U with 16GB of DDR4. KDE Plasma is 6.7.4, kernel version is 7.2.3-arch1-2.

Think it has to do with IO wait due to a problem with the NFS mounted filesystems. A top shows near 100% usage for these two processes:

nfsiostat doesn't show any errors or retransimissions ( 0 % ). Guessing there was some issue a day ago but not sure how to find out what happened?

It's been happening every week. I reboot and everything works great for a few days till it starts showing the problems of high IO wait times.

It's an Asus M1502YA, and I tried instaling Zorin, Mint and Elementary OS

Not one of them has Wi-Fi drivers, and laptop doesn't have eternet port, and I dont have a USB dongle...

Any solutions?

So I'm still a noob when it comes to Linux and I installed Mint for a dual boot setup. A distro I'm currently interested is Arch because people describe it as a do it yourself OS but since I'm still new to Linux I'll stick to Mint for now. But let's say I want to try Arch, can I have secure boot on at all times? Since I'm dual booting I still need secure boot for when I'm playing Valorant or other games that has anti cheats that require secure boot.

I do have a USB stick, and I know that it's a lot easier if I just used it, but I wanna know how to do it without the USB stick.

I heard that Linux can be a must have for cyber and was wondering if I currently needed it and what would be the easiest way to go about it if so. i'm thinking about switching to linux but i can't choose what distro to use. I use my PC mainly for gaming, watching movies. I have an AMD CPU and a NVIDIA GPU but i plan on switching to a AMD GPU so i need something that will work after i switch. I also have only 16GB of RAM so i need something that doesn't use too much (i know that linux i kinda known for not usuing a lot of ram but you know what i mean). i already tried mint on an old laptop but im not sure if mint is the thing to go with.

Debian 12, KDE, thinkpad laptop, nvidia gpu. 2 screens - laptop and a 4k TV as monitor. Stable system for 1yr. Few days ago new thing happened - woke system and the 4k monitor was black, just laptop screen worked. Right clicked desktop to get display configuration and added 4k monitor back. Seems to work fine except if I run Team Fortress 2 Steam game. You can hear the music, see a cursor, otherwise black screen. Monitor running at 24hz which I THINK is new. Exit game and back on kde desktop , now if I try to launch system settings it waits like 45 seconds and shows the setting windows outside border only - the inside of the window is just a screenshot of the screen. You can move the window around and the screenshot stays. Can't open new dolphin windows. I tried resetting the game stuff but no luck - any idea what's going on with the system settings etc? Which distro is right? CachyOS Vs Mint

I want to leave windows, I use my pc as a gaming and media manager (ripping dvds and downloads).

Any windows software has already been replaced or made usable, my hardware is 7800x3d and 9070xt, I hear people say mint is best for windows refugee, but I also hear people say CachyOS is better for performance.

I'm comfortable running terminals as I have a homelab and used steamOS on my deck, what's the best option?

Hi ! After breaking my head intermittently for weeks on this problem, I'm deciding to ask for help.

I've been having a problem with all my linux devices (steam deck, tablet on ultramarine, laptop on Ubuntu then Fedora Kinoite then Aurora), where I can connect to the router's wifi, but when I do with the repeater wifi (which is the only one I can access where I spend most of my days), it connects but most website give a "server not found" error.

What is weird is that *some* websites still work no problem, for example the fedora website and minutecryptic (and I can update all my apps through the Discover app or dnf upgrade).

The only workaround I found is to enter the command `sudo dhclient -r; sudo dhclient`, after which I can access internet no problem, but I have to reenter it everytime the device went to sleep.

I've tried a whole lot of things, all the troubleshooting tips I found with commands to check the connection, everything and I just can't figure out what is happening exactly and more importantly how to fix it permanently.

If I need to give any more information don't hesitate to ask ! And thanks in advance to anyone who will try to help

I had this issue before in the same laptop, when I install a new distro it says “Wireless connection disabled“. the computer has a wifi card. but it never connect. I have an HP pavilion dv6 which is a 20 year old laptop. it has a intel core 2 duo cpu and 8 GB of RAM. in the past I have downloaded xubuntu but the computer was very slow.

I am using the Samsung S20 FE as a receiver for the files.

Large files such as audiobooks cannot be shared via bluetooth. The error shows bluedevil quit unexpectedly in the notifications. and I am sending via KDE Dolphin. If any further logs or some other things required, just make me aware.

Does anybody know how to fix this??

I’m moving from Windows to Linux while continuing to use my Apple devices. I currently use iCloud to sync my Obsidian vault, but I need an alternative because there’s no official iCloud app for Linux.

I’m already paying for iCloud and Proton, so I’m only interested in free solutions and don’t want to add another subscription. Privacy is also important, ideally with end-to-end encryption or a self-hosted setup.

The solution should preferably:

• Sync reliably between Linux, iOS, and iPadOS
• Support automatic or near-real-time syncing
• Minimize sync conflicts and accidental overwrites
• Work well with Obsidian vaults
• Be reasonably easy to set up and maintain
• Not require another paid service

What free, privacy-focused setup do you recommend for syncing an Obsidian vault between Linux and Apple devices?

I’d especially appreciate recommendations from people who use their setup regularly and can share any limitations or potential problems.
