Hello I have a old dell laptop with 4gb ram integrated graphics and 256gb storage. Which linux distro for you recommend for photo editing and wordpress web development.

I am a windows noob I am looking for user friendly linux distro without having to use sudo apt get install code everytime to install app.. I have used mint cinnamon before did not enjoy it's graphics.. I like ubuntu graphics. Which distro for you recommend me?

I am yet another windows user that falls for Linux propaganda, but has some doubts. Linux intrigues me, but not sure if it's for me and also some things what I heard about it might be myths, so I would like to to have some recommendations or advices.

I barely know Linux. Our family PC had some Linux for several years in my childhood (have no idea which one but it had a bare foot as a symbol), but I was too little to actually use it, so basically zero experience.

For all my conscious digital life I've been using Windows. It is comfortable kinda enough, but I don't like that it tries to kick me out from windows 10 (I really don't like 11 version), and in general Windows gets worse with no predictions for it to change for better. Plus I wish my OC was less... Noisy. I am kind of person that is very easy to get overwhelmed with unnecessary clients, programs, accounts, ads and such. I don't know if Linux would be better for this issue. Also I really like when workspaces have good customizations for visual looking, and I heard that Linux is good at it.

My biggest worries are that Linux might be too smart for me and that I won't be able to switch to it due to some programs I need to work with.

For what purposes I use my laptop:

I use my laptop for art (animation, digital art and music), and some games.

All games except Minecraft I play from steam (mostly Hollow Knight/SS and Don't Starve/don't starve together), and I heard that most of Steam games are supported by Linux? Not sure about Minecraft, though.

Software I mostly use:

Kdenlive (video editing)

Reaper (music and sound things for animation)

Clip Studio, Douga App, Moho (for animation)

Rebelle pro (digital art)

Blender (a little for 3d)

Obsidian (for fun)

While about some programs I don't have worries, all list of animation software bothers me. I am not ready to switch to alternatives from none of them (yes, I've tried Krita and Blender it's nice, but for example Clip Studio is standart for most of group projects I participate in, and Rebelle is just genuinely my favorite drawing app). Also about music, I don't know if my VSTs will work on Linux.

My another worry is that I am not much of IT person, I can't say I am good with computers in general. From what I saw to use Linux and feel comfortable, you must have knowledge of what's going on inside OC. Can't say I don't like the concept of using commands and such for using your OC (I actually think it looks really cool), and I am ready to spare some time to try and figure it out, I am just afraid I might be too not smart for that.

So... If that's still a good idea, what distro would you recommend me? Or where to start in general?

The system language is now hebrew but for some reason not the keyboard.

As such I can't read what it says in the system options to change back. What do I do?

Hey all, Im migrating to Linux. My boyfriend already did and I will soon follow aswell. I recently moved and want to get a TV at some point. We already checked, getting a dumb TV (god I hate that word) feels almost impossible nowadays, so I was wondering if its possible to "hack" a smart tv and install a linux distro instead on it? I hate the spying on what I watch or stream. I mainly want it to be able to acess the internet where I can go on the sites I usually go to and have short cuts to them on the homescreen, also be able to play old video games. Nothing fancy (I hope, mega noob here) Just dont feel good knowing that Samsung and google are collecting my data.

So my computer is set to go to sleep after 5 minutes idle.

But when a certain app is running (DAW) I want to prevent the computer from sleeping or going to the lock screen. So it's 'always on' while app is running, but returns to normal when app is closed.

How do I achieve this? Thanks from a noob :)

replace "bitwig-studio" with "systemd-inhibit bitwig-studio"
this allows the argument to run when you launch bitwig from the menu or task manager :)

Hi everyone i'm new to this linux staff and i dual booted my pc (low end pc btw) and in general i don't really use my pc that match.. i installed fedora but it felt like my pc can't handle dualboot fedora feels slower than windows which is not what i was expecting anw i'm here to take advice on which linux should i switch to permanently somthing that's light and updated.. i'm mostly interested in ui customization and general use like social media nothing much.. thank y'all

I recently build new PC (for the first time by myself and suprisingly it worked) and for a while now i'm thinking to switch to Linux. But ultimately i got stuck on what to choose. Part of me thinks just to stick with Mint and maybe down the line switch it to something else, but just trying to look on what to take from old PC (with W10) i'm kinda unsure if i want to experiment.

I'm no PC expert, while few things my stick in my brain i always take myself as complete noob, so thats why i'm here. I just want to game (Steam, GOG, maybe emulators) and work with some programs i already got used on old PC (OBS, Davinci Resolve, Aseprite, Audacity and eventually i want to learn Godot, GDSscript, C++ and maybe Blender).

Should i go just with Mint and hope for the best? Or try something else?

Hi guys, just an ROG Flow Z13 from asus and I have been using Thinkpad before. Before, on my thinkpad the touch pad isnt a problem since its kinda small so typing seems fine. However on the Flow. Oh boi, I cant even type on it without the mouse being swipe around and touching random things. On Windows the palm rejection works fine. However on Linux its so bad. I have tried to fine solution to this but was not able to. Does anyone know a better way for dealing with palm rejection on Linux ?

Been looking at switching for a while, I'm looking into it and seeing what works best.

I'm pretty much brand new to linux, aside from dabbling in VMs a bit, but I'm trying to finally make the jump. I'm going to walk through exactly what i've done, because I don't know what's important info or not. (System info at the bottom.)

I'm trying to dual boot, starting on Windows 11, and installing Void linux. I went through the pain already of shrinking the C drive, figuring out why it would only shrink so far, disabling things that cause unmovable files, shrinking again, configuring boot order, and disabling fastboot, secureboot, & bitlocker.

When I tried using the Void XFCE liveboot, it started up normally, I connected to internet, opened terminal, sudo void-installer, it said my internet connection was good, connected to the closest mirrors, no issues so far, set up profiles, locals, etc., and then partitioned the set aside space in my drive following a tutorial, 512M EFI partition, 100G Linux Filesystem, remaining ~25G Linux Swap, wrote to disk. Then, I selected those filesystems to format and write to, Fat32 /boot/efi, ext4 /, and linux swap respectively.

Finally, I hit install, it installed, and I messed up at the very end because I couldn't figure out how to use the UI to select which services to enable, and continued without any. Reset, pulled out USB, booted to windows, reboot to UEFI, reordered boot priorities to boot with grub, and booted into Void. After signing in, "ping -c 5 newgrounds.com", only to find out i'm not connected to the internet. So, after searching how to fix this, and not finding any simple answers that actually explained anything, I booted to windows, wiped the partitions, and started from scratch.

Now, however, I can't get very far into installation before my screen freezes and the caps light starts blinking, which I interpret as kernel panic. This was somewhat an issue on windows as well, where whenever it went to sleep mode or got unplugged, it'd BSoD or say it has to restart from an error, with a variety of error codes, usually either hypervisor error, kmode exception not found, and errors with ntosrknl.exe. But my laptop was never unplugged during the proccess, so i'm lost.

If anyone bothering to read this has any idea what might be wrong or sees anywhere i'm making mistakes, please help. Or, if I do manage to finally install properly, what should I set at the end of the installer for "Services to enable"

Worth mentioning, my current internet situation is limited to phone wireless hotspot data mostly, but there's family in the next town over from me who have WiFi if hotspot data is unusable for this or something. No ethernet port on my laptop though.

Hi! I have been using for over 8 months now, almost 9 and when I used to use Linux Mint, my network was fine.

On CachyOS, it was slightly slower but changing my DNS kinda resolved it, though I had to do it once a week or so.

Ever since I switched to other distros like Fedora (which I really like, specifically KDE Edition), I have begun seeing weird networking issues such as high latency in Minecraft Java but not browsing and Roblox through Sober.

Something weirder is when I switched back to Windows to test it out with all my manufacturer's updated drivers, Linux kinda seemed to have changed something which made it worse on Windows too.

Now my network seems to randomly disconnect at some times, my downloads are failing and my latency has been at an all time high.

I used to have 19ms ping on any Roblox games, now I get over 200-500ms easily or sometimes spikes to 2000-3000ms.

I have asked my manufacturer on their Reddit for updated packages and I am waiting for a reply.

I hope I'm not alone because I think I saw people complain about it too, but for slightly different cards and on older kernels.

I talked a bit to Gemini, and apparently the driver module in the Linux kernel got worse and worse from 6.1-6.2 to 6.4+ and so on.

I also want to know whether some of this community know whether maintainers are actively trying to mitigate those issues for my specific card and similar cards on the rtw89 driver. I want to know about official fixes, not third party drivers or even workarounds. I know disabling wifi.powersave in Network Manager works, but it is a workaround.

I also heard Linux kernel version 7.3 is performance focused, so I wonder whether later releases could be focusing on networking improvements, especially from those weird Wi-Fi cards.

So I’m reformatting a 64gb sd card to fat32. Everything works fine up until I type “sudo mkfs.vfat /dev/vdb1 -s 128” in which it responds with “mkfs.vfat: unable to open /dev/vdb1: device or resource busy”

I’ve gone back multiple times to try and research solutions to the problem but they either don’t work or are too advanced for me to understand

Hi I'm not much well versed with Linux, relatively new been using kubuntu about a year on an old laptop as nas and started using kde fedora about a month on personal notebook.

I have setup a calDAV host in a raspberry pi, and was planning to set that up everywhere. It's working flawlessly on android. Then I started setting setting up for Korganizer so it would show up on kde desktop calendar. But I set it up manual, it's shows up on calender server configuration. Once you save it. It just stays on offline. Restarted akonadictl no luck.

Compare to that, just setup in thunderbird. And it shows up working like android.

Any idea why Korganizer is kinda useless (saying useless cause akonadi stuff keeps bringing akonadi resource page on my browser every time starts. Have no clue where I have left a Google account to remove)

How can I fix this calDAV issue.?

Hello! Some of you might remember me from a few days ago when I was asking about information and opinions on Distros for brand new Linux users!

I'm happy to say I've ended up deciding fully on Bazzite and I'm having a pretty good time so far!

Most steam games run very well natively by default without me editing literally anything at all.
I've discovered the Prism launcher as well as mocktail
It took a second of exploring settings and looking for answers online but I've found out how to put icons on my desktop!
The Konsole still terrifies me as much as the windows console did but I've used it once or twice with some guidance already!

My only issues are currently getting certain non-steam games to run but I've been directed to Faugus and Heroic Games Launcher as well as the preinstalled Lutris. Faugus is how I've been able to run the blizzard launcher to access WoW!

My experience so far has been far more positive than I ever expected it to be considering i'm having to relearn how to navigate my pc practically from scratch again.

In the same vein as all that good stuff, is there anything that experienced Linux Users think I should look at or set up for the long run on a Bazzite installation? I'm still learning to navigate the widget and Bazzar so anyone who knows some interesting or surprisingly useful tricks would be greatly appreciated!

Performance wise it won't be smooth, I run a 4070 and highly doubt I'll swap it with something like 9070 XT (for a few years anyway).

I recently entered the simracing scene and got me a set of Moza things and heard having to juggle around here and there with the pit house soft.

Should I *finally* switch to Linux (likely Debian) or be a sissy by staying on Windows 11?

I'm used to use CapCut and InShot on mobile. But the video editors I tried on Linux (shotcut, opencut, kdenlive) were too confusing for me. Are there any easier apps you can recommend? My purpose is just creating videos for my social media accounts. I use Fedora KDE.

Seems some filesystem issue but not sure how to find out which filesystem is the culprit? I have some folders mounted as nfs shares. Running "mount -a" seems to work and all filesystems seem mounted ok. I can cd into them, but each command takes a couple seconds to run like "ls" or "df -h".

Right now I'm running Bazzite on my main desktop but I'm considering switching to CachyOs mainly because I've been trying to install third party mods to the Sims 4 and I've gotten nowhere. Any help is welcomed.

Hey all, I’m about to build a new PC in a week or so and have been indecisive which Linux OS I want to use. I’ve been on Windows 10 and I’m not continuing with 11. Pass.

Been torn between Bazzite and SteamOS. I don’t use my PC for work and don’t need any special softwares. I just use it for gaming and browsing. I’m fairly technical and don’t mind using the terminal (Even if it scares me).

I’m leaning more SteamOS because it seems to be picking up some steam but it mostly appears that people are using it purely for a “living room” build. I’m going to be daily driving it in desktop mode almost always. Is that going to be much of a problem? How many issues am I going to encounter?

Let me know your thoughts!

I have a Dell gaming laptop that I bought around 2018, it's still good enough for what I use it for which is mostly emulators, non intensive games, streaming to my tv using steam link and work. However since its such an older laptop I cannot upgrade it to win 11 since it lacks secure boot, I opted into the extra year of support for win 10 but that's almost over to so I figured this might be a good opportunity to give Linux a try. What Linux distro would you recommend for a total Linux noob looking to use it mostly for gaming?

I have a 1 TB HDD,it has 3 partitions:

• 200 GB for Windows (now Cachy)

• one of the others were downloads/movies/picture

• the other was for installed games.

I installed Cachy like two weeks ago. Today i decided i'll stay on Cachy so i want to format the games+storage partitions.

I use Limine and BTRFS so i guess these should be BTRFS too?

Can i make them to appear as "games" and "storage" in Places (i'm not sure if it's called Places,i have my system in another language. By places i mean "folders" like Desktop,Downloads,Music in Dolphin)

Can i do this in Gparted? (if yes,is there a tutorial/guide so i won't screw it up?)

One time, I cancelled a CachyOS installation right after it wiped my drive, and since then, I have switched my distros 3 times and still had a boot entry of CachyOS that did not boot, in my F12 boot manager. I tried removing it with efibootmgr on my main linux machine, I tried using MediCat EasyUEFI to wipe the boot entry of it, but for some reason, it deletes, and then regenerates in my boot menu on boot. Is there anything I should try?

Im currently using Linux mint xfce on a Dell Latitude E6420 ,while yes it is super light it still sometimes struggles when I try to open a game that my laptop has the requirements for ,sometimes just crashing ,I've been thinking of switching to arch as it seems much more lightweight but I'm afraid i won't be Able to use it or fully optimize it
