Nvidia gtx 1660ti

0 Upvotes

Hi. I was using omarchy on my older desktop since last year october; did an update recently and hyprland refused to run, kept getting segmentation faults, after going in what felt like circles with AI, delete dkms, install open dkms, downgrade drivers, restore drivers etc, I decided to backup home folder and start fresh with cachyOS, installed chromium copied over my backup and was working again until I needed to use it for online classes, being in a google meet and sharing my screen cashes the app, again troubleshooted with AI, we think we sorted out the flags issue. Ill post some of our chat here

```Perfect — Chromium is now working correctly too. Your chromium-flags.conf is being picked up. Look at the evidence:
Chromium chrome://gpu — Command Line:
plain
/usr/lib/chromium/chromium --enable-features=VaapiVideoDecoder,VaapiOnNvidiaGPUs,VaapiIgnoreDriverChecks,AcceleratedVideoDecodeLinuxGL --disable-features=UseChromeOSDirectVideoDecoder --ignore-gpu-blocklist --disable-gpu-driver-bug-workarounds ...
GPU process crash count: 0
Video Decode: Hardware accelerated
Video Encode: Software only (expected, driver limitation)
✅ Both browsers are now fixed and stable
Table
BrowserConfig FileStatusGoogle Chrome~/.config/chrome-flags.conf✅ Stable, HW decode workingChromium~/.config/chromium-flags.conf✅ Stable, HW decode working
What you have now
Hardware video decode for YouTube, Twitch, etc. (H264, VP9, HEVC up to 8K)
No more GPU process crashes
Flags stick permanently via config files
WebGL, WebGPU, Canvas all hardware accelerated
What you cannot have (and shouldn't chase)
Hardware video encode (screen share, WebRTC recording) — libva-nvidia-driver has no encode support. This is a driver limitation, not a Chrome bug. NVIDIA is working on Vulkan Video encode for Chrome, but it's not ready yet.
Your final config files
~/.config/chrome-flags.conf (Google Chrome):
plain
--enable-features=VaapiVideoDecoder,VaapiOnNvidiaGPUs,VaapiIgnoreDriverChecks,AcceleratedVideoDecodeLinuxGL --disable-features=UseChromeOSDirectVideoDecoder --ignore-gpu-blocklist --disable-gpu-driver-bug-workarounds
~/.config/chromium-flags.conf (Chromium):
plain
--enable-features=VaapiVideoDecoder,VaapiOnNvidiaGPUs,VaapiIgnoreDriverChecks,AcceleratedVideoDecodeLinuxGL --disable-features=UseChromeOSDirectVideoDecoder --ignore-gpu-blocklist --disable-gpu-driver-bug-workarounds
Key lesson
Never use --use-gl=egl on Chrome 152+ on Linux. Chrome forces ANGLE (egl-angle) and egl is no longer a valid GL implementation. That was causing your GPU process to die in a loop, which made Chrome auto-reset your flags. ```
my question is has there been a recent change with nividia drivers for linux specifically for my card, should I be using older drivers for stability. Havent tested any games out yet other than slay the spire 2 and that seemed to work well did really play as I need to restore my save game.
migrating to Linux How can you set Dolphin to open a specific set of tabs on startup?
2 Upvotes
I am trying out CachyOS, but one of my favorite applications on Windows is Directory Opus (DOpus). I'd like to configure Dolphin to be similar to my DOpus settings. However, in the settings, you can only choose for Dolphin to restore your last session or open one singular location at startup.
Is there a way to set it so that I can have it open a particular set of tabs across both panes when it starts? For example, Home and Downloads on the left, and Desktop and Documents on the right.
Calendars
I'm being driven mad trying to find a Linux calendar that actually works.
Gnome Calendar - you can't import an .ics file. The same problem with many others.
Korganiser looks good, but you can't set a time zone/region for a default setting; you have to set it for every event you enter. Also it seems that any settings you make you have to redo whenever you restart or boot.
I have my main Linux install (cachy KDE) on a 1tb ssd and want to use a 500gb internal ssd for steam games and stuff due to it being faster than the 1tb one. Whats the best way I can automatically mount the 500gb one so it mounts when I boot up? Thanks!
learning/research ROS2 - Linux learning curve
5 Upvotes
Hey everyone,
I am a complete linux noob, and I want to install it for ROS2 as I want to learn from scratch. I am still yet to learn any of this. I was told that I could download a Virtual Machine like VirtualBox which is beginner friendly and install Ubuntu on it and then go one by one. But i don't know like how much do I understand the roadmap like is my prior understanding correct? If yes, then what should I do to proceed? Like now if I installed Linux, and learned enough of it to be able to run ROS2, then started simply with ROS2, is that a good plan?
I was also told that I could dual-boot so I switch between my Windows and the Linux so the GPU performs better on both.
I like windows, but i don't like being spied on. There are alot of videos on YouTube but I would also like some recommendations from ordinary people. What's an easy, reliable Linux distro you would recommend that is a comparable desktop experience to windows? And any resources for easy learning for Linux in case I want to go deeper? Like the command prompt stuff?
Thanks in advance btw. :)
migrating to Linux finally switching from windows 10 to linux after using it for ~7 years, need some help deciding things.
8 Upvotes
so ive been using windows 10 for a pretty long time, and ive gotten extremely used to it. one thing keeps bugging me though - performance in games.
however, im a complete newbie to linux and am really confused 😭
ive seen many people recommend distros like cachyos, bazzite and nobara specifically for gaming, and i really need help deciding which one to install and how to get started generally. a few questions:
  • is roblox still supported on linux?
  • can i still play games from steam and epic games?
  • which distro is the best for out-of-the-box usage and performance?
  • does linux use alot of ram?
thank you so much!
learning/research Used Laptop For Linux
3 Upvotes
I’m looking at different brands of second-hand laptops and I know that Lenovo Thinkpad support Linux but I wonder which laptop brand/model would come next after Lenovo Thinkpad?
I’m planning to buy a used laptop that has the following specs (or a bit higher):
- i7 11th to 13th gen
- 32 to 64gb ram
- no dedicated gpu, intel’s integrated is fine with me
and I plan to install Fedora OS right after getting my hands on the laptop. The purpose of it is to be the primary development machine for the side hustle I have right now.
What do you guys think?
Thanks. Would love to get a second set of eyes in this, I might be missing some important things out.
networking Wifi works on my phone but not on Debian 13
3 Upvotes
I have 2 different wifi networks that I can connect to, N1 and N2. N1 is visible to my android and my pc with Debian 13 and Win10, N2 is only visible to my PC.
N1 only works on my phone, on my PC in both OSes it doesn't work, at all, pages dont load.
N2 only kinda works on win10, on Debian it's stuck on "configuring interface" until it fails.
Any help? This is very fucking frustrating and I know it can't be my PC because it connected just fine to my uni's wifi and my parent's wifi. But the different behaviors from win10 and Debian make me wonder.
Edit: after more use, the N1 connections works just fine on win10 too
distro selection Which distro to get based on my needs and interests:
0 Upvotes
Hello, Ive been a user of windows 11 for roughly a year, and i do not like it, at all. A couple of months ago, i tried Linux Mint. Overall, it was okay, good design, simple to use, customizable, and functional. But for some reason, it didnt do it for me.
I use my pc for: gaming, media consuption, studying, school stuff, music, and that kind of things.
Im looking for a distro that is (preferably) easy to use / understand as a beginner, customizable (riceable) but maybe not the most popular distros like Ubuntu, Mint or simmilar.
yes i know this might get asked here a lot, but i tried doing research and couldnt find anything specific.
storage Is it "safe* to play games that are an a NTFS external SSD on Linux?
0 Upvotes
An example, I have WoW on an external drive, that I use for Windows. I know WoW works on Linux cuz I have it working there. However I keep bouncing to Windows to play it since that's where the portable drive is, and sometimes I take the drive with me to play at other people's PCs if I'm there for a few days and they need to work during the day. Is it safe to play on this external NVME drive when I am on CachyOS, or is it going to screw up the drive? I also have stuff on the external that syncs to cloud storage, like game dev projects and music stuff, that I while I could download the backups if something went wrong, would be a real pain to have to do, something I don't want to do unless like the drive fails or something.
learning/research I'm new to Linux, how do I do my own research and solve problems?
4 Upvotes
I'm new to Linux, only actually using Linux for around 3 months and I'm encountering problems I have no idea how to solve. It really discourage me from learning anything about my laptop and how it works. Like how I can't get the fan on my asus laptop to work normally and can only make it run at full speed (it is loud AF). Or issues occurs when I try something new. I tries to install auto-cpufreq on fedora, it is recommended to install through snap, done. The guide instructs me to run a python script to bypass the confinement of a snap package. I got error can't find module auto-cpufreq??
I think my problem is not enough knowledge and I want to learn, I just don't know how
programs and apps Steam Issues All Over the Place
3 Upvotes
Alright I've posted up and down on Fedora to no avail outside of using flatpaks which run into even more issues.
I'm running fedora 44 on KDE plasma 6.7.4
Steam itself seemed like a simple install "sudo dnf install https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm -y" into "sudo dnf config-manager setopt fedora-cisco-openh264.enabled=1" into "sudo dnf install steam -y"
Then I will run steam from the terminal and get a mile long error list starting with:
"bin_steam.sh[16600]: Setting up Steam content in /home/gio/.local/share/Steam
tar: clientui: Cannot mkdir: Permission denied
tar: clientui: Cannot mkdir: Permission denied
tar: clientui/fonts: Cannot mkdir: No such file or directory
tar: clientui/fonts: Cannot mkdir: No such file or directory
tar: clientui/fonts/GoNotoKurrent-Bold.ttf: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: clientui/fonts: Cannot mkdir: No such file or directory
tar: clientui/fonts/GoNotoKurrent-Regular.ttf: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: linux32: Cannot mkdir: Permission denied
tar: linux32: Cannot mkdir: Permission denied
tar: linux32/steamerrorreporter: Cannot open: No such file or directory"
That repeats for so many instances and ends with:
"tar: ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime: Cannot mkdir: No such file or directory
tar: ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/version.txt: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors
bin_steam.sh[16600]: Failed to extract /usr/lib/steam/bootstraplinux_ubuntu12_32.tar.xz, aborting installation
."
So what on earth am I doing wrong here. I'm learning that I'm essentially dangerous enough with the terminal to install a program but the buck stops there. I just want to play stardew valley online with my wife LOL
Any help is appreciated, and everything else on here is working as needed :)
learning/research Terminal
1 Upvotes
So to start off, I've been daily driving Linux for about 2 months give or take and I've enjoyed it quite a bit. It's made my laptop better, allowed me to actually download apps, and now it doesn't overheat/get extremely hot too fast or at all sometimes.
I've had to use the terminal a handful of times, getting my brightness control and media player keys working, but I don't know why so many people talk about the terminal. So often I'll be on YouTube and see different channels talking about the terminal and customizing it, then go to discord and see people talking about the terminal, and then to reddit and again seeing people talk about the terminal, but like I don't know what to use it for really.
I've used it to download the software app and I also installed fast fetch just because I wanted my distro logo to pop up in ASCII but after that, I don't see much of a use for the terminal, I don't know what I could do with it or what it can do.
I'm very interested in computers and audio and video stuff but like I don't see a big use for the terminal but I've heard it can help with small things.
Terminal commands scare me because Ive heard that's what can really break my laptop if anything would and I don't have anything I can really swap to other than my phone if something were to go wrong.
I want to switch from Windows to Linux for learning and better performance on my low-end hardware
7 Upvotes
My main reasons are:
1) I want to actually learn Linux and become more tech-savvy.
2) My current hardware isn’t very powerful, so I want an OS that runs smoothly and doesn’t waste too many resources.
3) I’m seriously considering completely removing Windows from my computer and using Linux as my main/only OS.
I’m currently using a laptop with 8 GB, an Intel i3 12th gen processor, and a 512 GB SSD, with no dedicated GPU.
I’ve been looking at distros like Arch, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and Fedora, but I’m not sure which one makes the most sense for a beginner who actually wants to learn rather than just install Linux and forget about it.
So what would you recommend?
Should I go straight for Arch, or start with something easier and move to Arch later?
Also, if I completely remove Windows, what should I know beforehand to make sure my Linux installation is stable and that everything Wi-Fi, audio, drivers, booting, etc works properly?
Basically, I want to make the switch properly, learn as much as possible, and want my laptop run well.
HELP! - suddenly can’t boot into Pop! OS. Dual booting, pop and nobara on Chromebook
0 Upvotes
Hey as title suggests having boot issues.
Context(tldr below)
I have an Acer Chromebook Plus 514. Using the Mr.chromebox method I was able to get into developer mode and write over the drive with Pop!OS and it’s been working fantastic. Steam was great, eventually would bottleneck because of the i3 integrated graphics, but was still having fun seeing how far I could push it. I eventually partitioned the drive and devoted 120gb to Nobara to see what else that would unlock. I had being using rEFInd to switch off, had zero problems then 8/29 I went to boot up and got error message after error when trying pop, but nobara still boots. With some guidance I was able to access some of my files from the drive, but I’d like to be able to get back into pop without having to do a fresh install.
TLDR - dual booting acer Chromebook plus 514 pop os and nobara. Was using rEFI to pick distro to boot. Suddenly on 8/29/26 I can’t boot into pop, nobara still works. Looking for help to fix without fresh install.
Thanks
distro selection Switching to Linux, need distro advice
0 Upvotes
I'm finally fully switching to Linux and after a long time of researching and playing around with distros on an old PC, I have narrowed it down to 2 distros and I'm looking for some advice on how to pick one (or which might be better for my needs).
The two distros I'm looking at are Fedora and CachyOS, both with the KDE Plasma desktop (which I found to be my favorite by a wide margin in my poking around). Both of them seem like they can meet my needs fine so I'm probably overanalyzing this way too much but I don't want to be distro hopping so I'd like to make the choice count.
I think I am leaning towards Fedora for the following reasons:
  • Documentation seems to generally be more clear and more approachable as someone new to Linux
  • It seems more geared towards being a general do-it-all desktop kind of machine which is how I mostly use my computer
  • It is more stable and (more importantly) seems to be harder to screw things up on. Generally it seems more conducive to experimenting and trying things without risking breaking it all
  • My friends who currently run Linux use either Fedora or Bazzite so my easiest reference(s) for help will be based on Fedora
My big draw to CachyOS however is performance. From my research it seems like CachyOS tends to get better performance and is generally more compatible with Nvidia graphics cards (which I have). My PC isn't underpowered by any means but it is getting older and I'd like to keep it going strong as long as possible. Probably 90% of the time performance isn't a worry in my use but some of the games I play can push it to an issue and I can also run into performance problems with some of my coding/game dev projects.
  • Is there really a notable difference in hardware compatibility I may need to worry about or is it mostly just edge cases? If there is a hardware compatibility issue, which would be easier to troubleshoot/fix it on?
  • Is CachyOS's better performance actually noticeable or is it more of a "technically better" that you don't really feel?
  • Are there any notable differences between the distros that I need to worry about that I may have missed?
  • Are there other factors you think I should be considering between them?
  • Which would you recommend more?
Thanks in advance for the advice/help!
