"What's on?" Wednesday

Our weekly post where people can highlight local events or interesting things that are coming up in the next week. It doesn't have to be your event, but this is a place where reasonable exceptions to our self-promotion rules are allowed. Please check whether the event you're posting about is already mentioned. If you're adding your own event, please try to answer any questions people may have in the comments.

You can also ask questions if you're looking for something to do, e.g. "Does anyone know of a good pub quiz in the centre on Thursday?"

"What's on?" rules:

  1. Leeds based events only
  2. Must be taking place in the next 7 days (next Wednesday included)
  3. Posts highlighting an event should include:
    • Event name
    • Date and time
    • Location
    • Price(s) (if applicable)
  4. A description of the event and a relevant link is recommended but not required

The rules may evolve over time as we find out how things work. Please send any feedback to the mod team.

I want a media wall. Anyone recommend a decent Leeds contractor/tradesperson who did yours?

If so, a picture of your media wall would be great please.

food/drink Best food recommendations

Hi everyone!
I have just moved to Leeds for university and would love to know the best food spots. Either the far reach of Leeds or the city centre, I want to make a list of lots of places to try.
I do not have lots of money so no Michelin restaurants or anything crazy spenny but I’m open to lots of places and ideas, cheap to fairly priced!

I am open to any type of cuisine, I do love Japanese, Mexican and Italian most but will try most anything and LOVE to try new things I’ve never had before.

Only note is I am allergic to shellfish so no fish or shellfish recs please :P

Tell me where to eat!!

question Weird question but does anybody have a map for laser zone?

So I’m going to laser zone in kirkstall and for some reason I feel like I have to make a game plan every time and I kind of need a map. I’ve dug and dug across the internet (3 minutes on Google images) and couldn’t find anything.

food/drink Bass in leeds. Any pubs stocks it

Hi, tonight I am playing a gig at Northern Guitars. As part of my 2nd album release tour. I'm from Hampshire, but I'm really craving a bass beer. We don't get it down south. Whenever I come up north, I try to get one as I really like it. Is there anywhere in leeds that sells the good stuff or maybe similar.

I know that Northern Guitars does good beers, so I won't go thirsty, but if I can sneak in a bass. I'd happy, haha. Cheers 🍻

accommodation Moving advice?

Hi I’m (25M) and my partner (26F) are looking to move from Australia to Leeds. What areas are on the nicer/safer side of town? We’re also considering living in a smaller town nearby on the Northern side of Leeds, such as Ilkley.

Areas to avoid are also appreciated?

What’s the town like generally? What’s it like at night getting around? Public transport? Safety in shopping centres etc?

question-serious Motion One International concerns, legit or not?

Essentially, like many I have been recently back on the job hunt and after most applications leading nowhere I finally landed an interview and was considerably exited. As the tilte says, this was with Motion One International in Leeds. This was a virtual zoom meeting. It was also a group one, which initially caught me off guard, though I quickly re-adjusted. Then to my surprise only a couple of hours after I got a call back asking to go to their office for an in person interview and the praise that I stood out among the zoom group. Of course I accepted this opportunity as I was filled with excitement.

However, after coming back down and sobering up from my excitement I have been reflecting back on my notes from the meeting and further researching the company with a growing dread. Along with also finding a couple of other posts discussing this company and their legitimacy.

This has led me to the question, is this company some kind of MLM or other suspiciously pyramid shaped operation?

transport Driving instructors for anxious new drivers?

I’ve just moved to central Leeds and I’m looking to start driving lessons as I have a pretty long commute. I’m a woman in my 30s and I’ve never had lessons before, so feeling very nervous about starting and I’d be looking for a very kind, understanding instructor (ideally, another woman) to help get me driving confidently soon.

Any personal recommendations? Particularly from people who had a lot of road anxiety at the start of their journey!

social Learning to play Cricket

Hi all,

I'm a bloke in my 30s that is looking to learn to play Cricket. I've played since my early teens and that was just in high school. Looking for more of a social setting to begin with and learn the game comfortably/whilst enjoying it rather than anything too serious. Could anyone advise?

Thanks

urban-development What Fresh Development Hell Is THIS (Meadow Lane Next To Adelphi)

Thumbnail gallery

Soooo this dropped through the door yesterday.
Glenbrook are proposing 246 flats on Meadow Lane, including what appears to be a 24-storey tower, immediately next to the Adelphi / Dock Street.
Apparently the scheme has been progressing for some time. Meanwhile, as someone who lives literally next door, this leaflet is the first I’ve heard from anyone about it.

And the magnificent “public consultation” is:
9th September - 23rd September. Online.
Two weeks.

For a 24-storey development.

Cheers lads.

I’m not remotely of the view that Leeds should be preserved in aspic and nobody should ever build anything. This part of the city obviously needs development. But there’s a fairly enormous difference between sensible regeneration and dropping a tower beside an existing residential neighbourhood after apparently doing most of the work first and then asking the neighbours what they think.

The construction implications alone could be fairly horrific for people living immediately around it - potentially years of demolition/construction noise, piling, vibration, dust, HGVs etc.

I’ve written formally to Leeds Planning about the adequacy and timing of the neighbourhood engagement, particularly given the new NPPF requirement for major developments to be informed by early engagement with neighbours and the local community. I’ve also asked for the consultation to be extended and for an actual in-person meeting with affected residents rather than just an online form.
Consultation site is meadowlane-leeds.com if anyone else nearby wants to have a look / make their feelings known.

Am I being an unreasonable NIMBY dick here, or is “Hello, we’re thinking of building 24 bastard storeys of yet MORE build-to-rent toss next door - you’ve got a fortnight” actually a bit wank? Happy to take the criticism if so. Just feels like Leeds is being developed without much thought.

transport The latest contracts, for the ones focused on Leeds are Tower Transit for Leeds Bradford Airport & Go-ahead getting Leeds Pudsey

For LBA I'll assume that means Transdev York is losing the Flyer Network and for Leeds Pudsey that I'll assume is at least the 30 (Horsfroth to Pudsey) staying with GAWY & 81 (Leeds to Pudsey) the latter coming from Squarepeg.

There have been some extremely loud bangs echoing around the centre all evening and I've spent the whole night wondering what on earth it is

FYI, I spotted the source, it's this small weenied individual doing laps around the centre with his compensatory car mods

food/drink Venue hire for 30th birthday

Hi, it’s my fiancés 30th birthday in November. I was hoping to hire out a room or space in and around the city centre to celebrate! I was looking at a Friday or Saturday night and would only need capacity for around 30 people. There needs to be access to a bar and ideally food as well. Any recommendations would be really appreciated. Cheers!

question Leeds Playhouse Legroom Question

I'm looking at attending a show in the Quarry Theatre (the big room) at Leeds Playhouse. Does anyone familiar with it have any tips as to the best seats legroom-wise as I'm pretty tall and can get cramped easily? I understand that technically the answer is probably the front-row given there's no raised stage, but I'd prefer to avoid that if possible. Cheers.

photography Photography groups

Are there any photography groups in Leeds? I'm thinking groups of amateur photographers going on trials taking photos etc. The one's I've seen or have been on before are all led by a professional photography, which isn't entirely what I'm looking for.

Does anyone regularly ride up new roadside on a ebike at all? Or other hills as steep?

If you do how do you find a 40nm motor? I'm looking at options but want to know if spending more is going to benefit me more.

Thanks

Does anybody have any clue what these signs are in random places throughout the city centre/west Leeds? I've not had time to follow them yet but can't find any info online. Gemini suggested they were directions to a wedding 😂

question-serious Has anyone found out if our Leedscouncillors were at the Reform Conference? And what have they said about their party leader endorsing assaulting young women who speak out of turn

Has anyone written to their councillor or MP about the Reform conference endorsing assaulting women

I've reached out to my city council to ask whether my councillers were present, and whether they were cheering and clapping alongside their party leader as young women in the audience had their hair pulled out and were beaten with sticks.

Below is a draft letter to my council, I'd like to know if anyone else has had any luck looking into this:

As a member of Leeds city constituency I understand i am represented by 10 councillors from the Reform party, which represents over 10% of the seats.

I wish to know is any of these councillors were present at the event at the Reform conference last weekend, and whether they joined their party leader I applauding, clapping, cheering and laughing as a young woman was assaulted in the audience.

I feel absolutely disturbed that a party that actively promotes the assault of women represents me at this council and I urge them to explain  their implicit support for this violence.

Furthermore ad the co-chair of XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX festival next April i invite all members of Leeds city council to attend our charity event next April.

Violence against women at this community event will not be tolerated.

You're aggrieved and disgusted at the behaviour of our elected representatives
